Today Luke is reviewing his favorite backpacking/GPS app which is called AllTrails. This is what he personally uses for his adventures and has been in testing for a full year now.
    Link : www.alltrails....
    Cost : Free limited Version ; $2.50 a month, $30 a year, Lifetime $100
This is my second year of using this app and I was able to renew for $20 thanks to a promotion email which I received.
Available on : Apple and Android - I’ve only used it on IOS so I can’t comment on the Android part.
Who this is for : Hiker, Backpacker, Trail Runner, even Mountain Biker
This is an extremely popular app for a good reason; it’s awesome!
On IOS alone it has an average rating of 4.9 with over 67K+ ratings!

I love AllTrails. I’m in the UK and it’s great to map your own trails on the desktop version of AllTrails, then your new trail is available on the app once synced.
Great video Luke. Love your work and thanks for sharing

Thank you!! Thank you!!!. I have been researching and researching like crazy trying to find trails in my area. I couldn't find much of anything. I was becoming very discouraged. Then....in one fell swoop....i find this video. I downloaded the all trails app. BAM!! Suddenly it listed all these trails around me. The biggest surprise was about a trail I had been hiking which was 2.5 miles, the longest I could find, was actually 5.5 miles. The map showed where I had been missing out. LOVE IT!!. Thank you so much for posting this. It is extremely helpful.

Thumbs up for this review. I first downloaded the app Trailforks but had trouble figuring it out and couldn't find a useful RUclips tutorial. I'm a total newby. After listening to this review I downloaded "AllTrails" and I was instantly up and running. Thanks.

Thank you to ALL of the technicians who invented the smart phone! Great review, Luke. I love this app and others I use for planning adventures. All Trails is my favorite (android version) along with Guthook, GAIA, WAZE and there's another one I use but its name escapes me. It provides several useful tools such as a compass, flashlight, etc. Before the advent of smart phones I had to do mountains of research to find information, directions, maps and so on even just to plan a simple hike. My first few years of hiking maps actually were hand-drawn from our family's set of encyclopedias, either Collier or Britannica. Some of you out there are probably saying WTF?! For decades I used reference materials at home, local libraries and stores like Dick's to acquire information. Now I pick up my S10e, go to All Trails and within seconds I have nearly all the information I need. Did I ever thank the technicians who invented the smart phone?

I've had the free version for about 5 years and it probably kept us from spending a cold night out after we got off trail while dayhiking the Pinhoti. We were able to get back on trail and made it to the car about 30 minutes before sunset. I just upgraded to PRO yesterday after finding out that it offers a way to let someone know where I am. This is a great feature!

Great review! I've been using the free version for about a year and was happy with it. I just upgraded to Pro last week because I really like the idea of downloading a map for offline use. I watched another AllTrails video that showed me how to create my own map, as well as print it! Can't wait to use those features on my next Adirondacks trip

Great review… thanks! I’m using the Pro version and love the Heat Map overlay. Apparently it records the use of trails that haven’t been published by capturing (presumably) the tracking data from other users. It’s great for showing alternate routes, cut-offs, cut-backs, and spurs just in case you want to modify your route. I’m not sure if this feature can be used without cell service. It’s really useful to answer questions like “can I cut back to the trail head on this branch” or “I wonder if that spur can get me to the lake, river, whatever”

I have been using Alpine Quest (for android) for some years now, and it has all the features i ever heard about that can be found on a GPS app or device (except sending SOS messages and SMS in places without regular mobile network coverage, which i think you only find on GPS devices, and not GPS apps...). Its a relatively cheap (maybe $20) one time purchase (none of that "subscription" stuff), and have a pretty decent selection of maps to choose from. Including a bunch of the "Google Maps" (which i think is the only one that is NOT downloadable), various Bing Maps, open topography maps, hikebike map, and various other maps. You can also "layer" several maps, and choose the opacity, so you have your favorite map as a base, and add other layers like "terrain", "heights", "hillshade layer", or "slopes". There is also a "track recorder" function which enables you to record the trail you are on, and export it as a GPX file or whatever, so you can store them for later, or share them with friends. If you use the track recorder, it will show how far the trail is, as well as all kinds of detailed information about the speed and elevation...

