- Have you ever wondered what caused Sidney's memory loss? Well, so have the other Diesels. Now, it's time that question was answered...before it too, is forgotten.
Hey everyone, this is a silly idea I've had for YEARS in the back of my mind. I'm glad to finally make it a reality. Thanks to the whole cast for helping me make this goofy idea come to life! More content is coming soon as well as S5 still in the works! Hope you all enjoy!

I know that it’s just a throwaway joke, but the idea of diesel bumping engines so hard he basically lobotomises them is just inherently comical, but also kinda sad.
In real life, too much exposure to smoke leads to *chronic neuroinflammation* and compromises *myelination* in the brain, so this actually makes perfect sense to why Sidney as a character is so forgetful, he effectively suffered brain damage from the fire. Granted we don't know if engines in the series actually have actual brains or any vital organs for that matter, but it's still nice to see the concept of "Acute Inhalation" included here. It's a good reminder to the audience that if there's a fire, the reason we're told to stay well back is for our own health, not just safety.

In Something in the Air, Henry spots out water, which means the engines have lungs. The grey faces are also seen blushing, meaning they have blood. We can’t forget the brain, it sends signals to the parts of the body to keep it in check.

Maybe diesel 10 was very abusive towards diesels like den, dart Paxton, Norman and Sidney making him more of an abuser and a hypocrite not to mention he nearly committed murder

It really does make sense that the fire at the dieselworks was the cause of Sidney’s memory loss, it’s unfortunate that did happen but at least he’s still alive so there’s a positive to all that.

That’s what most people think is the reason why Sidney turned into dory with short term memory loss.
In my opinion, Sidney is like Dory from Finding Nemo, he suffers from Short-term Memory Loss
But I guess we all have our theories why Sidney is so forgetful
He likely is suffering from short term memory loss and the fire just made it worse. As far as I can tell his long term memory is intact.

An idea to help Sidney is to give him his own brake van that can help him remember his jobs like a personal aid in school

The irony being that his driver could effectively do the same thing. That's the main plot hole with Sidney's character. He already has a human for a personal aid. (This story does a great job explaining how it happened, though.)
That’s such cool lore to give an engine, you think it’s wrong that smoke would affect an engine, but then you think about it, and that kinda does make sense. Really do like this little story, and kinda glad it gives a bit more of a story/reason for Sidney!
personally i like to think looking at the episode Sidney sings and DOTD i like to think it was Sidney's accident that caused his absent mindedness if it's getting worse then at least he's got friends to look out for him. And it does make Sidney one of the more complex character's to come out of DOTD so good show.
That was a great short. It does make sense on how Sidney became forgetful.
This was absolutely brilliant! I never really liked Sidney because of the fact that he was too forgetful but now the fact that this explains everything makes me kind of like him a little bit more. Overall another piece of lore added to the series and I like it. Keep up the good work Nathan!

It has been recently confirmed in canon in the 2013 Writer’s Bible Norman who worked in some marshaling yard along with Paxton got to Sodor by steamship and Sidney mindlessly followed them onto the ship, meaning canonically he already had his memory problems before coming to Sodor but as we know this idea was thought of for quite some time before. I did wonder before if whatever incident he had with his wheels caused his memory problems (we still don’t know how that happened, maybe sometime just shortly a few days or weeks before DOTD he just had an accident with the trucks pushing him off the line and damaging them badly).
Brilliant episode as always.
I never even considered that as a reason for Sidney’s forgetfulness, it never even struck me he was in there during the fire, geez…

I was bullied for 8 years and I have a little bit of memory loss myself (nowhere near as bad as Syndey's), because of that, I can relate to him
I had a feeling it was Diesel 10 that was responsible for Sidney’s memory problems
Personally I have a bit of darker and somewhat more interesting story idea but this is a more grounded theory and it makes sense.
I always assumed Sydney’s memory was bad cause the corners of his face were smoothed down
So it was Diesel 10 that caused Sidney's memory lost,not surprising,Diesel 10 is know for causing trouble,that's just part of his crazy nature.
I always thought Sidney suffered the equivalent to a head injury. Sidney wasn't actually in the Dieselworks during the fire. We never heard him calling for help. Plus he was gone when Kevin and Happy Hook were playing.
No wonder Sidney was such a forgetful diesel, it was Diesel 10 that caused the fire and left him behind while the fire was burning and causing Sidney’s memory to be fuzzy and now he’s all muddled with anything that could get him wrong

It’s a shame that Sidney has a short term memory loss when the fire at the Diesel Works started when Diesel 10 caused the fire with his claw creaking those sparks.
First I think it was just a fault in his build that could have caused memory loss, second that was true, it seems that everyone had forgot that he was hanging in there when the fire happened, third I want to see an episode where the diesels try to fix him rather than just talk about it.
I already guessed that Sidney lost his braincells from the Dieselworks fire in "Day of the diesels".

NGL, the tone of that last little bit just felt really off, like it was both meant to be funny and really dark and fucked up at the same time. The way Dart was talking about how maybe they could have done something to help Sydney, then they all pretended to have forgotten what they were talking about, then how it ended with all of them laughing together, it just honestly felt a bit disturbing to me. I think it's because the topic of memory loss is something that's very serious and kinda horrifying if you really think about it, but everything around it was structured like a normal funny Thomas story, so the contrast made everything even more unsettling. Not sure if that's what you were going for or not.
You're free to draw your own conclusion but what i meant by it was nothing malicious just simply. Sidney arrives back, The pretend they weren't talking about him, and he just tells them he's glad they're friends. Meant to be an "AWWW how sweet!" kind of moment.
