I also noticed that she threw the pregnancy test in the tub, and that the Ash robot was "born" in the tub
ash warned her in a way before he died. the convo about the fake smile in his photo. she stated that his mother didn't know it was fake and he said that makes it worse as she later found out.
this just made me rethink the entire episode. thank you for commenting! I think this really is the core of the story. Ash wouldn't have wanted himself to be made into a artificial intelligence.
whoa
Damn. Mind blown
@@ericmartinii6288 mind fucking blown
So deep
One thing you don't really touch on that I really felt was how the fake ash ruined her life. In today's world she would have mourned horribly but eventually moved on. She would have had her daughter and ruibuilt her life. Possibly getting married and having more kids eventually. Instead her life was effectively ended. Stuck forever with the echo of a memeory that she will always be aware of sitting in the attic.
Exactly. She never got to go through the grieving process properly because she tried so hard to keep him alive when he wasn’t.
She can sell that nigga to Goodwill she dont gotta keep him up there. The daughter go understand
Sean Dafny omfg lol
PurpleRose7777 this is such a good point. I feel strongly that she kept him around intentionally, like she stored away those images of her brother in the attic earlier. She could have thrown them out and thereby erased their influence and existence in her life, but she chooses not to. She’d rather live a miserable life with the echos of her past keeping her from a happy future.
I'm surprised you didn't touch up on the fact that her child never called the robot "Dad" but instead "Ash".
Kæla Brown Well that wasn't really her dad. So I don't think she told her that it was her dad.
Indys Nah it's not her dad, you could say that if it had a consciences and all the memories.
Indys I agree with u
Luke Ed nah watch westworld my guy
I believe the child acknowledges that Ash is just a robot - the mere fact that she called him Ash instead of Dad is already implying that; also, that she brought him a cake even though she knows that he doesn't consume food.
One thing I'm thinking about is that the mother perhaps did not even tell the child who is her father in order not to confuse the child. Thus, perhaps, the child perceives Ash as some friendly stranger that is always in the same room and that you can talk to when you feel the need. Perhaps, the mother doesn't even let her visit Ash whenever she wants but only on special occasions.
It's clearly implied Ash died in a car accident
At the beginning when they're together, Martha makes it a point to get him to put his phone in the glove box, and the car's center console displays a message reminding them to drive safe, which the camera focuses on
But when he leaves on his own, the one thing he does before he drives off is take his phone out of his pocket, and as he finishes punching in the passcode the camera cuts to an exterior shot, taking our attention away before we see the warning message again
It's a small thing, but very apt as another commentary on technology and how it affects us
Lazypackmule
So moral of the story put your phone away or your girlfriend will replace you with a robot when you die?
I love details like these. The writers are amazing. Thank you for spotting that and sharing!!!
You'll get replaced either way, whether it be a robot or another person
No, he killed himself by driving off the cliff.
Kenchi Chibi what makes you say that?
I myself noticed a sentence she said on the cliff scene, which i believe could be a rather unnoticable referance. She says: "Youre only ripples of you, there is no history of you" referencing episode 3 of last season. Imagine the realities of both episodes together, as in putting a deceased human's "grain" in one of those robots. He'd then know exactly how to react in almost any situation.
Stav Katz yea but then why even have robots if u can jus look at ur grain and relive that shit
You can only watch not relive with the grain and no building any future. But then I still wonder if over time the robot with a learning ability and access to the Internet would just completely surpass his human character and become something different and unpredictable..
your comment is giving “altered carbon” vibes and i loved that show!
It really hit me towards the end when he called the photo funny
noodleman me too idk why exactly
That part is meaningful because the real Ash tweeted that the photo was “funny,” but deep down hated it because it showed his fake smile masking grief. The robot Ash only had access to his tweet, so he thought it was simply funny. This crushed Martha because it showed how empty and incomplete this imitation of her lover was.
Abigail M man I’m gonna cry now lol
@@abigailc6326 that got me thinking how would a social media version of us would act and look like, he/she must be perfect, beautiful, happy, motivated, etc.
Haylee atwell was sooo good in this episode
Wait that wasn't Daisy Ridley?
@@chrishansen8649 she's beaut
SO THAT'S WHY SHE LOOKS FAMILIAR
This was the first episode of Black Mirror I ever watched, and I was hooked instantly. Such a brilliant satire with a fantastic melancholy feel throughout and a painful ending. The acting was extraordinary from both leads. Excellent review.
Thanks man, it's weird because I wouldn't say this is a review so to speak, I don't think I've ever disliked an episode of Black Mirror, which is probably why I try to keep opinions out of these seeing as there's so much to analyse. I would try to praise it to high heaven but it's pretty straight forward why this show is so excellent, haven't seen anybody truly dislike the show either.
