This song is a time machine. I'm transported back to those days every time I hear it. Summers nights at the drive in or just cruising and hanging out back in the late 70's early 80's. Youth truly is wasted on the young.
This song makes me cry every-time I listen to it. That moment when the music drops away and he reflects on the distant thunder is so poignant, poetic, beautiful, and relatable to the human experience, absolute perfection. What a brilliant artist
It sounded to me like an aging man with responsibilities wistfully remembering his youth, innocence, and lack of responsibilities in the middle of a dark night while a thunderstorm closed in. In reality, Bob based this on his own experience just after high school. He had a '62 Chevy, though, not a '60. His girlfriend's Real Boyfriend was in the military, and they married when he got back, leaving Bob heartbroken. The song was recorded at, among other places, Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama where, I think, Southern Rock was born. Southern Rock is its own genre and sounds Nothing like country. Good reaction video. Thanks!
@@mikewilliams1559 Might as well throw funk, soul, bluegrass, ragtime, folk, and jazz in there, while we're at it -- Anything with a southern accent to it. She was the love of his life, I felt the lighting, but I waited on the thunder, I woke last night to the sound of thunder... he realized later in life that she was the one.
Bob Seger is the King of making the listener reminisce. So many of his song lyrics are about coming of age and could have been written about my teenage years. I'm 52 now and whenever I'm feeling melancholy about days gone past I just throw on some Seger. I suggest Fire Down Below as your next Seger song. It's one of my favorites.

Just wait till your in your 60s! Actually, you won't have to wait long, because the years really start flying by fast between your 40s and your 60s! Compared to eternity, our mortal lives here on this planet are just the blink of an eye! So, get right with your Heavenly Father thru His Son Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay for the sins of all mankind... past, present and future. All you have to do is have faith and believe that Christ did this and then was resurrected from the dead by God the Father so that we can have the gift of everlasting life in paradise. There is nothing we can do to earn salvation... It is a gift of grace alone, thru faith alone in Christ alone. It's all very simple... and it can all be yours if only you have faith and believe. You may feel that my post is inappropriate here, but I truly believe that there is a reason I found your comment tonight. Read the gospel of John in the Bible. Jesus will speak to you.
“Against The Wind” is a good choice as mentioned, but I’ve always really liked “Roll Me Away”. However, if you’re gonna do Bob Seger you’ve got to do “Old Time Rock and Roll”. It’s a law.
The problem with doing Old Time Rock n Roll is that the whole premise of the song is returning to rock of the old days... but this young man is not familiar with a lot of songs apparently, so would he know what it means? So instead, TURN THE PAGE!
Phenomenal album I still play often today. I'm 54 and raising my 16 yr old son on Seger. It's working. He loves him. We've seen him live together twice before all this Covid crap.
Ah the old 8 track. Fade out on track two and fade back in on track three. I'm remembering me, a beer snuck out of the crisper and the Guess Who's greatest hits.
He is one of my all time favorite artists. Been a fan since 70s and have seen him live multiple times. He is as special live as on vinyl! So happy he touches you!!
This is exactly correct. Country was a totally different animal in 1976. By the late 80s this became the sound of mid tempo country songs. I know cause I engineered a million songs in Nashville then that sounded like this and Against the Wind and Mainstreet etc etc... People that grew up on 70s Seger, Petty, Springsteen and southern rock in general mutated it into the country of the late 80s and the 90s. Watered down of course by the Nashville system.
@@BlackiePawless I just checked the country single chart for 76. C. W. McCall “Convoy” !?! Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charley Pride, Ronnie Milsap, Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash. Quite a bit different sound. But I guess music has always been a bunch of winding roads. Crossing and recrossing. One generation learning from the preceding but changing everything for the next. Was there anyone I’d know from the radio, you ran into, who was especially nice or otherwise remarkable?

I remember, I remember workin’ on my night moves to this very song. Aspiring to at any rate. Brings back many other memories too. I think his is my favorite among many great Bob Seeger songs.
Bob Seger is an extraordinary storyteller through his music. Seger actually had a 1962 Chevy Biscayne, but in the song, he went with '60 Chevy because it rolled better with the music. Check out "Main Street", and to answer your question, this is Rock-n-Roll.
Bob Seger from Detroit Michigan. All the people in Michigan and in the mid west love him. He toured for 25 years before he hit it big. He is Greta watching concert.
I kind of feel sorry for today's generation. They will never really know what this song is about due to all the fears laid on them today. I don't mean they don't get their freak on, but the when and where are totally different. They will never really know the experience of foggin up the windows in the backrow of a drive in movie. Getting the glance from a certain sweet young thing then skippin class to give it a go on the pine needles in the woods. The thrill of wandering away from the bonfire at a party to risk gettin caught gettin it on in the sand on the beach. Ah, memories of a well miss-spent youth.
In 1976 I was 17 years old when this album and Live Silver Bullet came out. Both albums went double platinum at the same time. He's in the songwriters hall of fame and rockin roll hall of fame. I've seen him in concert 6 times in my life. He is a great American artist and he was one of my heroes. Main Street is a song I would love for you to react to.
I get you man. To my mind, _Live Bullet_ is one of the 10 best live albums ever recorded. It, together with Sam Cooke's live and the Who's Live at Leeds, are my personal favorites, especially the blending of Travellin' Man / Beautiful Loser. Bullet is just a wonderful live album. I just thought about it, it seems like the best live albums out there are from the 70's. Maybe it's because, before that, live sound recording wasn't great, and modernly the singers do so much studio processing that doing it live is hard. I don't know
Classic rock but with a a kind is country cross-over vibe. Country music back then didn’t sound anything like this, but looking back you can feel that “country” sound in his voice. The Eagles also had that cross-genre fusion of rock and country in their early career for sure.
