So wierd, I was just talking to my local tackle dealer a week or so ago and he was telling me he used to go eel fishing in one of my local lakes years ago! He said , if caught, a large eel was the best fighting fish he had ever fished for. Great to see a new a more unusual fish Species fished on here.
Too right they are. They scrap like mad and are experts at knotting themselves in snags. I thought I had a monster Perch bending my rob double on lobworm in a canal, it was an ell of less than 1lb.
Was dead baiting for pike at my local highland loch, with a whole mackerel 7 inches, the ele took it no bother, and was a monster at 7lb 2 oz what a great fight too!! A very underrated species, but great fun eye must say!!
Best fishing video I've watched for a long time, would be awesome if you could do a video on your rigs. Thanks again for the refreshing watch! Tight lines 🐍🎣💪👍
A fascinating species. The mystery that surrounds them is part of their appeal. With the increased growth of most freshwater species due to warmer winters, eutrophication and the amount of high protein baits going into many waters, one would expect eels to have grown much bigger as well. There must be some big eels living happily unnoticed in some of those commercial waters that are vastly overstocked with small fish. That 11lb eel caught by a teenager in the 1970s must be the UK's longest standing record (other than the 64 lb salmon and maybe the burbot)! I am not sure how true it is, but I have read that big eels are never caught more than once, either because they learn to avoid angler's rigs or because they often die after capture. Is there any evidence of known repeat captures of big eels?
I was fishing a lake for carp simple hair rig with a boilie. The lake I was in I never knew there was eels in there my dad was speaking to some lad and he said there was 2 or 3 eels in the lake. An hour later alarms going off and its fighting hard so I’m thinking it’s a big carp. Next minute head comes up and it’s an eel. Made me laugh
I just learned earlier this evening that eels frequent a local fishing spot that's close to me and has a few species that feed well during the night. If it weren't for the pandemic I would probably never have known about it.
Great video. Just found a venue near me and caught some by accident while waggler fishing for silvers, but they were a good stamp, 3 out of 5 being 2ft long weighing over 1lb each. Definitely will try to see if there are any bigger ones in there using these tips
I am really ashamed, as when i was growing up on the banks of a Salmon and Sea Trout river we treated eels as basically vermin. I can remember days when I could scoop endless handfuls of elvers as they ascended the weir. I didn't know they had become endangered until a few years ago when I took my son to show him the elver run, It wasn't there - not a single one. Very very disheartening.
Im sure I'm not alone in loving and loathing eels in equal measures! I love them because of their incredible life cycle, and their evolutionary adaptations that, a wee bit like pike, their very little changed in millions of years as they haven't needed to. On the flip side, i hate them because, well, their eels! lol I am tempted to try and target the specimens though, as even little one fight like buggery on a light feeder rod! I only took up fishing again 4 years ago, (i fished from 8-17, i gave up when i discovered women and dope ;-)) i started on my local stretch of the trent, when i was asking for tips in the summer months, i was warned against using maggot or worm after dark....soon discovered why! 😁 thats when they come out to play!!
Many moons ago i was fed up putting back small sea fish that had been deep hooked and the outcome was usually the same so i started using as the chap in video calls it a t-bar rig and never had a deep hooked fish again.
@@jameslloyd8728 James what i used was an inner empty ballpoint pen tube seemed to work great for me, i think it really does not matter what you use as long there is bait on the hook plus sea fish aren't really hook/rig shy, well thats my thinking anyway. Cheers.
Hi Green fingers, eels definitely prefer the warmer months. Your best chances would be between April and September. Although they will feed on mild winter days.
Aren't they a protected species now? Also they were dying out due to a sort of parasite that was deadly to them I used to catch loads around the Thames but not any for years
Dude ... its 400 tonnes ... 🙄😂 But I agree with your point about lough Neagh being raped... 500 tonnes of coarse fish are also taken annually... 😒 Try some of your smaller local streams... or fish the Erne system...& of course yer always welcome down south to fish the river Shannon on which I personally have seen MONSTER eels... 😱 😎👍☘🍺
I find it hard to believe that a rare fish like the pollan is allowed to commercially fished for on Lough Neagh. All the rare whitefish species (like vendace and powan) are in decline in the UK. I have asked the question on commercial pollan fishing videos on here, but have not had a reply. I suppose I need to write to the Government or the Environment Agency in Northern Ireland to see how they justify it.
Done it all mate but now the Scottish government has banned eel fishing as they’re a protection order in place , if I go back for them it will be in brackish waters that are near my house and also holds flounders cod etc cheers
As an all round angler, its lovely to see something different other than carp trench bream and pike. If it's got fins, I will fish for it!
Awwww, you fish for whales and dolphins,. even Pinnipeds. Thats nasty
This dude knows . Impressive. Well thought out set up. Ingenious.

