yea i know im 11 months late but your logic is so wrong. this guy didn't explain anything he just told you what to do. i guarantee your teacher explains between the lines like HOW and WHY it's better and HOW it achieves it, the processes and what not. but you're too thick and have the attention span of a two year old pig.
MultiLuc28 It's a waste of time turning on the annotations again. There should be a special annotation that can't be turned of and must be used ONLY IF the creator of the video was corrected.
landed on this video 12 years after this was posted. you explained what i needed in less than 3 minutes, something which sound engineers have failed to do for me in the last few days. Thank you.
You're the one that really got me going with high quality audio. Before watching your videos I never really cared. Now I can hear the smallest differences in things. I bought ATH M50s with your recommendation. But now the noise from my computer's headphone jack is unbearable and needs to be fixed. But I don't know which DAC I should get. I don't really need one to "enhance" my audio as I'm good with an EQ, but I need something external to get rid of the noise on my computer
First check the recording devices mixer on your computer. Make sure all of them are muted and aren't listening. Sometimes the noise can be from a recording source.
No.. MB is referring to converting 1s and 0s to an analog signal used by headphones and speakers -- analog waves. There is no "digital audio converter" you clown.
a lot of people use the term digital audio converter, some people use both terms and say "digital to analogue audio converter" :') its not really that big of a deal
came through my recommended video, May 2020. I almost forgot those old videos of him making videos in the most basic ways but still try to make the effort to make it as entertaining and professional as possible. much love MKBHD
I had my earphones plugged in but when the video was running, you were talking and waving your hands around but no sound came out at all. I thought it was an opening act for the video, given the title. Only realised after a minute that it was too long for a running gag and found out I had muted audio. :D
I wish I'd found this earlier, I've been looking for a long time to improve my sound. Since I had my new motherboard I noticed that my sound quality was more flat and couldn't find a way to solve this. Your explanation of the problem is absolutely clear and awesome, I'll have a look at DACs ! Thanks for the tips !
Hi Marques, this is a viewer from 2021. You provided me more helpful information in the this 3:08 video from the year 2012 than countless posts from 2020-21. Cheers, pal!
I make those high quality 1's and 0's as a audio engineer, and like your explanation of the da convertor can reproduce. we use very high quality convertors in very well tuned studio rooms, take a look at the apogee one, really like your public service announcement, Sound is a powerful thing, and a great Da is a start to hearing music like it was intended, depth, dynamics, image, powerful..
I really like how you explain things, I'm not a native english speaker and I understand everything you say at the first listening. I have right now an Audient ID22, and the DAC is lightyears from any other dac under 1500€ (including Lynx Aurora), plus the JBL LSR305 and acoustic treatment, the setup is impressive and very "inexpensive" for what if offers!
I don't know how relevant this video still is but if people still check the comments does anyone know of any good EQ software I can use on my laptop? I normally listen through Sennheiser headphones (which sound great and work fine with the preinstalled EQ software) but I decided to get the Logitech z200 computer speakers to replace the quiet and tinny internal ones when I don't want to use headphones. These seemed to be the best in their price range yet they are overkill on the bass and drown out the mids and highs, even with the bass "tone" knob turned off. This doesn't need to be the perfect solution as any time I want clean, precise, and full range audio I'll use my headphones but are there any software EQ programs that can help me get more out of the highs and cut down the punchy bass? I don't think it's worth buying any external devices as these are cheap speakers that aren't going to perform better than how they are designed but if I can do anything software wise to help a little.
You can think of a DAC as your sound card, and an AMP just feeds more Watts, or in the case of most headphones, Milliwatts and voltages to your headphones.. However, some DACS also have a built in AMP, but most AMPs that are ONLY AMPs and not DACS tend to be stronger AMPs. The idea when you use what is called a DAC and AMP combo is to use only the DAC part of the DAC, meaning if the DAC has a built in AMP as well, DON'T use the DAC's AMP, JUST use the DAC or its soundcard, and then use your separate AMP as.. well you AMP..
+Walter White yes but a DAC converts digital audio therefore it can also be called a digital audio converter. It's not like calling it a digital to analogue converter vs called it a digital audio converter actually makes a difference.
+PvM Lad It converts digital signal to audio. That's why calling it a DIGITAL AUDIO convertor is wrong. It does not convert 'digital audio' (is that even a word?). It converts digital data.
i am! DAPs and DACs are on my radar due to mobil phones don't quit cut it. And need i mention of ditching the headphone jack? Forced me to look at options. NO! ditching the 3.5mm jack make me stay away from those brands!
yes! they are quite good and a DAC will sure make a difference. What I recommand is a cheaper one, DAC E010k. It's chinese but the company is solid and has great price/performance ratio.
