Surely uninsured drivers get away with it because they can use (illegal) cloned number plates. If ANPR cameras are everywhere, surely there'd be no uninsured cars left on the road - noting that such cars have to be found first, and I'd put good money on it not being a priority with Plod. Now if they had put up 'mean words' via stickers in their car windows, then that would be another matter... :-)
Having seen the programme ( police interceptors ) the thieves and the unsured drivers dont give a dam, 3rd and 4th offence. It's the blooming courts not giving a proper deterrent.
Very true
I saw one where thieves stole a top of the range Audi off someone's drive. Drove through a town like maniacs. Police caught them. They were fined £50 each.
The fines always seem to be much less than the cost of insurance and that's if the person is even caught.
UK roads are a national disgrace pure and simple 😡
Yes 👍
Regarding potholes, the law insists I have my car MOT kept up to date to ensure it is roadworthy. Why can't the laws of the land insist councils make sure their roads are roadworthy and if not prosecute them? 🤔
Great point
Well said sir. I get a fine/ points loose my license if my tyres are not road worthy,
Yet the road they contact with can be in any condition.
The VED goes to the government which does not give the councils enough money to look after the roads. So they have to decide to either push council tax through the roof to fix the roads, or deal with potholes while they can (Most councils consider it cheaper to pay compensation and patch the pothole only when people claim damages).
We were involved in an incident with a uninsured driver a few years ago when she pulled out from a junction On to a 40 mph road and I just couldn’t stop in time both cars were drivable so after exchanging details we went home had phone my insurance company only to be told she had no insurance we phoned the police who did not now want to no my insurance company was taking her to court to claim the money back for my repairs the answer is to call the police at at the time of the accident
I guess your insurers had to take it on the chin.
So sorry. Could u explain the situation more easily for me I don't get it about the no insurance part. New to this
Buy insurance, that’s it. Don’t consider driving without it.
I've always said we should have a cheap basic gov-backed motor insurance paid for in part by massive fines / benefit clawback for uninsured / drink drive / drug drive etc.
So many times the punishments for driving offences seem negligible.
Yep 👍👍
Nowadays our pot holes have some road!
😂
Great news video. Self driving cars are a worry at the start but in 20 years time they will be the cheapest to insure. I wonder if there will be a different type of driving license with these?
Yes, great point Richard.
Great news round-up. You are right about the EV3, the standard range is 58kWh and the long range is 81kWh, so won't be the entry price.
👍your video is coming tomorrow by the way 👍
Love these Sunday morning updates I don’t miss anything by watching these cheers Jim!
Thanks 👍
Sorry none of this points nonsense for uninsured drivers - immediate 2 year ban and then a retest. Second offence 5 year ban.
Some of these people best start downloading their local bus timetable.
👍
A Chinese manufacturer supplying red London double deckers? very sad times for British manufacturing. Tories.. take a bow.
Is the London Mayor a Tory? Seriously though, I have zero faith any any politician to serve anyone other than themselves. The system is broken. One says it's white, therefore the other has to say it's black - it wouldn't be accepted in a primary school but is fine in parliment.
Deindustrialising Europe is in full swing. In a few decades we will be back to pre industrial-revolution era.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Khan isn't a tory but he is very cash strapped. it was Boris who commisisoned the NI built hybrids (at around £1m each if i recall) that have all since broken down into basically full diesel-electrics. My point was more that our UK manufacturing base can't supply good value reliable buses due to chronic underinvestment and training. not just last 14 years to be fair, waaaay back.
An ex policeman told me a few years ago that they can do an enhanced number plate check for these ghost plates and may pass the £200 cost onto the driver along with with fine/points!
Oops!! :)
What's the ghost plates?
I heard thats the reason WRC Rally GB was cancelled, they said the roads were too rough even for rally cars.
😂👍
The main reason the roads can’t cope is the population size of the country. If you take out the islands like San Marino, Monaco Gibraltar etc. the Uk has the 4th largest population in Europe per capita (239).If you just look at England (438)separately it’s second only after the European part of Turkey which is the most populated region in Turkey. Crazy numbers.
