The BEST ever? NOT necessarily- there are other contenders- BUT UNDOUBTEDLY “AMONG” THE VERY BEST. Personally I am NOT always in the mood to be shaken to the depth of my emotional core- A REQUISITE for listening to Callas. Sutherland’s 1959 Lucia was revelational in the flawless brilliance of her astounding coloratura, the sheer beauty of which is a transformational experience - albeit in a manner COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from Callas.
"BRAVA.. MARIA CALLAS!" I never get tired of listening to this recording/performance. I would have loved to have been in the audience to experience the electricity in the air.
Thank you so much for the german subtitles. It was a pleasure for me, to listen to this particularly great recording. You don’t even need to see the stage design. The roles were all sung beautifully characteristically, credible and so captivatingly, that it was easy to visualize in your mind. Bravo!!!
Wonderful ! Who would be able to offer us such great rendition of this tragic opera ? Callas, Gobi, Di Stefano, the orchestra etc…… I have all these records but rediscovering this by a rainy end_afternoon …. What a pleasure !
Thanks, LOR, for this superb rendering by a superb cast, top to bottom, of one of my favorite operas. High marks, also, to the orchestra and, of course, to the conductor are due. I was hoping this was a live performance, but this studio recording is the best I've heard of this stellar opera from Puccini. Bonus credit to you for the subtitles you provide. L360C37/:-)
Splendid recording....great re- mastering of a 71 year old mono recording.....Gobbi is one of my favourite Scarpias from the old school, along side Lawrence Tibbett.
In lieu of this great recording the Callas Gobbi Di Stefano Tosca I will always consider it a great tragedy that they could never put together a staged production of Tosca Callas Gobbi Di Stefano. I know a reason for that is that Tosca was never a favorite role of Callas. She actually never sang a staged production of Tosca at La Scala this recording represents the only time she sang Tosca at La Scala.
This has been referred to by many as the greatest single recording of any opera. It's also interesting how Callas disliked this opera, and how it happened to be her first great success in Greece (where she stepped in for an indisposed soprano) and also her very last stage performance in 1965. I wonder why they chose a photo of her as Medea on this video.
I agree about the irony of Callas' feelings toward the opera. Then again, she also didn't like the sounds of her own voice. So, while a majestic, unequaled soprano (IMO), she might have been a sub-par judge. :) I will always associate her with this role, and with this recording of it. I'm not sure how many times I've listened to it over the decades, but it's A LOT! And that's even taking into consideration the fact that for a number of years there I had moved almost exclusively into a world dominated by Wagner! But there was still always time for Maria Callas, di Stefano, Gobbi, De Sabata, and La Scala. AFAIC, it just doesn't get any better than this.
I am afraid that there slipped an error in your introductory note: The orchestra is not the Philharmonia, but Milan La Scala. This is indeed perhaps the greatest Tosca recording of all time. I listen to it rarely, so as to prevent my sound system to catch fire...
I have a question I just started listening to this type of music. I find it really good really relaxing, very uplifting and happy it’s better than listening to ass and titties, guns, and drugs music how come no one sings the songs in English when I look for these songs and say English version. There’s no English version. They’re always English subtitles only.

Yep it’s up there

Gracias.

It's great to have this. Thank you. However, some of your notes above - the dramatis personae, for instance - are about Turandot, not Tosca.
vi è un errore di elenco del cast, quello menzionato si riferisce a Turandot !!!
You have listed the cast for Turandot, not Tosca.
The Tosca cast list is below that...keep scrolling.
Why are the cast members of a Turandot production listed in the description of this Tosca performance?
WHY are you using a photograph of Callas AS MEDEA in Tosca recording? There are many photos of Callas AS TOSCA!
I agree!! Photographs are important… But I don’t want one of you.