IlikeBball234 No it won't. And anyone that says they do doesn't know anything about audio and are just spewing stuff they read on Head-Fi which is a terrible place that just wants to get you to spend your money. I'm probably going to get flamed for this but if you don't believe me, then get one and blind test it. And the key is you have to blind test. You can't know which one you're listening to and try to pick out the difference. Make sure the sound is at the same loudness. They can be at the same level but not the same loudness. A free sound meter app you can get on your phone can measure the DB of headphone you're using to make sure the loudness is the same.
theonlylammy Well actually let me rephrase that because what I said was slightly wrong. It might improve it but it'll be negligible as long as your onboard or whatever you're listening to doesn't have interference or crackles and the such and it is able to drive your headphone to an acceptable level for you. Usually it's not worth the investment for a dac.
***** I understand where you are coming from. I checked it up and found that All DAC's have surround sound capabilities since it's all in the digital domain what is stereo or pseudo stereo surround. This also includes external internal DAC.
I am looking into bettering my audio setup and looking up DACs on youtube, and this video comes up. And like oh my god this came out of nowehere. I didnt expect Marques to contribute to my research
Hey Marques, I really appreciate your so called Public Service Announcement. I have a 55" LG Tv, which has no hook up for headphones. It just has Digital Audio Output. I had no idea what that was, so I checked RUclips. Long story short, I found out about DAC. And watching your video I found out it has other applications. Thanks. Now I've got more options with DAC. Thanks for putting out your informative videos.
Digital to Audio - heard it like 4 or 5 times. Dude, it's Digital to Analog Converter. Now, this does make a bit of sense, does it not? Don't take me wrong, you've been doing good reviews overall, but mind you, you kind of screwed this one.
+Critical Hit Studios I have the D1, It actually isn't so great at all. The difference is pretty much placebo. And yes, I have a more than decent system.
+Durrant miller No, it's not even about liking one way or the other. I - and several other testers - could not blindpick the sound over the D1 often enough to call the audio "better" in any way.
How can he talk about audio quality and not even consider PCI sound cards? And don't say it is aimed at laptops cos then the titel should be "Laptop Audio Quality". This video is obviously just a poor excuse for him to throw out his amazon affiliates link which gets him a percentage when people buy with his link (even on other products they buy after using the link). If this was really about the audio, i wouldn't mind the amazon links, but there was little to no effort put into this video just to drop a link.
+martyfriedman666 An internal soundcard with a better frequency reproduction response will more than likely sound better than an external soundcard that cannot achieve the same kHz and hz.. HOWEVER, there are two main advantages the way I see it to an external DAC/AMP, albeit I don't believe the one he is referencing in the video is the greatest. The two main advantages of an external DAC/AMP is that, 1. The soundcard is, well.. EXTERNAL, meaning PORTABLE, buy a $200 soundcard for your PC, get that great sound at home, in your little room at your desk.. or buy a portable DAC and have that frequency response quality follow you ANYWHERE ! Also, internal soundcards conjunct with a LOT of electricity conducive hardware obviously, motherboards power supplies video cards processors etc. etc... this create EMI or electro magnetic interference which can hinder and hide sounds or even make a hissing or static noise on top of your music
bluex217 Yes, definitely true. An external dac has the advantages you mentioned, portability, reduced effects of EMI etc. however most of the higher end soundcards have shielding for EMI. That is why i said this guy never mentions anything like this in his vid but claims it to be a "best audio guide" when it is clearly missing lots and lots of important information because he just wants to make profit on his amazon affiliates link. I am not even using a soundcard. I have a digidesign Eleven Rack, which is a USB interface for guitar etc. I have only used it for the last couple weeks because it is handy for listening to songs on computer and playing guitar with them etc when using headphones. This is of benefit to me personally. While a portable user will benefit from a USB DAC. I'm well aware of these advantages and disadvantages but anyone watching this video will not be made aware of any of these issues but will instead pay twice as much money to buy an inferior product. That is why it is ridiculous to claim this to be an audio quality guide.
Man, reading some of the comments on this video gave me a good laugh. I wish people would comment in a more constructive way or at least ask if they don't know something instead of putting on their Dr Peabody costume and faking it. On the plus side, you gotta love RUclips comment threads for their comedic value. Nice video Marques, hope you're enjoying your setup
veteq101 I'd stick with an external usb DAC like MKBHD mentions. The problem with internal sounds cards is that they share the same circuitry/power with other components on the motherboard. An external DAC/Amp is able to isolate the audio circuitry and, in most cases, output a better signal.
Internal sound cards are NOT the way to go. Casey Runnells is correct, but you interpreted it incorrectly. It has nothing to do with it drawing power from the mobo; it's about a very sensitive electronic component being crammed into a box with a bunch of components that produce magnetic fields. External is much better because it takes magnetic interference out of a very complex equation.
The biggest problem with his setup is that he uses M50s at the end of the chain...which are extremely overrated cans with bloated bass, zero soundstage, overly polite mids and treble, and meh comfort. They're not bad, per se, but I wish that MKBHD would get a chance to upgrade to one of the open-air mid-fi trio cans eventually so he can hear significantly better quality and more accurate sound.