As others have said, fantastic and selfless idea with the anti-deep hooking rig. Great stuff mate!
Thanks 👍
I like the shrink tube idea. Good vid as always.
great video nice to see some different target species
Really enjoyed this lads
Personal best 3.75 caught in broad daylight.Love the T Bar to protect our anguilla friends.
Well done, hopefully Phil's T bar rig helps a few big eels get returned unharmed.
What a great vid thanks for posting I love eel fishing , never caught a large one but will be trying now
Thank you Darren, glad you enjoyed the video.
Had 2 specimens on fish meal boilies in bight sunshine -great fight
Please more eelfishing videos.👍👍🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed the video Stivi, hopefully we can persuade Phil to target eels on camera again soon.

Check out Llangors lake in south Wales, regularly does 6, 7 lb ers

That fella knows his stuff. Only 2 mins in and a good watch. Looking forward to trying to beat my 4lb 2oz pb soon as I can
Also do you have any photo of the retention tube that was used?
Glad you enjoyed the video Ryan and good luck on beating your pb.

When would you start trying to catch eels in the uk ?
Hi Green fingers, eels definitely prefer the warmer months. Your best chances would be between April and September. Although they will feed on mild winter days.
Waters generally hold large mouth fish eating eels, or small mouthed worm eaters. No point dead-baiting of they're small mouthed. Both types grow big.
Really really nice to see a specialist in action - what an angler! Didn't like the host tho, but well, ok.
Aren't they a protected species now? Also they were dying out due to a sort of parasite that was deadly to them
I used to catch loads around the Thames but not any for years
Anyone know what lake this is ?
Eels are one of the best fish in british waters. I love them
100% agreed
@@mason_angling1631 well done on your big eel last year. Keep up the good work.
@@AnglingDirectTV thanks appreciate it!! I want a bigger one this year 😉🎣 I think we’ll be due another eel fishing video soon 😊😊🎣🎣🎣
How do you avoid perch biting on the worms?
Phil tells us that the perch are much less active after dark. So fishing after dark would be your best bet for avoiding the perch.
Caught my first eel a 6lber! by accident fishing for catfish on spam, pva bag dead maggots, casters, and tuna boilie crumb 😀
I thought eels were very rare these days. I used to catch loads of bootlace eels on the Medway but not had one for years
Anyone know what size is the hook please ??
Hi woody, Phil was using a size 6 barbless hook.
I would love to target them if not for the deep-hooking issue... I'll try the Tee-bar solution ... thanks for the tip ... nice catch lads !!
😎👍☘🍺
Another tip use ton up braid for hook lengths not wire
Did you not hear him talking about NOT using braid ? 🙄

Eels are something best to eat
Do eels have teeth?
Yes eels have small teeth but as they get bigger they can have bigger teeth 👍
Hi Joe, they certainly do. Not as savage as a pike or a Zander but capable of biting through mono and some braided lines, hence Phil uses a soft wire.
Beginner carp Carp fishing guide series?
Scroll through the videos on their channel. There's more than enough carp videos 👍
over 400million tons of eel exported from lough neagh(UK) every year, my chances of ever seeing a big eel are slim

I’d say Lough Neagh’s eel population is all but extinct now with this blue green algae, same with the pollan…
That lake looks familiar
Lenwade bridge ?

You will never have a deeply hooked eel if you use circle hooks !
I swear by circle-hooks 👌🏻
If u cover the eels eyes and stroke their back they will act dead until they get near water
You mean put them on their back and stroke the belly.. That calms them. 👍

bloody tasty things dey are....ooooo aarr. i usually fish with old mackareal heads and dead mice for bait. Mon da eels,
