When I watch a lot of those videos of the Guitar Centre Drum Off finalists, while the drummers have chops to spare and it is a different style of music none of those solos swing like this. Call me old fashioned but I get more kicks out of watching a Peter Erskine or Steve Gadd solo than any of the young guns. Each to their own I guess. Lovely sounding kit by the way. Congrats Peter and Tama.
You are correct. I like players like Erskine,Hamilton,Blade,Stewart,Hoenig, Larnell Lewis for solos because their solos have context to songs they play. Most of the stuff you see done by touring clinicians bore the f"#k out of me. All of them have wicked technique so I appreciate it to that level but it gets redundant. I'm happy to try to sponge up some of the technical things but I'm almost never moved by them musically. Peter has blown me away playing a second line-based solo,latin-based solo,etc...In every instance the solos were built around and had context to the melody of the song he was playing.
i wish he just played and played for hours. this is what drumming in my mind is. incredibly beautiful sounding kit, incredible touch, incredibly musical soloing. really a master on the throne....
For me it doesn't matter so much what kind of drums Peter is playing, it's all about his musicianship, his beautiful chops and ideas, the flow of his masterful improvisations. He's in top form. One of the all time greats.
***** Regardless as to whether the tone is a product of the recording, I've heard many promotional recordings of high end drum kits at various ranges of tuning (high to medium, don't really hear low tuning that much on promotional material like this) and this sound in particular appeals a great deal more than any other I have heard. No doubt this is a recording that is affected by the mics, room size and other non-drum kit related variables, but the natural sound of the toms, with choices such as head selection, tuning and playing style would certainly have a significant effect on the sound.
June 5th: Happy birthday Drummer Peter Erskine of Weather Report and Steps Ahead. Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, TAMA Drums Official. Blessings
Magnificent sound! Best out there in my opinion. And great performance from Erskine! I'd like some videos featuring the starclassic Maple and Bubinga sets though. They are wildly underrepresented , at least when it comes to quality recordings such as these. I've already ordered my SC Bubinga, it's due in a couple of months. But for future reference it would be nice with quality productions featuring the SC Maple and Bubinga. Cheers from Sweden!
I'm getting 10x7 12x8 14x14 and 16x16. Coupled with a 22x16 kick and a 18x14 kick. I'm thinking these sizes will allow me great versatility in setups. :)
Anton J Olsson Awesome! I dig the different sized bass drums! I have a Tama Silverstar with 13x9, 16x16, and 18x16 toms along with 26x14 and 22x18 bass drums. It's pretty fun messing around with African style flams, triplets, and polyrhythms on the bass drums, I use it quite a bit with jazz. Is Ginger Baker an influence of yours?
All right man, cool! :) I wasn't really planning on using them simultaneously, Except maybe in like a Stanton Moore setting with the bigger kick off to the right. But hey, when they're here it's a playground for me to discover :). No, Mr Baker would not be in my list of influences really. Is he on yours?
+dzarren Why would that be hilarious? Pedals are like shoes, if they fit, then why not use them (regardless of what they're called or who they're marketed to)?
Superb drummer, but i'm not crazy about his jazz tuning.. The drums are clearly tuned way beyond it's sizes entails, and that's ok for jazz, but i feel like had he tuned them just a little lower, the true tone, power and finesse nuances of the drums would be much more prevalent..Whatever the case Mr. Erskine's the man. A true legend..
Peter is a dear friend, so he knows from where I'm coming. The 2nd FTT sounds like it should (sustains with a low bottom) but the BD, the largest drum sounds like a box. Tama make a great product, but why mufflle it so and remove any resonance and bottom that BDs should have? Peter knows exactly how to control a wide open bass drum. If he or the techs removed any muffle rings, blankets, pillows, whatever, Peter would have the perfect set for his musical endeavors.
Sounds great but I think he should have chosen his drum finish just the same as his left side snare (omg this side snare!). I personally hate this flashy yellow!
Vincent Duez The first time I ever saw Peter in the early 80s he was playing a yellow kit with Weather Report (and yes, probably influenced by Tony Williams). That is the kit I always associate him with - it's nice to see the yellow back!
This is one of the nicest sounding recordings of a drum set I have ever heard.
perfect sound of drum set
Poetry in motion...pure and simple. Love Peter’s smooth effortless paying...
Never fails to deliver playing musically on the drums. First class player!
The Best. Subtile phrasing, rythmic melodicism. Really one of a kind.

Subjectively speaking, this is the best sounding gear I've heard Mr. Erskine play thus far...
Great to see Peter Erskine back on drums that match his delicate touch

Those toms! Such a great tone, wish I could get my kit sounding that nice.
you´re right. Those toms sound amazing!