Coming back to this video 7 years later... and this HD video looks like it was shot on a $5 phone. lol, boy have we come a long way... just imagine what our videos will look like 7 years from the day i am writing this.
I am new to this audio thing, was searching about DAC and Amplifier , most of the videos explained about the DAC which are best , how to connect but no one told like this 3:09 long video. Marques you are the best🥰
Thank you for the tip. As someone who makes music as a hobby I struggled to find out why my mixes sounded off from the 'industry.' Thanks to you I figured the problem is I relied on my laptop's DAC. Thanks mate.
Thank you so much! This literally explains everything, I have had a mic for 2 years that didn't sound as good as my headset mic, and that's because I didn't have a DAC amp. This was a life saver!
I actually bought one of these and it's sounds so much better. Deep base, less static, really nice. Don't need it, but it's nice to have good quality audio.
Interesting to see how you nailed your form and presentation so early, and then just honed it over the years. As always, great video!
you explain more in 3 minutes than my teachers explains in an hour
+Yinte but he took at least 3 hours to make this magic video.
+Douglas Santos no, more like 20 minutes.
+Yinte Right? My teacher explained something in 1 hour, a sub explained it in 30 seconds..
yea i know im 11 months late but your logic is so wrong. this guy didn't explain anything he just told you what to do. i guarantee your teacher explains between the lines like HOW and WHY it's better and HOW it achieves it, the processes and what not. but you're too thick and have the attention span of a two year old pig.
Yinte comments say he messed it up. And he didn't say u can just buy a halfway decent motherboard and skip it
I think it's so sweet that Marques let's his younger brother film a video on his channel
Digital to Analog Converters dude
Turn your annotations on dude
Some people people blasts us with a nuclear annotations so he turned it off dude.
kemboy323 I know, but he could at least have checked it. I turn them off as well mostly.
MultiLuc28 It's a waste of time turning on the annotations again. There should be a special annotation that can't be turned of and must be used ONLY IF the creator of the video was corrected.
kemboy323 Something like that already exists. It's called editing. But yeah, I feel ya.
this dude did this in like 2013 and the quality is better than alot now a days
audiofiles and audiophiles haha
xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
HOW ARE YOU THE ONLY PERSON EVER TO REALIZE IT
omg xD
Yea, i though as well at he very first seconds that he meant audiophiles xDDDDDDDDDDD
Audiophiles' audio files ♫♪ლ(´ڡ`ლ)♫♪
That little android is creeping ! Lol
Bro ur voice is exactly the same
here in 2023. researching DAC's and this 10 year old video pops up. camera was crisp as hell back then too.
landed on this video 12 years after this was posted. you explained what i needed in less than 3 minutes, something which sound engineers have failed to do for me in the last few days. Thank you.
Marques was so young lol
He was even younger in 2011
you don't say
yeah he was 7 on his 7th birthday
he only looks older now because he's growing older
So young, so pure. So HD

