  • Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" smashes records. Questlove thinks this beef signals the death of Hip Hop. J. Cole supposedly came out looking the best. And another example of Drake's lack of imagination. Here are a few thoughts on other aspects of Drake versus Kendrick.

Thanks for the support, Analysts. I'm getting a lot of questions about what songs J.Cole took shots at Kendrick. Here's a few off top: Johnny p's Caddy, January 28th, Fire Squad, GOMD, First Person Shooter.
Also, Rocafella is named after a street dude in brooklyn who allegedly died of AIDS. Not Rockerfeller. Bad example but the point about rap battles not having to be all about truth still stands. Compared to Beans, Jay-z is not wack. Roxanne Shante was not only good for steady fcking. You guys see my point, but I just wanted to clear that up as well.
Also, if you like the content, please support the channel. I'm in a great rhythm and I want to keep it going. Yall are the illest.

@TheCompanyMan is have to disagree with your take of J. Cole taking sneaky shots at Kendrick. I’ve seen a few where he talks about an ambiguous king of hip hop, which makes sense when “The Big 3” is a thing. Fire Squad, for example, is more about his opinion on the idea of being the king of rap. And frankly speaking, he isn’t wrong on his thinking after what Kendrick says on Like That.
Kendrick even talks about how he knows that him wanting the crown is in itself a push away from his peace. I think Cole just realized it wasn’t worth the smoke. Though I must admit that Cole has been saying he’s willing to get the smoke for like two years now only to back off when the time comes.

Something interesting to add here is: Drake started this off by mentioning splits on push ups. Kendrick flipped that on him by lifting copyrights to let reaction channels eat off their videos. Kendrick can do that because he actually has control over his music…Drake can’t lift copyrights because he doesn’t have control over it. So that’s a subtle diss in itself.

Not to step on your point, but I don't really get how this is a flex, Drake openly wants to make as much money as possible. I can't imagine a world where he would choose to intentionally give away money he could be making.
I don't think there's a single thing that Kendrick could do as far as his label goes that Drake would want to do, or would be jealous of. He's just in it to make money and have fun.
Pglang is still under Interscope, that's their parent company, and they have a publishing deal with UMG if I remember right.

Well check this out, I can lift copyright and intentionally lose mine..foiled again Drizzy!"

I also disagree with Questlove, but to be fair this is the same sentiment that The Roots expressed during “The War of the Coasts” when Illadelph/Halflife came out. Of course, he did change his mind for Nas vs Jay Z. Hip-Hop has an audience now that simply doesn’t know what these sorts of things use to look like. While Drake came to meme-lord over Kendrick, Kendrick went for total war and his whole operation operated as such.
I think the back channels between Kendrick’s and Cole’s camp were strong-enough that he was able to be “persuaded” to back down.
As Justin says, Drake lacks the insight to hurt Kendrick where he’d bleed. Drake just doesn’t understand what-existentially-what Kendrick values, while Kendrick doesn’t respect what Drake values which ensured this beef would never go Drake’s way.
You could also have added the fact with Cole that, for all the comparisons with Kendrick, their stance on the LGBT community divides them sharply as, given his pronounced homophobia and transphobia, J Cole ain’t making no Aunty Diaries (pedantic criticisms of that song not withstanding).

I think that Drake has serious “character flaws” and if either Jay-Z or Nas had the same issues, they would have been aired out for that. Instead, it was two street dudes beefing. Tupac and biggie weren’t nearly as “flawed” as Drake was either. But in beef, you use any existing breadcrumbs to amplify a story about someone. Drake needed to be outed. The open secret had to be discussed.

    • @user-yr8ge3fz8o
      @user-yr8ge3fz8o 4 месяца назад +1

@@Jahmallanders83Biggie and especially Pac were very flawed figures, they just had very admirable traits as well (Drake I would say does not). After Pac survived his first shooting, he was very toxic and unbridled, which is understandable as a trauma response, but still. People are calling this beef nasty, but Hit Em Up is genuinely a horrifically toxic and sad song, especially taken in context. We still dont know exactly what led to the deaths of these rappers, and frankly I think the government was actually involved but that's another story. Still it is likely that their feud (which was largely fueled by Tupac) played a role, and that deadly, unbridled hatred is perfectly represented by Hit Em Up. It makes Not Like Us look like middle school gossip.

Completely right about Cole. This internet narrative about him wisely foreseeing the beef and rising above it is pure BS. He made a delusional claim about the 'Big 3', released a diss track, and then retracted it when he realized he's simply not built for this. He is a fine, mid-level rapper and one who belongs nowhere near GOAT conversations.

Alot of good points about Drake. As someone in my 40s I could respect Questlove's POV but one of Kendrick's biggest point through this beef is the homogenization of rap/black culture and Drake's lack of wherewithal to understand he is a visitor. I would love a song with Kendrick and MosDef called sku's lol.

I think questlove is wildly overreacting. I get that there's some mudslinging going around, but it's okay for two people to go back and forth saying what they think about each other, and it's extra okay to do it on wax. Until this moves into real world violence, or either of them even really seem like they want to take it there, I don't see how you could say this has gone too far

The Queen Latifa stance is expected and such a trash take imo.
It's the classic "Yeah, but why didn't we do better 20 years ago" argument. No. We did not consider women and children and the impact that those beefs were having on them... Which is why we should consider them now!
We've seen beef ruin careers, paint the culture with a black eye, and hurt our own people. Don't you think Cole thought about that when he made his move? We should be celebrating the growing conscience of the community, not shunning it imo

Okay, so I am a fan of Kendrick for sure, but so you not think that we're reaching a bit far with some of the entendre pulls. A minor being on only white keys is probably coincidental, i still think he wrote the better songs (my personal favourite of the whole beef is Euphoria) but I feel like it's getting a bit much with the reaching for any tiny link that can be made to every single line no matter how vague. The A minor keys being white actually has a potential direct dig involved but nobody is going to hear that and think about key colour and how Drake is a "white boy" as Ross said. I've seen much bigger reaches though.