George Can'tstandya I love your display name. That is all.
@@CtrlSaltDelete I would like to hear Peter playing these drums with one Neumann 10' in front
@@sweetsweetjanice I'd like to hear Peter play these drums with Newman 10' in front.
These are some of the best sounding drums around today.
Oh man, so beautiful ,and such sick playing :-) wow

This is drumming at the highest possible & musical level.
I can see an enormous pleasure by Peter for playing this kit. Haven't seen like this before.
thank you Mr. Erskine
you appear as if you're truly enjoying yourself
Awesome. Great sounding, great looking kit.
Of course a lot of the kit sounding this good is this mans playing
What can b said pure sound quality and bye far absolute ! legendary drummer. One of my favorites. Ridiculous technical proficiency 💪
oh my god every hit is so perfect! what a master
Too awesome. Just beautiful touch. The drums themselves don't excite me but he is a terrific player.
Sweet. So relaxed yet precise. PE makes it look so easy and fun.
Great drummer, I've been playing his signature ride sticks for like 20 years. Once I tried them I never went back to any other stick and on it goes.
Great playing and awesome musician!
That tri tone between the 10’ and 12’ toms sounds amazing.
Awesome. I just love the solo. As always, you play fantastisk Peter.
Best Drum Heads and Best Cymbals😊 of course a Legend!
Well, that was amazing
Stunning piece. Amazing sounding kit...
My favorite drummer!
I have a nice set of Ludwigs I might give them another go. This man is an inspiration. His timing is perfect .
That touch though! So good
That was amazing
One of the greatest right there.
I love the very simple style of Peter, put a few things in the right place
Beautiful.
Amazing composition.
Incredible.
as usual.....great !
That guys not playing the drums hes painting a picture.. I was blessed to see him in billingham forum theatre years ago incredible
Best drummer in the world
So melodic. Nice!
Having a complete understanding of the musicality of your drumkit
Hi all.
Does anyone know if he is still with Tama today, in 2019?
Magnificent sound! Best out there in my opinion. And great performance from Erskine!
I'd like some videos featuring the starclassic Maple and Bubinga sets though.

Anton J Olsson What sizes did you order?

Yes. He uses different sized bass drums so I was thinking you got the idea there. ;)
very musical, beautiful sound. was waiting for him to nail that splash, but...nope! Leave 'em wanting more, heh heh...
Love Peter and Jimmy Chamberlain also Dennis chambers all groove , pocket players 😆😆😆😄😄😅😃😃😃😂😂😁😁 just like myself . Feel the music and timing.
This is amazing
É..., um bicho refinado e uma batera de alta qualidade.
Peter Star Tama Star!!! Great.
This kit is mind blowing I have a maple star classic and a birch bubinga and I want a maple star
This makes me happy
Yeah,he looks so happy sometimes back there.. like he's getting a bj.
These are the Steinway piano equivalent for drums. Along with Craviotto solid shells, these are finest sounding drums I've heard. Tuned perfectly too.
Is anyone going to mention that finish though?
When do we get to stop putting though at the end of sentences?
Tama certainly make great snares, including the less expensive SLP line.
Anyone know what pedals he uses? It would be hilarious if he was using the speed cobras :P
+dzarren Why would that be hilarious? Pedals are like shoes, if they fit, then why not use them (regardless of what they're called or who they're marketed to)?
what ride cymbal is that?
The way it's hammered...it looks like a 20-22 Zildjian K Constantinople
and the hi hat?? pleasee!
a custom new beat hi-hat from zildjian
Unreal.
these drums sounds so fucking good
Genius.
Did Pete go all in and switch kick pedals to the speed cobra too or is he still using that fatiguing DW 9000?
Rolling glide according to his MD cover story June 2016
great!!!
Feel you from here brother!
If you watch some of he's videos with DW you'll notice that he was kind of fighting the drums...with this TAMA kit he is floating...
I don't play TAMAs
I had no idea that Rob Reiner played drums this well.
you're thinking of another drummer, this is Carl Reiner
Actually this is Kevin Spacey.
Did he switch to Remo also?
Caleb yes.
Pinocchio 🤯 Sightseeing
Find the quarter note then play quarter note triplets; diddle each note now. It sounds cool!

An actual artist on drums, like Bill Bruford or Christian Vander or Louis Cole perhaps, Erskine is in his own league as all great artists are.
TONE!
This guy's unreal
Peter 🔥🔥🫶
Neil Peart took lessons from this great drummer.
Well played, nice phrasing, this is a drum solo, not a bunch of random notes and chops.

Can he tune those any higher? ugh. That bass drum sounds like a tomato can.
too bad he downgraded from yamaha