Loopy Plays I am yeah. People were far too distracted by the awesome content of this channel to notice some toy reviewer of course!
I watced the first episode with my dad and he got hooked on it with me but it was so awkward durring the sex scenes i wanted to die
Christian Buskirk lol
The pig fucking scene mustve been fun for you
Wtf
that is why I don't watch movies with family anymore , to much adult content
Christian Buskirk ahahaha thank you for this opportunity you have offered me to laugh at your pain
(I know. I am awful. I'm sorry, mate. Awkwardness during sex scene in shows and films when with family/relatives? We've all been there)
I also really liked the concept in this episode that people try to paint a better picture about themselves on social media (or... you know, actual photographs) so if we try to replicate a person solely by their social media activities it would give a very offputing, fake result. It's similar to the central theme of Nosedive but still effective here as well.
said like a true addict. I could shut off social media if I wanted to....but I don't....but believe me I "could," lol we are all on the same boat in the end
Well said,, if this was referring to drug use would that statement still stand?
I totally get it, but tbh it's not really a good comparison. I am an Internet addict, ironically because of the social isolation brought on by a former *real* drug addiction. Actual physical addiction is MUCH worse. If my Internet was shut off, I would hate it, but I wouldn't start vomiting, sweating, feeling achy or burning, having panic attacks, feeling suidical etc.
(I am no expert on this matter, but I'm just going to put this out there)
That does depend on the severity of the addiction. If you have completely cut yourself off from the rest of the world and the only thing to comfort you is your phone or tablet, and then the Internet shuts off - i.e. the only thing you feel gives your life any meaning suddenly disappears - one of two things may happen after your emotional outrage: you may either try to remedy the problem by finding out what caused the outage (while this is possible, it's not likely as you may have to go ask someone to help you), or you may start punishing yourself for your great loss, which may include panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. Keep in mind this is an extremely severe situation and probably the worst case scenario (also as I mentioned before, I'm no expert). Kurzgesagt did a video on how addiction works and I really think it's worth checking out even if you don't have an interest in this.
I would call myself an expert after what I went through, the detox, specialists and volumes of research I've read. More of an expert than probably a lot of doctors (unfortunately). They are NOT the same thing. You can literally die from being cut off from a substance, but you will not die from being cut off from your phone or tablet. As in, not suicide, not going crazy, but dying from withdrawal. It's impossible. And all the other effects are very unlikely to be as severe. You will not have hundreds of panic attacks (not exaggerating). Maybe a few. Nor will you start convulsing or get diarrhea. Sorry it's just an irritating comparison to me.
I'm not really addicted to the internet, though I'm addicted to learning about new things and that just happens to be more on internet than boring books these days. The only reason I spend more time on the internet is because I find the people around me not relatable and very generic. It maybe that I haven't found that right category of select people to speak my mind with but I'd rather not waste time chasing after people.
I always enjoyed this episode because its the most human of the bunch. Yeah it has a robot in it but it delves into human emotion and grief and the struggle to show emotion when your programmed emotionless. The way its shot is that its always just sad, I never feel happy when watching this episode and its not just in parts but the entire time its just nothing but sadness.
Yames true:(
Me too. I rarely cry about movies or series but this episode made me cry 😢. I remembered my dad's last phone call that was recorded by my sis. We kept replaying it when he just passed away.
The part in the episode when he was like I learned it from porn. It is funny because that is how lots of people learn how to do things from watching porn but in actuality porn is no help whatsoever. 😂
Jah Boy in some aspects it's a great tool, but I never heard of anyone staying the night after someone jack rabbit them for 15 minutes lol
It's pretty silly. Porn is interested in providing a visual fantasy for a viewer. Learning sex techniques from porn would be great for satisfying someone with rather conventional tastes who was watching you have sex, but wouldn't be that much fun for the people actually having the sex.
Porn is very helpful as a learning tool.
That scene made me think, that either the authors of this episode have never seen porn or they think they are good in bed because of porn while their girlfriends always fake orgasms
Yea but he was beating them cheeks no lie
I thought it was weird that she kept him in the end, I know it looks like Ash but it was never really him and it would eventually become a burden on Martha's life. I suppose once the child became friends with it was too hard to get rid of it which is why Martha looked quite upset and motionless at the end because she probably knew she should never have brought him back in the first place.
TheSpecialOne Getting rid of him would also essentially be her watching her husband die. She didn't want to relive that.
Jeff Sol
Did anyone else think of this?, that's a sexbot now.
