I’m 8b also in Canada and mine just sprouted but I’m not growing mine to cut them mainly just for the long blooms for the garden and the seeds, this is my first year so I’m experimenting also. I’m still planning on keeping mine indoors for 2-4weeks..I planted them in 1 gallon pots…so it will be interesting to see if I can get them to transplant fine. I’m growing mammoth and a velvet queen. I’ll be following along.
Oh you'll have so much fun with them! I will be planting some mammoth and another type just to have around the garden and chicken yard. The mammoths are sooo fun to grow and harvest! I will make a video of those too. Have fun and thanks for joining along!
What? In your zone, why not just plant them directly in the ground? I am in IOWA zone 4.5 and plant them directly and they do just fine in my shorter season. Also, they seed them selves from the previous year. Seems like you may just enjoy extra work, but from my 65+ years, Sunflowers do BEST when not suffering/shocked by transplants. They sprout so fast, as you point out, just plant them direct here! I have even planted seed in the fall for spring sprouts - DIRECTLY in the ground
I prepared a large bed along a 6 foot tall wire fence, I think I will have at least 6 hours full sun. I buried a soaker hose in the little gully , added aged horse manure, tons of sandy soil and laid hay all around the perimeter of this bed. I planted at least 7 varieties. Fingers crossed 🤞 I really want to grow sunflowers for my rabbits and the pollinators. I planted directly in the ground almost an inch deep.
I'll make another sunflower video. I do plant my other sunflower seeds straight in the ground, but for people who want to get an early start, it is possible to start indoors (especially with the Pro Cuts) then move outside and keep warm with agribon, low tunnels, and green houses. I know a lot of flower farmers do this, so I wanted to experiment with the process.
