- Just how slippery is an eel? Segment host Al Spoler meets waterman Troy Wilkens from Kent Narrows, MD. Troy fishes for eels, a delicacy unfamiliar to most Marylanders. Al learns how to bait and catch eels, then visits The Salt Line restaurant in Washington, DC where chef Kyle Bailey serves up grilled eel.
We used to catch eels in New Jersey, as big around as your wrist and about 30 inches long, night fishing for catfish and snapping turtles. There used to be eel weirs(large traps) up and down the Delaware river but can be found in most of the eastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico, in both salt water and fresh water to the smallest tributaries. They cook and eat just like any other fish with nice flaky white meat, but they are amazing when smoked.
When I was in NJ on a commercial vessel last year they didn't want us to keep em. I know they are considered a "trash fish" but if you smoke the shit out of em, they are delicious.
We caught do many of these in Toddville md. The back creeks are full of huge eels. They love the small bridges and love hotdogs and shrimp and small minnows and crab .
I've caught a few freshwater eels in the Potomac they are delicious

Troy ; just out of curiosity ? I'm from UK and study accents . Is your accent a " typical ' Maryland accent . It's very pleasant to listen to. To my ears there is a slight Southern tinge but I may be wrong ?! Thanks !
That is a Chesapeake/Baltimore accent. Not all Marylanders have this accent but it is definitely distinct.
Maryland has several accents; Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore accents are a blend of Devonshire, Somerset, and Cornish accents.

Almost anything. If you use a piece of bait fish you can get one every cast. There a big pain in the ass, their everywhere.

How come eels never caught on as an American food? I caught a few big ones out of the Savannah River and tried to make it jellied like they do in London. It became cat food after first bite