Jeff Sol lol you sly dog
TheSpecialOne she had dreams about that night
Honestly, I can only frame the ending as a callback to the beginning of the episode where Ash explains that his mother had to tuck away the photos of her dead son first and husband second as she couldn't cope with her grief so well. So this ending tells me that Martha is unable to cope with her grief in a healthy manner up to the present day, that's why she keeps the robot-Ash around but tucked away as something she is a little bit ashamed of. Plus, he is just human enough that ordering him to commit suicide would probably feel like murdering him, that's why she cannot go through with it after he starts pleading for his life on her cue.
2:00 "I could stop any time I want to, I just don't want to" XD
Amelia Bee
I noticed that as well: it sounds like I did just before my addiction kicked in, no joke.
Amelia Bee he can't stop he wouldn't have this RUclips channel without it.
Addiction.
The fact that he is even talking about this an not just analyzes the episode, is even more suspicious 😂🙈
Denial
I'd like to add that it's clearly implied that the real Ash wasn't the ideal lover; perhaps even lacking when it came to sex. It's somewhat difficult to tell for certain, but Martha seems disappointed with the real-Ash's sexual performance. The not-so-real-Ash is infact the 'ideal' lover (having mentioned not knowing anything of the real-Ash's sexual performance, he learned from pornography) and it seems that Martha is initially satisfied, but then, realises that the not-so-real-Ash is exactly that; ideal, fake, practiced. Not only does this highlight the message of not knowing what you have until it's gone, but i think it may also be a acknowledgement to the idea that the expectations of one's experiences (whether that be sexual, romantic, or even just life experience) is derived from social media, which in itself, is often the best version of someone.
what if they upped the sad/disturbing factor by making robot ash pretty close to the real ash's sexual performance? What if ash posted sexual videos of himself from before they met or w/o her knowledge because he had an side to him she didnt know about online thus making the impact of technology more stark? often when a loved one dies, you learn secrets about them and things theyve kept from you, even if you were in a relationship and since he was online so much hes bound to have something online that he hid from her.
I really enjoyed these past four videos on Black Mirror. You delve into subjects and information that never occurred to me while watching this brilliant show and I thank you for it. Can't wait for the next one!
I hadn't even noticed the stuff with the brother as a comparison.
I just couldn't believe someone would want to suggest such a thing as "helping". Sara seemed out of touch and while she seemed well-meaning, I kind of hated her for not only suggesting, but forcing something on someone who was so vulnerable and is completely unhealthy.
It's like when my pet died and someone needed a pet sitter like two weeks later. At first I was like "yes, please" then it hit me how much I would cry, their pet was not mine, would not act like mine, nor likely take to me to be of some comfort, and in the end would be given back. At first my friend didn't understand why I didn't want what they thought might be of some comfort either. But how would that not occur to people that it's preventing the healing process? That was a pet, I can't comprehend that with a person.
Ash to her how her mum but photos of dead relatives in the attic to forget them and she did the same
Seneve Shemisi OMG I DIDNT GOT THAT PART. FUCK MINDBLOWN
I forgot about that little detail.
Seneve Shemisi what the fuck is that sentence i cant even read it lmao
@@Elcoonn Ash's mother would put the photos of deceased relatives in her attic after they died, she would do this to forget about them and move on, Martha does the same with robot Ash at the end of the episode, storing him in the attic to forget about him, but the fact that she didn't completely get rid of him when she had the chance (When she went to the cliff with Robot Ash and wanted him to jump off) and that she still occasionally sees him shows she has not completely moved on.
It's symbolic that his name is Ash.

Anyone feel bad for the AI in this episode? He just wants to please her and tries his hardest to do his job, and she, to him, inexplicably gets upset for seemingly no reason.
Sure, if it’s just an AI it probably doesn’t actually have consciousness, but if in this universe living AI can be created in a simulation, I’d think it’s possible that the AI featured in this episode does truly feel
I'm sure most men can relate to the AI. Women are complicated enough for us let alone an AI to figure out 🤣
I know she was kinda pissing me off actually.
@Nim Chimpsky Finally someone said it. I really had no sympathy for her once the AI was there.
Looks like you would make a great ai owner...
>Gets upset for no reason
Are you being serious? She has very valid reason to be upset, did you not pay attention at all to the episode. Its literally her dealing with the death of her partner, she gets more unstable because of the AI not being the same, he's just a shell of memories. She has every right to get mad.
when she dropped her phone in the clinic and started panicking I felt her pain so much, in a weird fucked up kind of way. You know it's just a simulation or an app of some sort, but because of the life like responses the program gave, it was unsettling for a time. I also got major Frankenstein vibes when the robot got activated in the tub. I needed some gin after that episode.
this was one of my favorite episodes. made me really think would i do something like that. that's what I love about this show.
i don't really know why but this was one of the most uncomfortable episodes of black mirror in my opinion. i cried almost the entire time and the ending was so fucking intense and disturbing. just gross. i loved it but it was gross
Exorsizzle Explains! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
nah i didnt really feel anything with this, and i usually do with bm episodes. the one that hit me and is my favorite is fifteen million credits
Exactly how I felt
I was the most upset with Where's Waldo
Exorsizzle
Oh, pleaaase calm down!
in Ex Machina he was in love with the AI, and now he is the AI.
