My Dad taught me to fish 53 years ago and he loved Eels most of all,I still fish,but mainly for Carp,but I really enjoy your videos you have a nice gentle way of presenting which is quite a contrast to some of the brash Carp fishing videos.

Phil my fishing club is barbed and mirco bared hooks will the tig rig be OK to use my be a shorter distance between the hook and float stop?
Hello Michael,
It might be worth asking the club if they make an exception to the rule. I completely agree with a micro barbed rule, and it would always be my preference given the choice for most other species.
But eel fishing is very different, I confident you will lip hook 99% of the eels using the twig rig, using a barbless hook makes it so much easier to unhook them especially as they are so lively!

What were the alarms you used please?
They are Broadland drop off alarms. Made by Colin Pitlen, a Norfolk keen pike angler ( a very good rod builder too).

I am on a syndicate with big eels and want to fish the twig however can't use wire. What line would you recommend for a hook link
Hello Matt,
A strong coated braid works well. Only strip back enough coating to tie a knotless knot. The key is to use the twig to lip hook the eels, that way their teeth aren't near the hook length 👌

New to fishing for eel, caught one the other week, I was woundering if circle hooks works well for eel or not.
I've not tried circle hooks. But I am a fan of the Korda Krank barbless hooks for eel fishing. That provide a very secure hook hold but are easy to remove 👌

Is it true when you try to bait for predators some are more smarter than others?
Probably true for lots of different species, not just predators?

Well spotted 😉, There's a story behind the single handles. I prefer single handles the 6000 size X-Aeros come with doubles. A friend purchased the 8000 size X-Aeros's that come with single handles.
He prefers double handles, so we did a swap! 👌

Oh yes! Being an all round angler I class a BIG eel as the hardest challenge. The fact a 5lb eel could be 50 years old and possibly has never been caught before adds to the attraction.
Check out the national Anguilla club, most member only fish for eels.
