Best explanation of what a compressor does I've ever seen. FINALLY someone who really has the ability to put it in simple words. THANK YOU for your time and for sharing this with all of us. I'm learning so much since I just started to tweak some audio tracks on Cakewalk.
Hey Mickey. I'm so glad you found it useful. It's probably one of the more difficult things to understand in audio production, so once you get this, you can get anything :)
Best compressing tutorial I've ever seen
Mike you really have the ability to break down and simplify something that everyone can really understand properly. I now fully understand the different aspects of the compressor. Thanks for sharing
I have tried many times to explain compression to beginning-stage sound engineers, and I’ll admit that you’ve done a better job of it than I would. So from now on I’ll just be sending people to this video instead.
High praise, Sir. You’re really good at the art of teaching.
😎👍👍
Been a muso my whole life, have been in many bands and projects and have successfully avoided learning compression all the while. The time has come to learn and this video is priceless content. Thanks a bunch
My pleasure:)
This is the best compression explanation/lesson I have ever seen on RUclips. Thank you so much for your generosity to share this with us!
I keep coming back to this brilliant and simple explanation . As usual so easy to understand...thank you.
Very few videos make the proverbial 'light bulb' go on in my head. This was one of them! Although I already understand compression, this helps me see it in a way that I can use it much more CREATIVELY!
Have you just done what a bazillion other videos failed to? You just made me understand the different controls of compressing (I had a rough grasp of the overall function of it, though)
Dude, I just love your Videos! Like, seriously, you seem very (!) competent in what you are talking about, also you are able to put complex things in easy words, so that even an idiot like me can understand it, and you really seem like a very nice guy!
Thanks so much for your tutorials, especially the ones for cakewalk, since it's my DAW of choice.
Keep up the good work, I wish you the best!
Oh, and could you maybe make a (in-depth-)tutorial on how to mix a track in its whole? What I mean ist, f.e. if I try to mix a track with vocals, the outcome always feels like it's "only" Instrumental and Vocals "on top of each other", not like a complete track, where Instruments and Vocals create a track together ... I hope you can understand what I mean, I don't really know how to describe it.
Thanks for your content again, love from Germany!
Haha, well really this is my favorite comment. It took me a long time to 'get' compession, so I really hoped I could explain it in a way most people can understand. So I'm very very pleased it's done that for you :)
As for your suggestion, I'm about to start filming a series of recording a complete song in cakewalk, beginning to end. I will spend a fair amount of time in that, on recording and mixing vocals. I hope that can help you!
@@CreativeSauce I'm already hyped! :D
Totally agree with Harry. First time I've seen a really comprehensive and easy to digest video about compression. Very well explained.
You rock Mike!
Love from a Brazilian living in Sydney.
This is the clearest guide to compression I've come across. It's not that difficult really. Thanks
I hope this channel will go viral someday. You deserved way more subs!
It's quite simple really, isn't it. But only when it's explained properly. Bloody marvellous, mate, thanks.
I agree.. the best description of Compression/Compressors.. and I took rec-eng classes years ago, and they brushed over it, and not a very good explanation.. It has remained a thorn in my side to understand it.. You ROCK, Mike, I get it now.. now to experiment.. Thank you..
Very clear explanation Mike, you are a very good communicator. Thanks 👍 A little playlist of videos like this for all the basic mixing plugins would be great.😊
You really are a great teacher Mike. You have helped me master topics that were completely unattainable to me. Thank you!!
If you haven't already done so, please do a beginner's guide to limiters. Thanks for all the great work you do. I love this channel
Thank you for simplifying this. You just gained a follower. You deserve more subs
Dear Mike, this is by far the best explanation on how a compressor works. I am a German native, learned English at school but your explanation is marvellous. It is well done, simple and makes everything clear.
Well explained! best I've seen and most understandable so far!
And it all becomes a bit clearer. thanks Mike
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL .......... AS ALWAYS!
Thanks John :)
Excellent explanation of compression I’ve seen
What a video! Thank you so much for explaining things so clearly.
Even experts can find something of value from videos like these. Watching this reminded me to actively choose between compressing based on peak or RMS, even though you didn't cover it.
Well-done!! Most helpful video I’ve seen for understanding compression.
Finally a video that explains compression in true laymans terms! Thanks soooo much Mike I love your tutorials!
Your videos are amazing, man.
Thank you - that's much appreciated!
Ur A GOAT at explaining stuff
great simplified explanation!! thank u!
Haha! Awesome:)
Hi Mike! Best video l've seen on learning the compressor..and
l've seen a lot. Great channel. All the best!
Well - thats quite a compliment - thank you!
Great stuff! Thanks for theses awesome videos.
this video is really good, thanks for explaining, now i understand what it does and why people use it :) i've been taking notes for myself
Awesome guide Mike! I smashed the like button 5 times. Can't wait for the next guide.