1:59 that sounds like something an addict would say ...
Revazide that is EXACTLY what I thought 😂
Revazide 😂😂😂
I thought the same. It almost made me laugh! I don't think people actually realize how deeply affected we are by social media, our phone or computer.
I enjoyed the episode and the analysis both pretty much! However, am I the only one who notices that at the beginning we overhear from the radio news that new prosthetic joint/legs are on their way to help patients, but boom after a several mounths(supposedly) we get a full functioning human body? This can't be a coincidence, why could it be mentioned?
DeathSkuul ugsl
DeathSkuul
You over analyzing this shitty Episode.
I watched this episode and I cried the whole time
I was saying EWWWW the whole time
R bet u was soggy from the tears
same
R truly the consistently saddest BM episode out there
I know, that shoe part in the begining really got to me too. 😓
On the subject of companies/businesses playing with your emotions for profit: It kind of reminds me of those documentaries that would air on channel 5 called things like "The boy with no face" or "The octopus girl"; the producers advertise the documentary as "look at this amazing person dealing with this disability/illness" despite the fact that we know, and they know, that the majority of the show's audience occurs due to a victorian-esque freak-show titillation and fascination with the subject matter - hence the extraordinarily blunt title. I'm usually quite sceptical of shows or companies that utilise something incredibly exploitative but lucrative whilst proclaiming selfless empathy and concern; usually they have ulterior motives.
On the subject of what themes the episode conveys: It seems to me that this episode explores the philosophical notion of Essentialism, i.e. what, at its core, makes a thing what it is? The story of The Ship of Theseus explains the concept well wherein a ship from ancient times gradually degrades via years of battle and many adventures, and is subsequently repaired along the way. Eventually the ship becomes a legend and is displayed for all to see in a museum. However, by this time, the ship that began its first voyage is utterly different from the one that has become a legend; every single part of the ship has been replaced through the years. In other words, where is the Ship of Theseus, what is the significance of the ship in the museum (if any), and what are the museum-goers aiming their praise at? This relates to Ash and how Martha deals with the biotic doppelganger. She becomes frustrated that despite looking exactly like him, sounding exactly like him, speaking exactly like him, even expressing some thoughts exactly like him, there was some vague, nebulous essence of 'Ash-ness' that simply wasn't there. Even if Ash-bot PERFECTLY mimicked real Ash, the knowledge that he "isn't HIM" is enough to dismiss Ash-bot's existence. This begs the question, what exactly do we want? It's kinda like being given an autograph of your favourite actor or musician and then finding out that it's just a perfect replica - even though both would just be squiggles on paper. It's kinda like some form of irrational sentimentality or attachment (And I don't mean that derogatorily; it's a harmless form of it, and it can be extremely sweet and symbolic e.g. keeping a trinket of a loved one's and not feeling the same towards the same trinket you found in a shop that wasn't owned by them). It's also an idea that is hinted at in White Bear, in the sense that the woman who filmed the murder of that little girl doesn't really exist anymore since she's had her memories wiped constantly. That aspect of her personality is literally gone, meaning the blood-thirsty, "justice" mob are merely punishing - and directing their anger at - some sentient being who happens to have the fleshy appearance, DNA, and name of the criminal they so hate.
PS: I'm so glad you mentioned 'Her'. (And sorry, again, for the essay).
Don't worry I really appreciate it man, I'll give a proper response to your comments when I have the time to read through them all!
This comment was very impressive. I agree with all the points that you made. Great job!
MeanMisterWalrus Brilliantly written. Great cross references. If only more RUclips commentators where like you, XD!
MeanMisterWalrus there was a mitchell and webb look sketch mocking these kind of documentaries called 'the boy with a bottom for a face.' I would recommend you check it out
This comment was worded perfectly and I agree with that was said.
Do the other episodes aswell pls! I dont have anybody to talk with about this series so I really enjoy those videos *_*
Yanino Dja I definitely will at some point, don't you worry! I didn't have anybody to discuss it with bar my partner but now it's on Netflix and loads of my mates now watch it too!
Awesome! You have now gained one subscriber! ;D
PLEASE go through all episodes!!
