Peter Erskine describes one of the most important lessons he had was from Joe Zawinul. Joe Zawinul told Peter Erskine to compose when he played a drum solo. He clearly does that in this solo and any other solo he played which I've heard. He never relies on rudiments and remains supremely musical and emotionaly expressive.
I absolutely love all of the space he used, it’s magnificent abs adds drama and suspense without being overbearing on the music. His musicality is beautiful as well, you can hear the music and rhythm 🥁 in all his fills. One of my all time favorite drummers ❤️
He could throw something in there, that would be impossible to describe in music notation and make it sound intentional and emotional, but always with simplicity in mind, without resorting to overly complex odd figures. Few others on any instrument have reached the same level of control and expressiveness. I am glad to have lived in the same century as this wonderful musician.
peter the master of....living space in music......little show of deep sound ...like abstract paintings ,some time they say more with less... then...to mutch visual tecniques without deept....every were colours.............ok peter erskine the picasso of drumming !...silence please....ting ting ti ging ....douggg..
You guys enamored with the stuff past the 3:00 mark are missing the point. The stuff at the end is Erskine's bag of "crowd pleaser" tricks. The real meat is in the rest of the solo. Peter Erskine's sense of time-flow and subdivision is just phenomenal. This is one of the most subtle, sophisticated solos I've seen in a while- not because of his 'chops'; because Peter is making 100% use of space, subdivision and front/mid/back beat placement.
at 2:31-2:36!!! was he doing the hi-hat first before he chokes the crash????? cant see his hand hitting the hi-hat nor stepping on the hi-hat pedal.. so cool ahhaaha
I knew that would get a rise... : ) Just doing some drummer ball breakin' Of course Erskine is the sound of WR. Chester Thomson ain't no slouch though as witnessed by some of the bands he has performed with over the years.
They are both percussive instruments : ) I play keyboards like drums... Did you like WR with Jaco? The best drummer WR ever had was Chester............Boy, I can't wait to get that feedback..; )
@GoGoNards I don't get it, he's playing consistently great the whole time. I'm not seeing that what he plays at 3:00 stands out above the rest of the track
but literally anything you play on drums is a rudiment lol... You can hit a drum once and it'd be a single stroke roll. It's about how you turn those rudiments into melody's and phrases that makes a great drum solo which Peter demonstrates so perfectly
I don't understand the meaning of your comment, it is equivalent to saying "very hard to find a guitar soloist that doesn't depend on 7 notes to express himself"
@@fardrum when I mean not using rudiments, I mean the technical avalanche of doubles, fast singles, paradiddles and flams, etc... obviously using single strokes is using a rudiment, somehow, but no one says that an Iron Butterfly drum solo is full of rudiments. ..I don't know if I explain myself...
Well my friend, you can't be a drummer, because you didn't agree with my statement. : )... We really can't argue opinion so I will acquiesce and state for the record that both drummers are at the pinnacle of their professions and each brings an admirable technique to their instruments. I assumed mentioning him in the same class as Gadd was homage enough. For my money Carl Palmer is the best living drummer, along with Simon Phillips, Copeland et al. Dead drummers;Don't get me started : ) Peace
: ) If you're a drummer, you'll agree with me... If you love WR on the other hand you may be a bit preferential. That being said; Gadd would triple ratamacue flamacue his ass. : ) Erskine is a great drummer, though...
Is this really laid back? I think it is but I am unsure. and btw I am only seven years old so don't give me hard time for asking what you may consider to be a stupid question. Thanks. -Davey.

This guys always plays what needs to be played and it always makes sense. Humble and grandiose at the same time.
This is the first drum set solo I have ever loved. Wonderful.
That settles it.
I'm gonna go grow a mustache and set my click track on rumba clave..

Peter the Great! Not every drum solo has to be chock full of notes. This solo is played tastefully and with great feel!
@3:40 is amazing stuff feel wise. That musicality! wow...
It’s almost 2020 and this is still some dope playing! Dopeness never dies!!
Arise Sir Peter, you are the chosen One!
interesting to see how so many great drummers of that time played on the yamaha 9000
that shit was so damn popular
awesome video
Phrasing and musicality. Masterful.
Freaking inspiring....you can tell the way he spaces out his fills that he can listen to himself playing.
FANTASTIC!
Almost sitting on the floor!
Great playing. Thats a good solid kit.
No weapons, not an army, no politics, no words, It takes Erskine a single fucking tom tom to rule the world....
my favorite part about this is he looks like your neighbor's dad the quality control engineer.
😂👍 or, "Gee, Mr. Whipple kicks ass!" 😂 The guys a classic BEAST!!!
1 excellent video that is full of syncopated perfection

Sits so low . Saw some footage of Vinnie with Frank Zappa and he used to sit impossibly low also , ditto for early Weckl in the elektric band ...

Best low toms and bass drum ever?
3:18, bricks shat.

He looks exactly like the father of a girl that my gf and I went to school with.
Very hard to find a drum soloist that does not depend on rudiments to express himself...

your much better with your shirt on.
Marco Minneman couldnt play this... ever.
"technically" speaking he could - but FEEL WISE no - Ive seen MANY of his videos - what Im referring to is MUSICIANSHIP versus complex drummer geekdom
jesus christ!