Yep
Cheers Jimbo speaking of the M3 have you seen all the roadworks between jct 2 and 4a 50 mph average speed both sides of the road an absolute joke it took me 2.5 hours to get from Twickenham to poole usual screw the motorist ideology thanks again 👍
Yes mate, utter disaster. I love those signs on the M1 at the moment "you can't see us as we work at night" after you've just sat in a 45 minute tailback due to the lane closure at mid-day😂
Excellent vid as usual
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video as always !
Thanks again!
JLR is such an utter joke... Selling new Range Rover with no oil in the differential.... That isn't just basic quality control. It is an utter embarrassment to the name of this country.
It is
The Kia EV3 - apparently there’s going to be two battery sizes. The smaller, shorter range will be FWD 58.3kWh useable, with probable real world summer range of 180-200mi.
And a larger battery AWD with 78kWh useable, with a probable real world summer range of probably less range, as the dual motor is being built for a quicker 0-60, rather than efficiency.
Yes
I wonder if totally autonomous cars will restrict our movement because they won't allow us to go places the authorities say are out of bounds. Gosh I'm sounding like a conspiracy theorist. Traffic will get worse and worse in the south east, so many flats being built in my area but no roads and public transport ridiculously inconvenient to use and impossible at times
You are but you might be correct
Another good one, Jim!
Cheers.
I look forward to your used EV video, especially in terms of how much longer the downward trend is likely to last with their prices.
I think the big hit will continue to happen in years 1-3 and then it stabilises
A number of Hybrid cars even with small engines cannot be insured by new young drivers. This has happened to a neighbour's daughter and I thought this was strange given the continuing presssure by our(and other) Governments for us all to gl electric. My brother in law owns a three year old Toyota Auris Hybrid which seems to be a very sensible vehicle for consideration. However , he recently had to replace the car's main driving battery ,outside of warranty, for £3,000 .This may be one of the reasons insurance premiums are climbing so rapidly.Even the most basic electric vehicles are fast on acceleration and are constructed with expensive batteries and this does not bode well for future insurance costs.Who will insure our new younger drivers?
Auris is a decent sized car for a new driver, I don’t think it being a hybrid made a difference. Or the cost of its battery. Check the insurance group. Young drivers need cars like Citroen C1, VW Up, Toyota Aygo etc.
I think the EV3 looks mint (pun intended) defo would be interested in this as a replacement for the Model Y
It does look good, I'm just interested to see where the pricing goes
Top man 👍
Thanks for the visit
The old guy, when he reaches 89, tell him to buy a self driving Tesla, then we can all be safe!
😂👍
I've got an A4 and my wife an old A3 and we both love them. Like you Jim, they've not missed a beat and we've had the A3 for 14 years.
£47k for an S3 that with a couple options will be £50k + Just madness!
👍👍
Hopefully things will get better after the tories are gone
I’d be amazed if they were. It doesn’t matter who plays, the game itself is broken.
Let's be honest whoever wins (assuming the tories lose) will spend 90% 0f there first term blaming the last goverment for all the problems) then promise us ,if we give them a second term to sort out all kinds of things.
👍
👍
That 2035 date will get push back
Maybe but there probably won’t be many cars available as a lot of OEMs are on track for the original 2030.
Great video. The young and uninsured - I can understand this. It is a big problem. The government need to do something??? UK vehicle insurance is different to many countries thorugh the world where the driver is insured, not the vehicle. We in the UK have the wrong method of how insurance is performed. Price of fuel. Most is tax so again another government problem. I could go on about this for weeks 😆
Government would need to subsidise it and there needs to be a complete ban on claims management firms or a ban on putting margin on hire car costs for claims.