So what will happen when she meets somebody else and gets remarried? He probably wouldn't be happy living there with a robot version of her late husband in the attic.
She probably wont get remarried. She never let go of Ash, thats why she still kept him in the attic. She'd rather have an empty, artificial shell of Ash than none of him.
Also she doesn't live in this house anymore. She visits once a week with her daughter
The situation with the secret wife in Jane Eyre comes to mind.
She go either leave that nigga up there when she move or sell him to Salvation Army. Either way he aint making it to the U-Haul truck
Conway79 any normal husband go be like look bitch, you got two choices...
I'm still wondering if I'm not currently staring in my own episode.
Went to out local 80's style corner shop / hardware store the other day - the kind of place that only serves things made before the digital age. I bought 2 fabric dyes - paid in cash and went home.
Within 5 minutes of walking through the door an advert popped up on RUclips advertising the very same (hardly ever seen these days) fabric dye. I've never seen this product advertised since I was a small child many years ago. Then 4 different adverts came on the TV - all of them life insurance ads. The first included a man called Steven, the second did and also the third - what bothered me is that the 4th included a person called Steven, his mother in the advert had passed away a number of years earlier but without life insurance (just like my mother had) what really stood out is that the mother in the story also had the same name as mine did.
This keeps happening,
I'm starting to think that TV adverts are being individually tailored to include names used within your household and are altered depending on who's around and what their devices are telling the smart TV.
It wouldn't surprise me.
Another fab review - keep them coming and hopefully I'll see you next one soon.
This is super creepy, does it continue?
tomonkeyfrench8 my weird life - I've kept away from the TV since. I've also noticed that when I'm watching a video or TV show, I'm always able to guess whatever number the people on the show are about to say.
For example, if it's an interview and someone is going to mention a number of things they've got/bought/owned etc - I say the number out loud and it very often is exactly what I've just said.
I'm getting paranoid lol
You could be a mutant yknow
tomonkeyfrench8 oh I certainly am - it's what sets us apart from the humans and their unnatural ways.
Look out for the men in the suits that will come knocking at your door though.
Every show always displays some form of sex. That means something yeah, people are not only attached to the screen but also how we want sex to be.
I might have missed it, but I don't think White Bear has that.
white bear, nosedive and hated in the nation don´t have any sex
Transminati Are those all the episodes without it, because I'd like to watch some episodes with friends and I don't want any awkward moments.
Jared Davis If your friends get awkward around sex I'm thinking you're too young to watch it lol
leeroy ! Well, technically Nosedive had that scene where the guy was watching porn on his phone.
1:51 "i'm not entirely convinced it's possible to have a social media addiction..." bahaha good one
Is it wroing that I kinda felt something for the main character, I just feel so sorry for her, and its heartbreaking.
Rafael Rubio Wrong? It's the point feeling sorry for her.
True. Probably why I think it's the most depressing episode from the show so far
Why would it be wrong? What a strange thing to say
Rafael Rubio do you mean.......because it’s not real? As in actors and script writers?
Attaching the emotions stirred to the actor?
Yes. You're a terrible person for having an emotional reaction to what you see on TV.
I lost her at the robot in the bathtub scene. At than moment I realized Lady's gone insane . I know grief is hard but at that moment I think she went from normal mourner to detached from reality. And why the hell did she keep it and let her kid talk to it regularly. Does the kid even know her dad is dead? Ugh this makes my brain hurt. I'm glad I watched San Junipero afterwards I needed a happy story.
Jeff Sol gross.
L. T C. From watching, I think the daughter is aware that her dad is dead. The daughter said, “Hey, Ash!” Instead of “Dad”. This is further supported when she called the main protagonist “Mom” instead of her name.
Because she’s a reflection of Ash’s mom who put his brother’s photos in the attic because she couldn’t deal with seeing them.
She can’t get rid of him and letting him die would feel like watching her husband die again
This whole episode was so depressing and I felt sorry for her . She was losing touch with reality as the episode progressed.
Out of all the episodes, this is the one that fucks with me the most. You don't truly realise all of the unique facets of a person until they're gone and you're forced to rebuild them from your memory.
Martha got so caught up trying to preserve her husband that she ended being blinded. No matter how hard she tried, the phone calls, the messenging, the clone, it was never going to be 100% Ash. I think this episode really depicts how hard we try to hold on to things, or people I should say. Its hard to accept that they're gone.
I believe the first step in coping with grief is acceptance. The more we try to fight it the harder it will be to let go. Being in denial will do nothing but make us even more depressed. We should realize when we let go, we're not letting go of the memories or the person, but letting go of the hurt and pain.
