In this Sad But True guitar lesson video I will demonstrate how to play this killer slow grooving song by Metallica in it's entirety.
When it comes to Metallica's sound and style, "Sad But True" was a big departure. First off, Metallica usually tunes to standard tuning most of the time and are a lot more well known for their lightning fast thrash riffs than for slow power grooves.
However, with "Sad But True" they decided to break the mold and did so with outstanding results. Personally, this main riff to "Sad But True" is probably my all-time favorite Metallica riff. The groove is just simply infectious.
The tuning that Metallica employs in "Sad But True" is called D standard. What that tuning calls for is for you to tune every string on your guitar down one whole step. So the tuning will now be D G C F A D. This low tuning is a huge aspect in creating the deep grooving sound of "Sad But True".
The main riff itself uses a combination of thick palm muted power chords and open string pull-offs. It is actually rather simple to play once you get it under your fingers. The most important aspect in mastering this riff is to make sure you lock into the groove. The feel of the riff is just as important as the notes, especially with a slow power groove feel like "Sad But True" has.
The entire first video lesson will be dedicated to a precise breakdown of the main riff and all of the variations they play on it.
In the second video lesson I will demonstrate how to play all of the rest of the rhythm guitar parts found in "Sad But True". There are still more killer grooves to play here. The song just seems to flow so well with those thick hypnotic grooves.
Also, in the second video you will find the harmony guitar section. It is a little instrumental section that happens right before the main guitar solo. I will show you how to play both harmony parts.
In the last lesson I will teach you a note-for-note breakdown of Kirk Hammett's awesome guitar solo. This solo has a lot of SRV style double-stops, fast legato licks, fast alternate picked pentatonics and more! Also, there is a little extension to this solo that occurs a little bit later. After the main guitar solo ends they go back to the chorus. After that chorus ends the guitar solo comes back in for a quick little SRV inspired series of licks. Make sure you don't miss it! :)
I would put the difficulty level of "Sad But True" at around the upper-intermediate level so hopefully there will be many players out there willing to try and learn it. Even the guitar solo is played at a relatively moderate tempo compared to other Kirk Hammett solos.
Hope you guys enjoy it!
Carl...
Can we just appreciate the fact that he is the best RUclips teacher

@@sam.graff_7158 no lol
he's not really that accurate
First person I've seen play the chorus like Hetfield does. Great job and love the lesson :)
Indeed everybody fuck up the chorus!
Carl. I’d like to invite you to a “shred-off” at my house. The losers humiliation is to take guitar lessons from the winner. You in?😂
Damn, was hoping i could learn Kirks riff in the chorus.
Thanks so much who ever gave the 599 other likes, Ive been waiting on this Carl, thank you so much for completing the riffs on this song , Im not one of those talented players I have to really practice alot even on the smallest slowest part lol to get it right and the way you break the song down makes it very easy for me to learn and practice the parts. thank you once again .
I REALLY TRIED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WERE YOU DOIN THERE AT THE VERSE BUT I COULD NOT FIGUTRE IT OUT IF SOMEONE COULD HELP THAT'D BE GREAT 3:53
E power chords with heavy palm muting or that what it looks like to me
Thank you so much for this amazing lesson I checked other tutorials and saw many mistakes in them but this tutorial is ULTIMATE!
i was not able to figure out what they are playing in the chorus. I nearly quit this song. But here i found the right way to play. Thank you so much. Great Teacher a and great lesson!!!!!!!!
Yep..you can’t hear the 2nd part of the chorus clearly in the song so it’s hard to get the damn timing down once you’re actually shown the notes.
Seriously bro..your an excellent guitar teacher. Thank you for your time and energy. You have a lot of students out there my friend.
Wish you the best
The riff while Kirk play the solo missing :(
true but its very easy . I ve learned it by ear.
Ive Been playing that chorus wrong forever. Damn this way sounds a billion times better. Thanks again
They actually recorded 7 guitars on the album, that’s why it sounds so heavy and full
@Winters 69
And a baritone was tracked on the low e string parts on the famous riff. It was tuned an octave lower and distorted
Hey Carl, I really appreciate that you did a lesson for this song, since I've been wanting to learn it for a long time. The only thing that sort of bothers me is that I didn't see you doing the lead lick in the chorus that (I think) Kirk does. Will you do it in another lesson, or will I just have to be satisfied with this? :D
This is so cool! Im a beginner, but you explained the whole song so well. Great Stuff.
Thank You so much. You Rock \m/
I’m pretty sure that Jason did play a five string bass for this song, so that why it’s sounds lower.
Thank you, Carl!
This is good, thank you
This man beats the absolute shit out of his strings
Edit: Typo
perfect,, thats cool
Dude... the guitar tones you get are just fucking magnificent!
Thanks for all the Metallica lessons Carl. :)

Bardown Ravioli it's rare now that a 13 year old even acknowledges Metallica anymore so age has every little thing to do with it lol
yeah I'm 12 and you wrote that 2 years ago lol
I was 4 when I first heard Metallica. 15 years later still my favorite band
I’m 9 and I love Metallica
@@juicyjoe5668 my dad introduced me to it when I was little, but I literally thought it was loads of noise and I didn't like it. Last year I thought I'd learn One, it seemed easy and it was my dad's favourite. Then I kept learning them... Now I'm here, a twelve year old, playing all this stuff and blowing my mother's ears off😂.
But nine... That's a young age.
i cant find part 1 /:

Thanx carl, what guitar effect did you use for this?
Well no hate but i have just started and i don’t know what powerchords are and you won’t say how to do powerchords and NOWHERE do they explain things better than here
This is the wrong place to start learning if u just started... go actually learn guitar basics first
