Practical, common sense and well explained..
Thanks Michael!
I have been making a very similar recipe for years now, and it works very well.
It always amazes me how much cheaper it is compared to commercial polish
Great video. I was stationed at RAF Fairforce in 1980 and was married in Lechlade, Gloucester - 1982; a year after Prince Charles and Lady Dianna. Now I have a wood polish recipe.................. thank you.
Thank you for your service 🙂
Please, please just carry on doing what you do! Your videos bring me much joy ❤️
Awww thank you Donna ☺️
Love it tooo! And I really like the way you explain these things.
Thanks Vanessa!
Definitely the sort of content that I like! The gardening and chicken keeping videos are great, but fall into the "file away the info for (hopefully) some unspecific time in the future" category. Household products I can make and use right now. Thanks for sharing!
That's great feedback thank you. We very much don't want this to be an "only if you have acres of land" channel, so will do more of the "household" stuff!
I LOVE doing my own thing and making stuff! I've done milktarts and sourdough bread and kefir and recently I made my first spoon. I've written two novels and made jam and marmalade... I love MAKING stuff!
Outstanding!
Thank you! Super no music short and sweet!
Thank you
Thank you. I love watching you make various products and explaining why you use different ingredients. I would have liked seeing you apply the furniture polish to some wood to see how it comes up.
Your wish is my command 😁

Perfect! Its nice to learn things like this that once were the norm, but have been lost in favor of modern convenience which is such a shame. Thank you for teaching us! 💜
I agree, its great to make more and buy less!
This is exactly what I need, please do more.. Thanks for the channel so far
Will do Carl
Absolutely ALL information greatfully received 👍👍😎
Thank you. I was considering showing how to make Dubbin soon 🙂
I love this . I have learned to make most every thing I use. Thank you
Thanks Nancy - it surely has to make sense?
I accidentally stumbled on this channels while searching for shoe polishes... ever since then I am hooked... I really like what you're doing especially the moisturizer ... thinking to make it for my mum..
She will thank you if you do! 😉
@@EnglishCountryLife showed your video to my mom... she asks if you can make a video on tile/floor cleaners... one which could remove normal every day stains
@@aphajji What a great idea. Can I ask what type of tiles? Are they porous terracotta or quarry tiles or something else?
@@EnglishCountryLife they are porcelain floor tiles. my mom requests a cleaner which can clean stains, restore shine (somewhat) and can be used as an everyday cleaner... I know that's too much to ask but hope that you can help... :)
@@aphajji We have a list of future videos Asad so it won't be soon, but leave it with me. Hugh
This was a perfect video. I have been making various beeswax based products and like yourself I worked out that following recipes is not the best way to understand what you are trying to achieve. It is really useful to hear you explaining this at the beginning and how each element works. I use a slow cooker which I find is a lot easier that a double boiler. Also probably less of a fire risk when it comes to adding the final ingredients. Great videos. I’m hooked.
That's really kind of you - thank you !
This is very much the sort of thing I'm interested in. I'm a hobbyist woodworker and would rather save money on finishes to be able to maybe sell things for less money or buy more local lumber.
Excellent. I'm planning to cover traditional glues & varnishes this Winter when I have some workshop time
I can't find wax polish. Now I can make my own for my favorite furniture.
So glad it was helpful!
Yes! I would like to make my own soap, car polish, equipment rust preventers, and all sorts of things. I definitely enjoy making these little odds and end by myself.
Right, I will do a few more! I've just filmed making hand cream. I will do soap soon 😉. Hugh
Love this kind of stuff. Thank you great video
I'm so glad, thank you. Hugh
Thanks for this. I would have liked to have seen the consistency of it by you showing it being rubbed into wood. Great that you're using all natural products!