In the end I don't think Martha ever truly let go of her grief over Ash. She still kept the clone of him. Although it was supposed to be as if he were a memory, similarly to the pictures, he still was a relevant part of her.(I refer to the clone as 'he' but really its an 'it '. Its not a true person. But the clone is so life like that its so hard to distinguish. Which is why people in grief are ready to jump and get one, not realizing they cant replace what they loss.) But She even reluctantly went up in the attic with her daughter. She never truly let go.
Also, don't know if anyone else had this experience. But, lately ill be talking about something, then either a couple of hours or days later, Facebook advertises the stuff I was talking about even though I never looked it up online or anything. I'm pretty sure its listening.
Yes it is, i had deleted my facebook and remade a fake one just to follow some groups and when i met up with a family member it suggested them as friends later on. I had location off, and had not opened the app whatsoever. My only social media now is yt under a random account to throw anyone off.
See yall finding out too late i believe its to da point once u got a account even if u delete n make a new fake one they still got yo ass.
Yes its the Ai...you dont even need to say anything. Just think it in your mind and stuff pops up left n right. Yahoo does it too. Smh
The part of this episode when she tell robot ash to jump made me cry... a lot
I feel like part of the reason that Ash doesn't work, in addition to what you mentioned, is explored more in the episode Nosedive. Ash, like most people, might have been uninclined to post things to his social media (which is where they say they gained information about him) that was negative, angry, or dark. This is why the robot was incapable of expressing these types of attitudes and when she would get angry would try to process it with either "I'll do whatever you say" or "would having sex make this better?"
As exhaustive as the face we present to social networking may be, there are always parts of ourselves we don't show. In nosedive this was because it would get your a low rating, but anyone addicted to social media might realize that sharing these kinds of things would cause people to either not interact with you at all, or increase negative interactions.
I thought the discussion of profiting from emotions was interesting since I went through something similar recently. I lost my cat that my family adopted when I was very little.
I was and still am very broken up about it and shortly after she died I went to buy an urn for her ashes. Since the sites I looked at used cookies ads for urns showed up all over my internet. Even now a couple weeks later they show up and it feels like a punch in the gut every time I see them since I wanted something for closure and to help my grief and it's being used against me.
I think the end of the episode takes that situation to the extreme like black mirror is so good at doing.
This episode was great reminded me of the main idea of Ghost in the Shell. Since Robo Ash is a legit "ghost" in the shell.
I read a book, "Goodbye for now", a couple of years ago that had this exact technology, but instead the protagonist was the one developing the software. They created a studio where people could come, sit down and talk to the AI version of their dead ones. It sprung to mind when I saw this episode. It was nice seeing some sort of "adaption" of it, even if it isn't related to the book. It's eerily similar though, can't believe there haven't been any copyright issue.
It's like sci-fi "PS I love you".
I think I was confused on one thing. When she was on the phone wish ash and it started to cut off he said “don’t turn on the bathroom light” and she didn’t hear, implying it was foreshadowing about something with the light later but nope
I think it meant that if the bathroom light would be on, it would look like a murder scene in the eyes of anyone who can look into the bathroom window.
Maybe it was there just to explain why the bathroom was dark.
Was anyone else spooked when he was uploading in the bathtub? I was scared he was gonna be creepier. He was creepy just not in the way I was concerned about.
I think maybe it was that creepy "One person hide and seek" game/ challenge thing people were doing awhile back.
Artificial Ash is a representation of our happy memories with someone who we truly love. And when that person is gone, those memories become very painful but we still hold on to them even if we don’t want to - because the pain reminds us that what we’ve had with that person was real.
"I don't believe I have a social media addiction"
*Leaves links to various social media accounts in description*
It's almost like that gets more people to find his videos
Ur an overrated sandwhich influence by social media to be overrated
"I can shut down my social media at anytime." Yes famous last words of all addicts. 😉
This episode broke my heart I felt so sad for Martha
Very comprehensive analysis, I like the fact that you used "How Deep is Your Love" as the sound track at 8:00 - love the clever references everywhere
You didnt catch/point out the fake smile thingy where she asks whether or not that matters if it stays unoticed. (or did i miss it?)
Great video btw !!
Which scene was that?
"Interaction that is not on social media" -> Worry not, our devices listen to us everyday, so all interactions are recorded. My Google Home Mini lit up every hour ...
Damn texting n driving!
I agree with all points made in this video and the comments I got to read as well. But I couldn't help to think that this also connects to the dangers of "Texting & Driving" in modern society.
The fact that he was always on his phone and she'd be the only one whom he'd put the phone down for, kinda makes me think of his "I'll have to drive there alone, Pick it up alone, and drive back... alone" kinda of like a warning to her as to what might happen since she wouldn't be there to stop him from using his phone while driving.