Best Compression Lesson Ever. Thanks
Thank you Mike, the best instructive explanation about audio compression I ever seen. Now I understand better this tool. Thanks again!
as always your videos this is great. I look at them every time again, allowing me not to forget these tiny pieces of knowledge which would hinder me to "make my sound GREAT AGAIN"
Great video Mike. Wish I could have watched it ten years ago!
Cheers Keith - I wish I'd made it 10 years ago!
@@CreativeSauce :D
This is the best compression video ever!
Another great video, Thanks Mike
Thanks Rob :)
Great video...
Love your videos. Where is your video on using compressor for limiting
Bang! Another great video. 🙏
great job explaining as always
Wowww just wow.... thanks for sharing your knowledge...
Very well explained Sir thank you!
I love the way you explained. Thank you sir.
❤ great tutorial... thanks
Excellent video!!!! So clear!!!
I love your videos, please keep them coming.
Hey Alan - thanks so much man. Many more to come!
Well done Sir ! Thanks for all ur tuto. As i am increasing my knowledge as i am taking more pleasure into the whole process of music creation ...!
Great explanation!
Awesome video !!! Very clear, very understandable !
Damn dude. This is the best video on compression ive seen. And I've seen most of them 😁👍
Very informative, thank you!
I just recently discovered your channel. Thank you so much! Very helpful
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much for watching :)
Man. Your work really Apreciative. ❤❤❤
Excellent mike......easily the best one on youtube......great work mate. P.s i sent you an email to your website asking for a bit of advice
Hi Glyn - sorry for the delay! I just emailed you :)
Thank you for this. I learned a lot from your tutorial. I am so glad to be a subscriber.
Thank-You! Brilliantly clear tutorial. I suspect now that I've probably been bludgeoning some of my tracks with a limiter when I could have gotten a more nuanced and creative result from a compressor (which I had previously used mostly for side-chaining effects). I look forward to getting back to my DAW so I can experiment & practice with the compressor in some of those limiter circumstances. Cheers!
Aaw, Mick. Lovely comprehensive introduction to compression. I've an embarrassing admission. I didn't completely understand compression until I started teaching and had to explain it fully. I'd been an engineer for ten odd years at that point. 😂 Nice graphics too by the way…
This is probably the best video on basics of compression, which will be very useful, since I'll finally be able to understand what I'm doing in the mix xD
BTW, I'm interested if you've seen the newest Native Instruments guitar library "Session Guitarist, Picked Acoustic". If the plugin perfoms as well as in the walkthrough video, then I gotta say, this might be one of the best guitar libraries on the market.
thank you for the explanation
Very good Video indeed
Dude this is GREAT
Thank you!
great info
Good vid. Thanks.
I'd like a specific example. For example, using a kick and snare. Go over what you would do and why. 👍
Thx very much for your videos and tutorials! I like your channel and watch it a lot.
There are a lot of free VST-Plugins for the basics of mixing out there (compressor and eq). On the other hand i see a lot of people who use payable vsts. Almost every youtuber presents the "best vst plugins" but he relates often to terms of usability. Almost no one relates to a difference in sound, especially to pay-vsts. Are there any noticable differences between the free (ex.) TDL Molok and the Pro C2 in terms of sound? Same for TDR Nova and Pro Q3 or any other pay-vst...
All the best and make you a happy new year
thank you so much your were a big help
great video
Amazing video, very helpful. Appreciate the effort :D
Hi Mike
Thanks a lot for this great video. You do a great job. What is the kneep knob for ?
Thank you. The knee on a compressor basically allows it to gradually increase the ratio once the signal is over the threshold. This can help to make the compression more transparent.
Excellent. Could you do another one on compression, but this time with graphics showing how the wave form is being affected?
Very helpful. Thanks.
Can you do a video on explaining volume relative to Decibels.
A Great Video
0:56 Types of compressors.
2:24 Think of a compressor as a volume control. A compressor responds automatically. The level where we start to turn down the volume is the Threshold.
3:16 Threshold. Lower the threshold decreases the volume peak.
4:18 Where the threshold should be depends on the signal in question and this is why compressor presets are not extremely useful, you have to adjust their threshold to the particular signal.
4:40 Ratio. How much to turn it down. 5:06 2.0:1 means for every 2 decibels above the threshold only one is outputted. 4.0:1 - for every 4 decibels above the threshold only one is outputted.
5:57 1.0:1 - nothing is being compressed. Demo is more compression applied.
6:35 Compressing it so much, it's effectively "limiting" it. A limiter plugin doesn't let anything past the threshold.
6:53 Attack. Now how QUICKLY to turn it down. To understand attack, we have to understand transients.
7:29 Wave form of the kick drum. The part where it's loudest right at the start is the transient - the initial impact. The attack affects the transient.
8:02 A slow attack will likely miss the initial impact but then the rest of the signal will be compressed. 8:30 Demo of a slow attack getting faster on the kick drum.
