This is one of the first operatic recordings that I ever bought, and on listening to it now I'm struck by how subtle, conversational and understated the performance is, especially from Callas and Gobbi. It feels more like the reading of a play, and the lack of verismo excess in the musical style renders it even more gripping and believable. One of the great monuments of recorded sound.

Callas was in fine voice in this recording, but why so few comments about di Stefano ? At this stage in his career he had one of the most beautiful lyric tenor voices ever, liquid gold in tone and so expressive too.He was Pavarotti's favourite tenor.

@@mcalos2814 Yes a good point and Callas had a special connection with her audience.I was fortunate enough to hear Renata Tebaldi sing Tosca at Covent Garden 1955 and Callas sing Tosca there in 1964.I think Tebaldi possessed one of the most beautiful lirico-spinto soprano voices of the last century, Callas sang with such passion and emotion, she became Tosca and whilst Tebaldi produced more beautiful notes, the performance by Callas is something I shall remember for the rest of my life.A different genre of music, but Judy Garland had the same ability as Callas to connect with an audience, sang with passion and emotion and acted her songs.I saw her in top form London Palladium 1960, like Callas, something I shall remember for the rest of my life. Also saw Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan live, both had beautiful voices, superior to Garland, but never received the mass adulation Garland had.Have a good day.Comments just my personal opinion.

Interpreti meravigliosi che qui SONO i personaghi, la Callas E' TOSCA, Di Stefano È CAVARADOSSI, Gobbi È SCARPIA. De Sabata magnifico. Mon dieu ! Quelle joie !

All the colors, and delicate emotive pianissimos, explosive fortes, and such a focus delicate vocal line. A completely open tbroat, no false darkening from the tongue like Sopranos today. Can we take a moment to appreciate how Angelo Mercuriali's Spoletta is also the very best you'll find out there? I'm mean, I HATE when the tenor just _sing_ very calmly Spoletta's final part, but he just SHOUTS out Tosca's fate. It is the only one who I believe would make me jump. This is why this recording is so amazing, Tosca is not the best opera ever, but they really paid attention to every single detail. Bravi tutti.

It takes a strong personality to portray heroic evil. Most singers have only strong voices! In drama, a comparable achievement to Tito Gobbi's charismatic Scarpia would be Laurence Olivier's Richard lll, also a sexual predator.

I have bought many other recordings since of Tosca and other opera's but nothing compares to this. Recommend this to anyone trying Opera for first time. Feel sorry for today's singer's and conductors
if they record this Opera absolutely no chance of them surpassing Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi and De Sabata. I suppose I spoiled it for myself hearing the greatest first but I wouldn't change things for the world it's a honour to listen to this much talent on one recording.

Gobbi, grande, in one of the roles he succeeded. Di Stefano é sempre magnifico, uno dei miei favoriti tenori, even when I can't stand the characters like this one. De Sabata and the orchestra: the glorious days of La Scala. If you can't feel an Opera, then it is a failure.