In a way, I feel like this episode shows what the consequences of texting and driving could be, and the painful and heartbreaking situations may result because of it. I may also be way over my head with this one, but like I said, couldn't help to think that was at least an idea when producing this episode.
did anyone notice the symbolism of the daughter saying "im just using you to get an extra slice" almost how her mother used him to get an extra experience of ash.
If I were in her position, I would happily accept the replacement.
thats...dark...
spidaminida A little late but you missed the whole point of this.
The sex part.. LOL
Meh...why not.
It's cool Iwas just clarifying that thats what you meant.. I was thinking damn if those become real then Im out of a job.. LOL
This episode made me emotional after losing my brother. I think I'd go as far as the phone calls, MAYBE but definitely not the bot.
There actually are applications designed to bring the dead back via social media activity now. Their is also a new show on iTUnes called Life After that deals with similar themes.
Jem Boy fuck that. They playing to much now
Jem Boy bro this shit is all in revelations u scaring the shit outta me
That's depressing.
I took this episode as social medias effect on loss. He mentioned his mum put his dead brothers pictures in the loft, not able to let go but also couldnt bare to see him. With social media, being a permenant record of the deceased, it is so much harder to move on. Hence the ending where he is in the loft. She can't let go, but she can't bare to see him. A mocking of modern day social media playing those in mourning, unable to let go due to being surrounded by the memories of the dead.
For the online cookies, I think of it something like when you update you phone, tablet, computer, ect. When you first sign up your give pages of things you agree to but a majority of people just scroll down to hit agree.
This episode was heartbreaking.
The ending gave me the feels. :'(
Excellent analysis of the episode. It's funny that you mention the Alan Turing of the Turing Test as it would later be referenced heavily in the film Ex Machina which also happens to star Domhnall Gleeson as the protagonist, Caleb. However, the roles are reversed in Ex Machina whereby the artificial intelligence being is a girl Ava, played by Alicia Vikander.
On a broader note, the constant consumption of information via search engines, virtual shopping, social media and streaming sites feed into what has become know in the trade as data mining. Basically, as a result of being bombarded and consequently drawn into these information streams, the beast that is the Internet is able to build up a pretty accurate picture of our interests and hobbies. So, when we see an advert for a product, service or movie very similar to something we already read, bought or consumed through these channels (almost like it's been tailored towards us), we have been "scroogled" :D.
Ex Machina is one of my favourite movies man, good spot. Very similar themes explored as well, plus individual(s) being stuck in one location out of reach from the rest of the world and trapped with a humanoid robot. Fantastic comment on data mining too. That particular phrase is what I should have researched instead, but I guess the gist is the same haha
Just subscribed to your channel and am enjoying your reviews. Love how you have "If I can't have you" playing in the background. Great job
Your analyses on the Black Mirror series are very insightful.
I completely agree with the business of praying on the grieving. I felt that was one of the biggest themes and didn’t realise it until he said “I have something that might help but it’s not cheap” it’s exactly the same thing people have to put up with when buying a coffin, organising a funeral and so on, the constant idea of “its what they would have wanted” that keeps people who are already emotionally vulnerable to think the best way to honour their loved one is to spend a lot of money on it. The consumer believes this and pays so much money for a box that will end up being burnt or buried anyway so there was really no difference in the actual event than there would have been with a cheaper version. This episode takes it to a new level where the woman at the beginning takes away Hayley Atwell’s chance to grieve and presses on her emotions to buy more and more to keep in touch with Domnhall Gleesons character.
This reminds me of Leo's obsession with his dead wife in the movie Inception. How he had to let her go (the memory of her) in order to move forward in life
I also noticed how Ash talked about how his mom put the photos of his father and brother in the attic after their passing. I’m pretty sure Martha put Ash’s photos in the attic after he died as well.
Mate great video, not just the info but the way you structured it is amazing for a smaller account
I love how in the background plays, "If I Cant Have You, I Dont Want Nobody" perfect for this episode
One interesting thing I thought about was how robotic the daughter acted, even if they only see Ash from time to time, there is still some impact from the more technology based future she is born into. The old rustic cottage has been essentially updated by Martha (new furniture, paint etc) and the old way of storing memories using pictures has been updated to robots with the social media presence we have left behind.
This was one of the more creepy episodes to me, as I have heard of ai's that essentially continue to share things on social media (mainly Facebook) after someone has died, based off of what they would normally post. Just the idea of this episode feels much more grounded in reality than the previous episodes.