@@EnglishCountryLife Thank you!
Really clear video thanks.....I think the intro was a bit long, but the the explanation of products, their origins and the cautionary advice re the oils etc top notch thanks very much
Thanks Wayne!
All for learning to mix my own

Yes. Very useful and practical. Environmentally sound too
Thank you!
This is just what I was looking for ... more please! I can't tolerate all the chemicals in the store-bought polish and I have beautiful antiques that need good care. This is perfect. I just searched and found your channel, thank you!
I'm glad you liked it, we make a lot of household products & I have videos on a few more, but if there is something specific you would like to see, do let us know
@@EnglishCountryLife I will! Thank you.
I stumbled cross your polish videos etc by accident and am really enjoying them. They seem to have a certain Jack Hargreaves style to them that I remember fondly from my childhood, I am certainly going to view the rest of your videos as moving to a small holding and want to be as self sufficient as possible. For me you've really nailed this sort of subject. Well done.
That's a huge compliment Bob - I loved Jack's style 🙂
The more you know! Knowledge is NEVER a bad thing! Can't wait to make this and give it a try....gotta go....my wax is just about melted! Thanks...and keep up the "homemade goodies"!!
Thanks for the kind words! Filming how to pickle a cucumber today!
I'm a little late to the party, but just wanted to add that it is most definitely something I'm interested in. I searched for it and was happy to find someone in England doing something I searched for. usually most of the things I see are American or Canadian and that isn't a problem aside from the ingredients and shops not being relevant. Thanks for this. Subscribed.
Excellent, glad you liked it 🙂
new to the site, want everything -but do love anything around making things like this
Thanks Peter! I will do more when I get a chance! Hugh
Just bought some oak furniture and have been looking for a beeswax, came across your video explained very simply and are looking at making my own due to the cost, well put together, cheers for the info 👍
I'm glad it was useful! Do let me know how how you get on? Hugh

Love the smell and finish of proper beeswax polish. And now I’ve watched this I’ll be having a go at making my own this weekend.
Hope you don’t take this the wrong way but there’s something about you, your manner, the filming style that reminds me of Jack Hargreaves and the Out Of Town programme. Used to love watching those programmes as a kid 😀. Looking forward to many more of yours.
I take that as the highest possible compliment! Jack remains a hero of mine, calm, informative and full of traditional skills. I loved his stuff!
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I'm going to make some of this and try it out.

I would assume in this production a single full jar of wax unmelted would be the initial measurement in the raw bowl. A brilliant presentation
Hi Chris, you can make to any size you need which is why I give proportions rather than measurement (in the description) 🙂

Just found your Channel, and I have subscribed. Thank you for sharing.
I am a Wax Processor in my spare time. My friend is a beekeeper, and in exchange for beeswax, I process his cappings and brood wax etc.
He makes candles with his share, I use my share to make polish, hand cream, lip balm, and cork grease for musical instruments.
Your polish making method is the same as mine, except I stand my turps & oil in a warm water Bath while the wax is melting. It means the mixture solidifies more slowly and more evenly I think.
I like watching others doing these things as I always learn something.
More of these videos please. Thanks again.
The warm water bath is a great idea!
Super happy to have found your channel. This is my quirk as well.
Excellent!
You mentioned toilet cleaner and I must admit that I am intrigued. I have a septic and hard Florida water, so keeping the toilet clean is difficult. Can you, please, do a video on toilet cleaner? Thank you, Toni
I will Toni, but as a hint look at the ingredients of septic safe toilet cleaner. I bet you find citric acid. This dissolves lime scale and is anti bacterial. Make a 5% citric acid solution with a little dish soap added 😉
Really enjoyed this video Thank you
So glad!
It's off great interest, I'd think of the old house hold books, invaluable advise easy to grasp.
Thank you 🙂
Great videos and very clear instructions. I will definitely use your recipes. Thanks heaps
Thanks very much! Hugh
Great video! I was worried it would be too long before I started, but it was interesting the whole way through. I like this type of content as well as the chicken/gardening/food preservation content. Thank you!
Thanks Renee - I promise to keep them shorter in future. You know me, I get enthused!
Excellent video. Could you please also make a video on making a liquid white polish for plastic stuff (car dashboards, computers, plastic home appliances, etc). That would be great. Thanks.
I will add it to the list!
@@EnglishCountryLife Thanks in advance.
Had a go at doing this while living in Crete for some furniture we made, the local apiarist supplied the wax after an evening drinking his Raki, we had some wax left over with bits in that worked well for dubbing our boots while working the olives during a wet winter. Another interesting video. atb, Rob.
Thanks Rob! I'm going to do a video on boot care & one on saddle soap too :)
hi there loved the videos about the house hold products, just seen you for first time and just started leather craft as a new hobby so could save me a lot of money I tried to note every thing down but it would be a help if you could put up a list of ingredients at the end of the video then i can pause it and copy many thanks, and if you know anything about leather dye, that would be very handy

