As much Godzilla (1998) is a guilty pleasure cuz of my nostalgic memories of watching it as a kid, I would (sadly) admit that it has aged like milk and hasn't received as much praise from both critics (literally) and fans of Godzilla. I guess the director was *trying way too hard* to westernize Japan's iconic monster like "Godzilla" for western audiences; and it failed miserably.

That’s what I was thinking. I always thought that Godzilla‘s babies looked a lot like the velociraptors from the Jurassic Park franchise and that is not a compliment.

A few things I need to say.
I saw this movie at a drive-in as a child, and I fell asleep through it. It was the second of a double feature.
I had a book vision of the this movie, and I enjoyed it. When someone says, “The book was better.” That can for books based off movies.
I would suggest checking out the animated series based off the movie. It’s may not be true “Godzilla” levels, but it’s loads better than the movie.
I did read a magazine celebrating 100 years of sci-fi, and in the Godzilla section, they said this was is known as G.O.I.N. “Godzilla only in name.

Jam, you forgot that three of the actors in Godzilla were voice actors on The Simpsons, that the latter did a homage years later.
Also, you should do the Gamera movies down the line, now thanks to MST3K that helped bring the movies to a new generation.

If you want to see what the movie would be like with characters. Check out the animated series that was after the movie. The series feels like the traditional godzilla movies. And if you see a better movie than the 98 one. Check out godzilla minus one.

Seeing the military cause more destruction than godzilla in this movie is so cringe . In the other godzilla movies the military were able to hit godzilla, they just couldn't kill him due to godzilla being invincible to all their weapons.

I personally view this movie more as just a normal giant monster movie, rather than a Godzilla movie. seriously it’s amazing how they got every single thing wrong with how they portrayed zilla in this movie, I mean he barely looks like Godzilla, he’s more of a mutated iguana rather than a monster that was made because of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he runs away from the millitary, he can’t shoot atomic breath and they even managed to get his roar wrong with him sound less like Godzilla and more like an elephant. it’s very clear that Roland emmerich just wanted to make another America is great action movie, rather than a Godzilla movie. And while I will admit the animatronics and suit effects actually do look pretty good, the CGI is just awful, even for the 90s standards it’s just bad. But again I can see why it does have a cult following for many people, especially people who grew up in the late 90s and the early 2000s, this film was what got them into the franchise and again I personally do like this movie but more as a standalone giant monster movie or even as a modern remake to the Ray harryhausen film The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Also this film got an animated series and that show was actually pretty good, so yeah it’s a bad movie god awful but I can see why it has a cult following.

Reviewing a 90s trainwreck starring Matthew Broderick & following it up with a live-action straight-to-DVD sequel based on a cartoon.
    Funny how that's happened twice.

Remember seeing this at the cinema when I was about 8. My biggest takeaway from the experience was that it was *way* too long. When Zilla returns to give chase to our leads one last time after the babies are blown up, I recall being just being restless and wanting the film to end already.
But yeah, it was a real bastardization of the iconic character. Thank God the animated series treated the property with much more respect.

For those that haven’t I definitely recommend listening to “How did this not get made’s” podcast episodes on Godzilla and let’s just say how we got to this was one heck of a ride.
To try and make a short story version is this was pitched to be Godzilla vs the griffin but was rejected due to the budget being too high. (Which ironically the final film wound up having a much larger budget than the one they reject and the animation wasn’t complete until the day before the movie went to theaters) when Rolland Emeric got involved and had to go to get the approval of Toho to use Godzilla they audibly gasped when they saw the designs for their Godzilla. And later on in one of the future Godzilla films because Toho had the rights to use the 1998 Godzilla designs they used it for a creature they called Zilla and Godzilla utterly destroyed him.
And to show how he didn’t learn anything from this situation Enrik would later say something to the akin of “I think we made a great movie and if you don’t like it, to hell with you”.

3:35 And even then, he didn't make Zilla kill them in his film, even Roger and Ebert themselves pointed that out. It's just lame.

Btw we could’ve had a much better film with a Godzilla designed after the legendary Stan Winston which is a much more faithful design of Godzilla than the one we got. Though I have heard rumors that Mr Tatapolis was honored his creature design was later used in a future Toho Godzilla film.

I think people hate this movie because of just the sheer, utter CONTEMPT Emmerich had toward the franchise. Like, oh, you're not gonna treat this franchise with respect and dignity? Fine, NEITHER ARE WE.

It was used a little more than you think like for Independence Day not only Puppets for the aliens but the effects for the fog for the initial invasion was actually made by moving water inside a fish tank.