Another element that arguably was missed is that Martha could represent the "anti-technology" side of this story, and could draw parallels to Brooker in that he is also in a sense "anti-technology". By this I mean that those who refrain from being the early adopters of a certain technological trend, they are continually nagged and bothered about it, until they give into submission. When Martha constantly denies the requests of the blonde woman at the funeral (I forgot her name if she was even named) , she is overpowered. This is seen in many today; by not using Facebook for example, you will be seen as an outcast, and social pressures would eventually coerce you (if you haven't already) into making an account.

Five years later, I will say, yes, it is very very realistic to have a social media addiction (or just phone addiction)
I'm amazed at how much more you can see and perceive in all these episodes. I wish I had such depth of perception.
I imediatly thought abou the robot boy in A. I. by Spielberg where the boy was ordered in order to replace the parents dead kid. In that film the robot, so to speak, is much more CREATIVE than in this one - as HAL 2001 and 'She" -, that is, big data and algorithms till now can not create a creative machine but there is a fear in the air if that could ever be possible. Im not an specialist so I won't go further in that analysis . In this episode the robot is much more limited than HAL and Spielerg's although is brilliant trying to predict our not so far future. Congratulations man !!!
dionisio454 awe yea how.. see man you thinking bro how did i not even think of that. this is exactly that.
Dunno if anyone else commented on the characters name but also creepy ( or a nod) that ASH was same name as the robot in "ALIEN"
I think this relates to social media as a whole, the fact the social media is merely a glimpse of who you are, but not the whole you.
The robot and the real Ash had about the same amount of personality anyways..
how deep is your love in the background! ;)
Personally I love the idea of AI companions. I loved this episode but I felt it was only scratching the surface. What about an episode with someone who gets a robot that isn't made to look like another person? That person accepting them but what about those around them? Friends? Family? Coworkers?
BRILLIANT analysis.
This is the best episode of television ever made.
Great video. I got that same feeling of isolation during the cliff scene and also had the same association with "her". I guess that feeling of isolation was pretty on point. all and all a great episode and a really interesting show!
It's interesting that Domnhall Gleeson plays a robot trying to be human in this episode, and in Ex Machina he is interacting with a robot that also tries to be human
This episode also makes me think of psychological “introjects”. Or the monologue of people you know, but inside your head. You’re imagining yourself talking to a person inside your head.
Brilliant analysis! I only discovered your channel a couple of days ago and am really enjoying your videos!
She shoves his clone in the attic because it reminds her of the real him.. and thts what he said tht his mother used to do to pictures of his father and brothers memorobilia when they died.
Edit...nvm mentioned qt the end of video😂
you deserve more subs than people like leafy
Cosxiel hes irrelevant now
HISSSSSSS
what the fuck
This episode reminded me heavily of Tarkovsky's "Solaris". The planet constructed avatars, based on other people's memories of them, hence they were incomplete representations of the real thing.
"I can stop when I want to, but I don't because...."
Is the most common statement addicts make, you really don't know how insidious addiction is. Our survival is guided by addiction. Not negative addiction, but that statement points to something deep.
I can disconnect for days, if someone needs help, they can call police or ambulance. Or just someone else. [I GIVE AND OFFER HELP TO PEOPLE, THIS ISN'T MEANT TO AVOID THAT]
Closest to this technology is the free snap chat bot that's just been added
"she offers that he eat his soup out of a shoe to which he unwillingly agrees to" nope, he doesn't unwillingly agree, he agrees inadvertently, she's checking whether he's listening to her at all
The film (or episode) was more important to me as a sideways illustration for how we distance ourselves from great loss and memory, and the guilt we confront when we do so... out of necessity, or whatever. She buried Ash in the attic. Others just appoint a graveyard. Of course, it raises many other questions about tech and such simultaneously, which is why it is good filmmaking. It reminds me of "Don't Look Now" and how it hung its concerns about grief and forgiveness (and synchronicity) on a gothic tale about precognition and spirit counsel. Will definitely seek out more episodes. Most good sci fi is a clotheshanger for moral and psychological concerns.
i never understood why she kept it after all
She couldn't kill it because when he started to beg it became too realistic - too much like a living being, too much like Ash. She just couldn't kill something that looked and felt so much like Ash begging for his life.
It's also possibly to show that such a constant and realistic reminder of Ash won't let her overcome her grief and move on.
sara totta She never got over Ash
I honestly just love Domhnall Gleeson
With this artificial body and cookie technology you could have create immortal humans.
I almost identified with the fear of being away from technology the way that Martha did when she broke the phone. When I dropped my phone off a 30 ft cliff it somehow didn't break, but I thought it had, and i cried because I have a lot of friends a state away from when i moved. I think this episode was one of the most present time