I'm going to make some solid perfume with beeswax, oil, and fragrance and happened to have come across this video. Interesting that, minus the turpentine, the same ingredients for solid perfume are in this furniture polish. I do woodwork as well, though. This is an interesting video. Quite a bit of good information. Thanks.
A few simple ingredients can make so much! I have s shoe polish video that takes this theme further! Hugh
Fantastic info thanks a mil
Glad you liked it John 🙂
More of this please!!!
Will do!
@@EnglishCountryLife Thank you very much!!!
My opinion - loved all of it and the length was fine. I agree with the comment about Jack Hargreaves - never missed one of his shows if I could help it. Being able to make this to the consistency you want means it is possible to have your own range for different purposes (rust prevention, lubrication of surfaces, wood polish, leather polish/waterproofing). Whether I'll ever get round to making some I don't know but it certainly won't be due to lack of knowledge now 👍
That's really kind Dave, thanks. Hugh
Mądry film. Dziękuję

Glad I bumped into your channel whilst searching for the ingrediants for beeswax polish.
Having watched other vids previously heating linseed oil directly in a pan over a naked flame, you may well have saved me a trip to A&E.
Thank you for the warning and the use of real turpentine, as again it seems others are using white spirits, oh and again dangerously heating directly over a flame.☠
Cheers
Look forward to your other vids👍
Really glad it was useful 😉
Watched all the leather and wood polish videos, now on tp the brandy! Happy I found your channel.

