My NV5600 was getting more and more difficult to shift. It was time to do a fluid change. Used a TDS PTO cover to get another quart in the transmission and used a mix of redline oils to help with shifting.
I have always taken the shifter tower off and dumped 6 quarts in. Towing 17,000 almost daily and the trans lasted 549,000 original miles. Actually going to be changing the fluid today. I've been using Pennzoil Syncromesh and the cause of the failure was 6th gear finally exploded taking out most of the other gears in the trans.
I've always drains from the bottom PTO bolt and filled through the shifter tower
I have definitely done the same. This just makes that this much easier.
You should never pull heavy loads in 6th gear (it's very small) according to people that rebuild the NV5600. Cummins also says to keep the rpms over 1900 when pulling a heavy load because if you go below 1900 rpms harmonic vibrations will damage the drivetrain gears.

Okay… Do all H.O. Cummins come with the 4.10 rear end? Our Ram was ordered with 4.10 rear end. The owners manual rates it at 20,000 lb tow rating. It’s running at about 2000 + RPMs at 55 MPH. I down shift to speed up but use 6th to cruise. I’ll be running 2600 RPMs if I use 5th gear. The gear ratios for 1st and 5th gear (NV4500) and 1st and 6th gear (NV5600) are the same. By the way I use 6 quarts of Pennzoil sycromesh.
Don’t “you should never” a guy that got 550k miles out of his tranny. Clearly you are just another guy spewing bullshit online. Take a walk bud
@@guesswhooldtimer2358my 01 ho truck has 3.55 gears from the factory.
Just did this exact thing what a difference is smoothness of shifting
I'mma give it a try. Shifting from 4th to 5th is painful and also to 6th. These things are built like tanks. Hoping this will prevent a rebuild but I will if necessary. Could be a rear bearing.
Hi Bryan, This is Dale with TDS. Good video, but why are the bolts not recessed? They are supposed to be below the surface. I assume they are not all tightened down?
I was not done, torquing them down
Bryan, when you say shifting was a pain, was it hard to get into gear? Or occasiionaly griding? Or both
Both. But more getting in gear.
@@BryanHansen I've owned mine since new and they can be hard to get into gear .
This video is two years old are you still satisfied with the results?
Yes actually.
Is that MTL stuff synchromesh??
I just changed my clutch to a dual disc valair and it is shifting even harder. I used penzoil synchromesh in Jan and I think I was reading to use synchromesh and some kind of anti slip which I don’t have.
Anyways I read everywhere if you don’t use synchromesh you will eat up the brass or bronze synchroze.
So just curious if it is a synchromesh and if it’s not how has the trans been holding up?
It is synchromesh. Trans is doing great!
I've squeezed 8 quarts of penzoil syncromesh in my NV5600 without any leak of the back seal. Difference between 6 quarts and 8 quarts is unreal. With 8 quarts gears work like in passenger car nice and smooth.
How did you get 8 quarts in?
@@victoroneill7924 same as you fill 6 quarts, by the selector coz filling plug is at the height of about 4½ quarts if I'm right.
8 quarts is just enough to bottom flood output bearing so it holds lubrication all time and there is no any leak out the seal.
Why didn’t you just drill and tap,a new fill hole in the original cover plate and add a pipe plug?
Definitely an option. The cover plates are quite thin so drilling tapping and welding a plug-in would require some Finesse, For the price of the cover plate it was worth it for me to just buy one
Thanks, have a great day!
What kind of clutch do you have because I have a dual disc and since it has been installed I hate it its always hard to get it in gear I'm to the point to go back to oem clutch
Luk Gold. It’s a semi ceramic I believe. It’s not hoppy but is hard shifting. The fluid change definitely helped.
@@BryanHansen thank you sir I may go ahead and try that if it doesn't work I'm going back to oem clutch
Is it the change in fluid level or different fluid that makes the difference?
The change in fluid, but for a long time a shortcoming of that transmission was starving it for fluid
Where’d you get that hand pump?
Amazon amzn.to/3IRDjHW
Is that oil safe for the synchros? They are bronze or brass I believe.. I've read some oils aren't safe for them.
Did this help?
It did! I actually did find part of a broken gear tooth when I was in there, but I had to fill it back up anyway and had been running it for who knows how long with that piece chipped. It does shift a lot smoother than it had. Wish I would have done it a long time ago.
I’ll spend $400.00 dollars on another set of Fass coolers again, before I buy a $100.00 deluxe PTO cover for 1 quart when you really need more than that and can just as easily pour in via the shift tower.
How many quarts do you need need?
@@johnnymorenojr8539
6 quarts of Pennzoil synchromesh. I believe there is no Factory recommended change interval. I have change ours when the clutch got replaced.