I'd like an EV but I am concerned that many of the 100 models available might end up being very expensive to insure and service, even if cheap to buy. The lack of public charging points (working ones), the charging time compared to filling up with petrol and the higher cost for charging puts me off EV purchase and ownership. The governments decision to charge VED on electric cars seems to be completely against their climate change policies. Even if the EV is discounted or second hand, if the original list price was over £40k, which many were, then your annual VED could be £600, every year and that might go up year on year. Motoring, especially EV's is becoming the recreation activity of the rich.
👌
Ever since my wife pass her test (15 years ago) I have learnt that to buy the insurance NOT choose a car. By that I mean ... randomly choosing many models and getting hundreds of quotes. Then armed with the quotes, choose the car. As an example, after passing her test a Mitsubishi Pajero was £740 a Renault Megane Convertible was £2,650.... So she had a Pajero....
👍
Back to the 70’s it would seem…. Everyone complaining on cheaper imports killing our manufacturing… Japanese cars that ran without issues , took over surprise surprise . So here we go again …..
👌
No way the EV3 goes for £30k. As you said Jim it's a wait and see. Will likely be in the early 40s insurance groups and manufacturers look at the UK market and competitors to set their prices. The UK is a target for the higher end of pricing, I believe BYD quoted prices for models that did not reach the UK.
The BYD reason was due to import duties, tariffs and VAT to be fair. European manufacturer lobbies have played their part I feel.
I don't want self driving cars, at least not until the tech is much better. The best self driving systems are still much less good at making correct assessments of the situation and quick planning ahead that a good human does all the time almost subconsciously. Computers tend to react late and not smoothly, they do not anticipate as well as humans. I can see a place for them on set routes in their own driverless lanes but that won't be possible here in the UK, not enough space!
👌 interesting take
As a set of tyres for a Bugatti costs £43,000.... do you think owners care about a tank of fuel?
They would if there were no longer fuel available I’m sure??
my garage is charging £1.40 per litre for both... we're being ripped off
👍
Insurance was very high when i was in my teens back in the late 70`s, it`s not changed i had to grin and bear it. It cost me over 2 month wages for a year insurance it`s the same now so what`s all the fuss about.
👍
Re autonomous driving, I find it more stresful to supervise autopilot on my car than drive it myself. For me it would be level 5 or nothing.
👍
👍👍👍 COME ON PEOPLE SUBSCRIBE👌. Thanks Jim
Do as he says, he's a very clever man. ⬆
all roads will have to be modified so that the car can recognise verges lanes and junctions. Also, the traffic lights will have to tell the car when to stop or go.
The tech has been able to deal with both those things for some time 👍
EV3 text on screen clearly states that the cheaper "cr*p" battery version has a 254 mile range.
Get yourself a biscuit 👍
In regards of self driving the stats are saying it is already 8 times safer than humans, I think it’s just a matter of time before the choice is taken from us imagine trying to get insurance
👌
Wherever I go , the roads are so broken they are becoming useless , maybe they are trying to stop cars on our roads
👍
So great news
👍👍
Thanks jim
👍👍
BMW Skytop.yes please.
I tell you what Jase, that looks very special. I'll hopefully be able to afford a 20 year old one at some stage, probably when I'm dead.

👍👍👍
Jim would you not say that the removal of the EV grant by government, along with EVs being liable to road tax and congestion charging as of 2025. I know this has put me off
Not really to be honest as you can now get a used EV with really good range etc for under £15k (video coming on Thursday) so I don;t think knocking a couple of grand off the price of a new one is a big deal. Congestion charging for EVs (the charge was supoosed to be to improve air quality) seems like a total money grab though.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Congestion charge is about reducing the amount of vehicles on the road. ULEZ is about lowering pollution. An EV can still cause congestion. It's when EV's get charged to enter LEZ's that's when you know it's just a money grab.
So if you don't buy an EV, you're still going to be left with a vehicle with high RFL and congestion charge. Add to that LEZ charges also.
😊

£1.41 per litre in Dingwall

My father in law still drives he is 97. I kid you not. It is about time that you cannot just sign a form to get your licence renewed without any test.
Wow 😮
👍👍👍