This is how to make moisturizer - it's probably similar

Great video. How long will a bottle of boiled Linseed oil last if it's so reactive? As you use the oil the headspace of the bottle fills up with air. Do you have to use it within a short space of time before it spoils or becomes inactivated?
Generally not no. It's not generally bad unless left on a cloth. Even then, it isn't definitely going to combust. But it is an unstable reaction as it polymerises & the risk is there
Great video. Thank you for the production. Would love to see how you would make boot grease/polish.
Shoe polish is definitely in the plan now!
this is awesome. I'm guessing the "just liquid" consistency is about like Dubbin?
also, you can make saddle soap? I have a saddle! Teach me!
Will do, plain or fancy?
@@EnglishCountryLife both?
@@sashadistan3687 Ooookay. I'm trying to think of a way of keeping in short, but covering the options.
Wonderful. I have ordered all the ingredients and can't wait to make it. I remember you mentioning carnauba wax for a nice shine/gloss. What I can't find is how much carnauba to add to your simple recipe! I know it would be a small-ish amount, perhaps remove some of the beeswax and add that same amount of carnauba? Could you please respond with your proportion suggestion? Much MUCH appreciated!
BTW, I LOVE using old socks for application...one for putting on the wax, and one for polishing after!!!
The problem with carnauba is cracking - its so very hard. I would suggest trying no more than 5%
@@EnglishCountryLife sounds perfect to me. so 95% beeswax and max 5% carnauba! Can't wait to get after my 6 foot oak church pew lol! THANKS! LOVE your channel...after my own heart. I also have chickens(3), garden, make everything I can, and so forth, in Montana, USA!
In thanks, here is a food safe wax recipe I "developed" myself for cutting boards (I have a few NICE blocks): 3 parts coconut oil to 1 part beeswax, melt in double boiler. Remove from heat and add several drops lemon essential oil and let it set up.. If you like, you are welcome to present this concoction on your channel. I apply with my hands, to be honest, about once a month. It hardens into the pores nicely and of course does not go rancid. No more "food-grade" mineral oil!!!! (not that I ever used that). People on YT are always yakking about food safe wood conditioners and I have not seen a better one. :)
So I noticed you wore gloves to make it, is it caustic to skin when you polish? I wondered if I should wear gloves when polishing
Hi LaDonna ! Merry Christmas.
The gloves are because boiled linseed oil can be nasty and absorbed through skin. In a wax like polish its not a problem in that way. I have never worn gloves using the polish.
Hope that helps? Hugh
That really was useful and interesting. Thanks.
Thanks Caroline, I'm glad it was useful 🙂
Love the video
Thanks Ray!
Stepping away a little from the principle of 'all natural ingredients' for a moment, I have recently tried using a 50/50 *Microcrystalline wax/Carnauba wax mix for the wax fraction of the polish. This gives a rock hard finish that will not take fingermarks. It does have to be made a little softer than your mix so it can be applied quickly and quite thinly to a smallish area at a time. It is hard work buffing it out, but the finish is exceptional [if dazzling is what you want], and you are prepared to put in that little bit more effort. It can be applied over existing beeswax finishes just fine. Not something I would use for most work, but it's nice to have that option available.
*Microcrystalline wax is a petrochemical product noted for its hardness, durability and flexibility. It costs about the same per kilo as a good beeswax.
Are you using Renaissance Wax (ren wax) for the microcrystalline component?
Do you use JUST the MW/Carnuba mixture or do you mix the mixture with something else like mineral oil?
@@EnglishCountryLife
No. I use Microcrystalline Paraffin wax, about £16 / kg on ebay. It would be nicer if bees learned to make M/C Beeswax ;
@@susanp.collins7834
It does need to be cut with a solvent to carry the wax. If it were just a wax mix it would be solid as a rock and impossible to apply. You can use white spirit or turpentine with or without boiled linseed oil. I tend to use white spirit as it is much cheaper than pure turpentine and does exactly the same job. It thins the wax to a paste and after application, it evaporates leaving the wax behind. Turpentine has a pretty powerful smell which tends to hang around a bit longer than the white spirit smell.
I cant give you a proportion of white spirit you need as I test it as I go along. I melt the waxes add some w. spirit and put a few drops of the mixture onto a steel plate. It cools very quickly and you can test to see how soft it is when it 'sets'. If too hard, add a bit more and try again. Hope this helps

Sealing exterior of behave instead of painting. Would the furniture polish work? Provide best natural and effective solution.
The best solution would be a natural varnish, I will try to film the recipe

Glad it was helpful! Hugh
Working our way through your back catalogue Huw and learning so much! Loved this and will definitely give it a go. We very much enjoy your how-to videos for things that complement a self reliant and self sustainable way of life. What would you use to rejuvenate wooden spoons/utensils in the kitchen?
Generally I use a food safe, non polymerising oil on utensils. A good run with wire wool, then a thorough soak in oil. I use flaxseed oil as it's fairly flavourless whereas something like walnut oil can impart s taste. Hugh

Hi,
Great video. What would the measurements be if I wanted to make smaller quantities. Like a shoe polish tin size?
Its equal parts of the three ingredients. If you measure the volume of your container (by weighing it empty then full of water) it should be straightforward to estimate roughly how much of each ingredient you need
Thank you. I'll let you know the results 😉
@@stephenwalsh211 Yes please!
How much wax did you use
Equal parts of beeswax, turpentine & linseed oil 😉
