- This weekend I attended a family violence conference with over 150 men from around New Zealand. Phil Paikea, Vic Tamati and the safe man safe family team are an organisation that travels New Zealand spreading hope and awareness about family and sexual violence.

I grew up in a violent home. My dad was not a nice person. I was determined to have a real home for my children. I love him for teaching me what to not be as an adult. It is so good to see so many come together to break the chains from their past. Stay strong, spread love.

Inspirational to see their courage in trying to turn their lives around from some of the darkest upbringings and not giving up, makes you appreciate life a bit more i reckon.

I commend each of you for taking the time to come together to heal, to restore, to forgive, and to move forward in a positive and light. None of us can change the Past, it's happened. However, we can change our Future. Show our children our mokopuna that there is Hope, Faith and Positivity in our homes, our lives. Life is a challenge, and it may seem like an endless battle with temptation out there, peer pressure, and the cost of living. All these pressures and stresses amount up, and they're real! Having Safe Men, Safe Families is amazing. Thank you. Building strong Men, Dad's, Koro's to be an inspiration to their whānau, Hapū and Iwi. I broke the cycle when my tamariki came into this world and its not easy to change old habits and what we have been brought up with, but its worth it in the long run. I was brought into this world with a mother that was in a coma with me in your stomach from my biological dad iv meet twice and I’m actually glad this is the case because it made me a better person. Two years later my mother met a very toxic narcissistic person who was in my life for years to come who didn’t know how to love us and showed in blood and tears, this documentary made me go back to that time and one of them was when I would have been around 7 years old and got put out in the dog kennel to sleep the night and the only way to keep warm was to cuddle them ( Staffordshire terrier) I’m seating he trying to think what I must have done wrong 🤷🏻 wtf. I am a very strong independent person to date. 40 years old with a lot going for me. Not here for gratitude. I feel for people who have been in my situation. I really felt for the lady with short hair you are so beautiful and powerful I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for you

I was a 60's child in NZ born into a violent /drinking family my dad beat us kids daily wait until your father gets home type my mum always said ----- i to tried to get away from things running away living in the plantations ---i was a drunk
/ druggie do to others what my so called father did to me ended up inside a few times etc but i broke the cycle i was in but i still have that chip on my shoulders those memories will not go away what i remember my brother and sisters remember is always with us