Well, you (and they) are wrong. Best to know the acronym when posting a video on the subj.
Barny Riches You stated there are both (analog + audio converter). There are not. You're backpedaling like a typical moron.
came through my recommended video, May 2020. I almost forgot those old videos of him making videos in the most basic ways but still try to make the effort to make it as entertaining and professional as possible. much love MKBHD

He takes a lot of pictures of it.
Hi Marques, this is a viewer from 2021. You provided me more helpful information in the this 3:08 video from the year 2012 than countless posts from 2020-21. Cheers, pal!
Searching for audio stuff in May 2020 during this pandemic and naturally this comes up in my recommendations now.
Who else is watching in 2019? This man is great.
Just won an auction for an Audioengine D1. $58 after shipping.
Thanks for the suggestion.
MKBHD come a long way since 2012. Keep at it bro!
Still one of my favorite MKBHD videos! Been following you since forever
I really like how you explain things, I'm not a native english speaker and I understand everything you say at the first listening.

Whoz watchin in 2019....? Catch u guys in the next one ... peace ✌
Anyone here in 2017? Kudos to MKBHD. Grown a lot in past year.. From a nervous kid to a grown ass techie! Amazing.
File this one under: I never even thought about or knew about this! You definitely learn something new every day. Thanks sir!
00:41 to 00:46 the little android in the bottom right moves :D
2019? this is still relevant
Yes.

Ozone 6 is a mastering software that is pretty much the industry standard
So refreshing to find youtube videos that are short, to the point and informative. Thanks for the upload.
Damn, Marques, your videos are so polished now... and this was just 4 years ago.
2019 recomendation squad unite!
😂😂😂😂😂 anyone watch this in 2023 ? Time flies so fast
Watching it in 2024
DAC = Digital to Analog Converter. Not Digital to Audio Converter. Sorry, Marques.
Back when MKBHD didn’t even know what DAC stood for
My god, i didnt even know this channel was arround for so long!
LOL
Did anyone else notice how the black android figure slowly creeped into the frame?
nobody expects...

thanks!
macho idiots get out
Digital to Audio Converter? That doesn't make any sense. Digital to ANALOG converter.
crazy how far hes come, gotta respect this guy
I searched audio and your video popped up , wow
A DAC is a digital to ANALOGUE converter, not a digital audio converter. How do you get this wrong?
+Walter White yes but a DAC converts digital audio therefore it can also be called a digital audio converter. It's not like calling it a digital to analogue converter vs called it a digital audio converter actually makes a difference.
+Walter White wow... did you really TOTALLY ignored that audio is also analog?
+Walter White shouldn't you be somewhere making meth?
+PvM Lad It converts digital signal to audio. That's why calling it a DIGITAL AUDIO convertor is wrong. It does not convert 'digital audio' (is that even a word?). It converts digital data.
+Eduard Voicu it was a child's mistake. atleast Mkbhd has grown up, and become more professional with great content now. :)
Godamnit, its a Digital to Analogue Converter ...
he corrected that in his annotations ...
Raphael Navarro fair enough, I dont watch with annotations on, drives me nuts lol.
Back when he had his badass Deadmau5 outro
Your videos were fire even 8 years ago man! PogChamp
Marques has really come a long way
who's watching this in 2016?
me
haha xD Same!
me
lel almost 2017
i am! DAPs and DACs are on my radar due to mobil phones don't quit cut it. And need i mention of ditching the headphone jack? Forced me to look at options. NO! ditching the 3.5mm jack make me stay away from those brands!
Did everybody see that Android bot appear at the bottom right corner??
someone plz help! should I still consider getting a DAC when my sound card is high definition audio? it's a Realtek High Definition Graphics Card!?
Definitely yes.
Anything Realtek should always be replaced if possible
Google Mayflower audio support a RUclipsr with yer bin-ness :)
That's the name of the driver. It has nothing to do with hardware
That's what comes built into your computer. An external DAC would be much better.
Man this channel has changed so much in 8 years lol
Coming from the future.... MKBHD you rock man 👊🏼
So I recently just got some Sennheiser HD650's through Air mIles , would a DAC be worth the price to improve the sound quality drastically ?
yes! they are quite good and a DAC will sure make a difference. What I recommand is a cheaper one, DAC E010k. It's chinese but the company is solid and has great price/performance ratio.

