  • Hey guys, in this video I am comparing the EMG 81 and EMG 81X, both in bridge position of my Charvel Model 5A.
Here are the amp models used for the sound.
    Clean: Fender Twin Reverb
    Crunch: Friedman BE-OD 100
High Gain: Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier
    Lead: Mesa Boogie Mark IV
There is some difference between the 2, the EMG 81X has less output and low end, with more treble to my ears, and more dynamic.
(EMG 81’s clean is not bad I would say)
Both are great but personally I just prefer the EMG 81 for metal.

I've never heard this sort of clean tone from an 81. Sounds terrific.

I love the X series pickups much more than the regular ones.

81x look little bit of passive pickup but 81 is full shape tone. I was play 81 & 85 more than 20 years and still love it.

The 81X is more richer in details. More "colorful" meanwhile the sounds are more separated as well. Interesting pickup.

This was such a great video. You can hear the difference so easily.
81s still excel in the fast paced, hi gain stuff.
And the 81xs seem more like passive pickups in every other aspect.
    Thanks for creating and posting!

Both pickups sound great. I have an 81TW/89 set in a strat and love it. I'd consider the 81X or TWX in the future but I'm happy with what I have now. I just let the amps do the heavy lifting and I'm always switching amps. As soon as I think I have the right amp for a gig I either sell or trade it or a friend lets me borrow an amp. EMGs are some of the best pickups out there for rock, blues, jazz, metal, anything. They are also extremely well made.

Great review, Simple, objective and covering the most common tones, with a very clarity sound.
The only thing "bad" is that the "hi gain" sound is with low volume.
Which mic you used on amps to record them? SM57?

Riff1: good volume, only the necessary.
0:07 and 0:32. The EMG 81x sounds to be a bit louder than 81. Were the amp at same volume on both?
      0:21 ~ 0:30 and 0:47 ~ 0:54 | 1:16 ~ 1:30 and 1:49 ~ 2:07 you waited the note sound until the end, to we check the sustain! Geat!

I heard that the 81X makes the 18-27V mod not as necessary, but the 81 seems to sound good for cleans; Blackouts are too bright though.

hi bro.. which one would you recomend it has clarity sound and punch attack?

Hey bro, the 81 and 81X has similar sound, but the 81X has less bass and output which helps on better clarity. But I find myself still prefer the 81, which still has great clarity(under profer gain) and the aggressiveness I go for. Both are great as you may use different guitar which sounds different, so it kind of depends on what gear you're using, either would be fine, but I'd still go for the 81. Hope this helps.

So actives are trying to sound passive while passive try to sound like actives. Am I the only one noticing this? The x series is trying to be more open like a passive. The het set is the same and so was the 57 and 66. Then you have the crazy bare knuckle pickups lol.

active pickups have a better signal, and paasive pickups dont need a battery. so theres always gonna be some people with mixed feelings, thats why

@@hawshimagical people should shut the fuck up about the batteries. I've never heard an EMG or Fishman owner complain about battery life. Just don't leave your guitar plugged in while you're not using it. So simple