8:58 Release - how quickly it should return to normal. The tail of the kick drum signal will be affected by the release time. There's a low frequency ring to the drum.
9:43 A short release time will make the compressor go back to normal quickly so we hear the tail of the signal, with a long release time the tail is compressed and we won't hear it. Demo.
10:23 Make-up Gain / Gain / Output / Output level. Compression to make things louder.
10:48 An audio wave. We perceive how loud things are from the average volume more than the peak. So to make something sound louder, you can increase the average volume.
11:12 Increasing the average volume makes the peak level clip. Using the compressor to reduce the peak allows you to use the make-up gain to increase the overall volume without peaking.
11:53 Experiment with purpose. How do you want to change the sound? How much and how quickly do you want to compress it? How much of the transient and tail do you want to hear?
12:25 Wrap up. Look out for more advanced compression tutorials in the future.
Nice
Mike, do you typically add compression on every track or only on specific instruments?
Would love to see an EQ explenation also.👍
I hope this can help!! ruclips.net/video/DbOBtnNyGYg/видео.html
Hi Mike! I normally show up on a different gamer account but I've now used my music channel to subscribe to help you out. You know plugins I love on everything? OZONE 8 and NEUTRON 2 🙃
Thank you! Yeah - I'm with ya 100% on Ozone 8 :)
Thank you so much for your videos again. Theyre always great!. Anyways, I would like to ask you a question about release time Ive had a long time. I dont understand perfectly what the compressor does in the release time, I mean. Lets say I have a threshold of -20dB, a ratio of 2:1 and the signal goes below this level, and my release time is 20ms. ¿What is really doing the compressor in this 20ms, if the order i gave to the software is to compress the signal once it is ABOVE the threshold? What is the ratio of compression in those 20 miliseconds when the signal is below that threshold? I understand the compressor's mechanism when the signal is above the threshold, but cant really get what is doing once the signal goes below it. Thank you so much again!
That's a great question, and thanks for asking it!
So, the release time starts, once the signal falls below the threshold. Over that period, the compressor goes from it's current ratio, to 1:1. So let's say your ratio is 4:1, and as you say the release time is 20ms. Once the signal is below the threshold , over the next 20ms, the ratio goes from 4:1 to 1:1.
Incidentally, attack is similar, in the sense that it is the amount of time it takes to go from no compression, to the target compression, once the threshold is reached. I hope that helps!
@@CreativeSauce Thank you so much for your answer. But for example, lets say that right after the signal goes below the threshold it is in -23dB. And my ratio is 2:1. Is still compressing even if the signal is below the threshold? How does it compress a quiet signal? Whats the reference point for the ratio? Every 2dB below the -20dB threshold it makes the signal even lower? In this case, the signal is 3dB below -20dB, so the final level would be -24.5dB? Sorry if this is getting too technical, but I love understanding the whole process. Thank you in advance!
Great video. Unfortunately I could not get the Semantic Audio Compressor to install. I watched your install Cakewalk plug-ins video too but even after trying the suggestions there it still would not work.
You da best!
But why there is no threshold control on Pro Channel Compressor in cakewalk?
Hi Mike Thanks for your Vid on compression. Could tell me what the knee nob dose, just basically. And Thank god for your videos cause I would not have a clue of any of this. Phil👍PS I cant believe this this DAW is free
I understand the explanation of what the makeup gain is actually doing now but thought the purpose of makeup gain was to make sure the volume coming out of the compressor was the same as going in. Then, just use the track volume to boost it overall. This way, if I change the compression later, I re-adjust the makeup gain to match the output to the input again (isn't this called gain staging btw?). Therefore, all plugins or devices down the chain would always get the same volume from the compressor and I wouldn't have to change them all. I still get more volume on the track, the character of the compressor, and no clipping. Even if what I am doing is not "wrong" was this not the intended purpose of the makeup gain? I want to make sure I'm thinking about the basics correctly.
I didn't got to upload the compressor to cakewalk, I've downloaded the file but it doesn't appear in the DAW's media. Any idea of what could I do?
Great video!! Did anyone have problems with the link to download the plugin? I cant seem to download it it shows an error code immediately. If so, any good alternatives? Also using cakewalk as a DAW.
It's all excellent and awesome, except...... there is no mentioning of the KNEE in compression, which is kinda important too. Thanks.
Yes, its a great tool, great for making the compression more gentle/transparent. However, in this video, I wanted to keep to the very basics, as people often find this subject confusing. Thanks for watching, and your feedback :)
@@CreativeSauce Thank you. Keep up the good work!
downloaded the plug in. unzipped it. added it to my vst plug in area in cakewalk. doesn't show up.... so frustrating..
the semantic link doesnt appear to be working
How do you load a song into cakewalk from your computer library. Help
Hello mate! ^^
I tried to install this in Cakewalk and it doesn't show up
Did you vocal comp your Tutorial? Your voice sounds like theres vocal thickening HAHA