Why would you buy HD650's without knowing the 101's. Of course a DAC would improve quality.
pablo coronel Too bad that quality is not audible to the human ear 90% of the time.
Who's watching this in 2017??
Noor Hussain eleven months ago it was december 2016..... Why you lying
No, sorry, 2018. 😕

He must have deleted the previous high comment about this.
This video is a gem, but we need an updated version!! A lot has changed in the past 8 years
Bruhh reccomended this on year 2021 see yall 30years later
this is in my June 2019 recommendation...
Anyone else see the green android guy appear at 0:35 in the bottom right
and disappear at 2.00
thats kind of a tease for viewers i guess
back at 2:25 IT FREAKS ME OUT
Dem jump cuts
Just noticed, in every shot it moves a bit D:
What about for gaming? would you consider a DAC to be good for gaming?
Does a DAC have surround sound capabilities for games?
***** why? I head the soundstage is improved with DAC and Amps such as the Schiit series
***** I understand where you are coming from.
I checked it up and found that All DAC's have surround sound capabilities since it's all in the digital domain what is stereo or pseudo stereo surround. This also includes external internal DAC.
+Smart Guy he could download Razer surround or RealTEK audio software so it would work with the 7.1surround sound.
King Nxt Dac and Amp such as the Schiit work with virtual surround software?
I heard it was hard.
Mr B just download the software open it and boom
Marques, you have a great delivery and a great command of the subject Keep up the good work.
Audio was always an afterthought for my custom gaming PC setups.
Now it has become equally as important and enjoyable as graphics to me.
Digital to audio converter .. really ?

High end internal sound cards do not take power from the motherboard. I agree with the laptop option but laptops are the cheaper option
Nonsense! what distortion ratio are you getting on your device ?? And have you never heard of screening! INTERNAL is Best
You have no! argument.
2017 anyone? :D
Pu55y D3s7r013r nigga I'm from 2021
Wtf lol watch bottom right at 0:34

Well its an android thing.
This boy is going places...i can see a great future ahead of him
The biggest problem with his setup is that he uses M50s at the end of the chain...which are extremely overrated cans with bloated bass, zero soundstage, overly polite mids and treble, and meh comfort. They're not bad, per se, but I wish that MKBHD would get a chance to upgrade to one of the open-air mid-fi trio cans eventually so he can hear significantly better quality and more accurate sound.
You do realize this video was made 2 years ago, right? Most likely, he has purchased another pair of headphones by now.
Willie D. Washington I don't know, I feel like he would have made a review on them by now
Bro the M50's are amazing for the price. Do you have any better suggestions?
Callum Furey AKG Q701 for about $20 more than the M50x are significantly better.
Callum Furey beyerdynamic custom one pros or these www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-headphones

Found this searching for info about DACs... Great to look back at what you were doing 7 years ago - cheers! :-)
10 years but he still sounds the same!!😱😱😱
Coming back to this video 7 years later... and this HD video looks like it was shot on a $5 phone. lol,
boy have we come a long way... just imagine what our videos will look like 7 years from the day i am writing this.
You got to be the best reviewer on RUclips thx
I am new to this audio thing, was searching about DAC and Amplifier , most of the videos explained about the DAC which are best , how to connect but no one told like this 3:09 long video. Marques you are the best🥰
Watching 9yrs old MKBHD - unreal 😬
Thank you for the tip. As someone who makes music as a hobby I struggled to find out why my mixes sounded off from the 'industry.' Thanks to you I figured the problem is I relied on my laptop's DAC.
Thanks mate.
Did RUclips bring us all together to see baby Marques again?
Coming back in June 2020 and see the video is already liked, nice!
How far you've come Marques!
Thank you so much! This literally explains everything, I have had a mic for 2 years that didn't sound as good as my headset mic, and that's because I didn't have a DAC amp. This was a life saver!
Keep on being awesome Marques
I actually bought one of these and it's sounds so much better. Deep base, less static, really nice. Don't need it, but it's nice to have good quality audio.
Marques has been really good with easter eggs, that crawling android
@Marques Brownlee, youve came a long way... Always remember & appreciate. :)
Whew, I've never watched one of your older vids. Glad you learned what a barber does.
Nothing has changed but the hair and bank account
