The 208 meter long US warship USS New York (LPD-21) was a guest at the Kiel naval base for the first time. The New York took part in the BALTOPS 2024 maneuver in the Baltic Sea this year and, coming from the Baltic Sea, reached the Kiel Fjord on June 21, 2024 and a short time later reached the Kiel naval base. BALTOPS is a multinational exercise that has taken place annually in the Baltic Sea since 1971. It is organized by the United States Navy.
The USS New York (LPD-21) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy. The Avondale Shipyard used 6.8 tons of steel in the bow of the USS New York, which came from the rubble of the World Trade Center. The ship was commissioned in New York City on November 7, 2009. Her home port was initially Naval Station Norfolk and since December 2013 has been Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville. Since 2020, the New York's home port has again been at Naval Station Norfolk.