Thanks for the great review. I definitely like the social aspect and rating on this app. I'm using Gaia GPS for a bit more personalizing of my routes, however. While hiking, I can leave markers on the currently recorded trail to indicate water sources, potential camp spots, and many other important things. It also lets me plot my own trail on the fly or ahead of the trip (on the phone and web). I've used that aspect many times, and not only for hiking. It came in handy when driving in another country without activating roaming for cellphone service, or as a backup when driving on dirt roads where I knew there will not be any phone service. I can also create folders of saved Information (downloaded trails from other hikers, my own recorded trails, waypoints, photos). I have a folder for each climbing area that I visit frequently, for instance. Another great thing is the many different map layers that are available, such as nautical and aviation maps, cycle maps, an Appalachian Trail map (you might like that one, Luke), historical maps, US public land, National Geographics maps, just to name a few. Needless to say, I love this app, but I will give AllTrails a try, perhaps as a companion app :)

  • @dash8465
    @dash8465 3 года назад

Depending on where and how far you venture, take note that relying on a cellphone for remote navigation is not the best idea...
Cellphones are delicate, battery runs down quickly using gps, and they really dont like water - *always* have a quality map & compass (learn to use them first) and/or a truly outdoors worthy backup device. Backup could be as simple as a Garmin etrex 10 preloaded with your trip on up to a Fenix 6 watch that is fully capable of route planning with its built in map.
If you hike with someone else their phone can be a back up, but preload the app/maps/route on it too and power down and protect one of them in zip lock and padded pocket/pouch.
Do not rely on a Apple watch as a backup even if your particular app will work without the phone; again.. short battery life, the apps lack details and you can't reroute.
I plan on my phone and computer using whichever app has the best detail and mapping for the area, then export the gpx file to my Fenix using Connect, close all apps on the phone and put it in airplane mode so that it'll last 2 days. I bring an Anker 10000mah if I'm out for longer.
I rarely look at the phone because the watch is so capable.

another problem is that on a remote hike you get home and go on desktop to view waypoint photos--but nothing is there. Turns out when you get back home use cell phone and sign back on and click on the recorded trail THEN the pictures come through since it uploads them. What is the problem? why dont they tell people that since I have contacted them before about it--I finally figured out what was going on.

The trail line on the screen is too narrow. Wish it was more bold. Is there a way to download area maps, not just one trail at a time? The user interface is clearly focused on 'one trail at a time' which is not good for my type of trips.

If I want to go for a day or multi day hike instead of going on line and taking forever to find a trail, I can put in my wants for a hike and a radius and bam it gives me all the trails within that radius.

The "53" is the number of people that have reviewed the trail not a rating. Usually review sites have a number so that you can tell if the star rating is a more general opinion or waited heavily towards the opinion of a couple of people. I suspect you already knew this and you just misspoke, but that mistake made me cringe a little bit when I heard it. Great review otherwise.

Good review Lucas...have tried it...not thrilled with the subscription model....looks like a lot of info for the pro version, but pricey. I use MyTrails Pro, which has a one time fee, but does not offer all that trail info...not much of a trail hiker though, in general. Gaia GPS also has the subscription model, which I am trying for a year. If it's really good...$100.00 once and done might be worth the price. I always carry a hard copy backup as well. Backcountry Navigator is one I use as well. By the way Luke...are you left handed? Thanks

be aware that the concept of all trails is good however they are in a state of apparent collapse and using a desktop computer for instance you cannot add photos after from a good camera. Many of the features barely work and its almost impossible to contact support-I have full blown pro. The recording of your route works good even with no phone reception however afterwords to go on desktop and add REAL pictures not cell phone is almost impossible. click 'add photos" the plus mark--browse to upload--shows the photo--BUT PAGE IS DEAD and does not work--nothing is there you cannot upload it. no upload button no done--nothing. no choice but to close it and photo or photos are not there.

    • @jaysilverheals4445
      @jaysilverheals4445 3 года назад

also they dropped the ball in that the trail just done does not show "views" nor allow commenting thumbs up thumbs down nothing. no interaction with others. comments such as on youtube are the big thing yet they have no idea to improve and if an app comes up with that they will be overtaken. huge best feature is if you see a spot you are going to not just follow a common trail which I never do--you can click in a few lines and create the trail or the endpoint of interest. when you arrive you click on it during the hike and you simply navigate your dot to the location however you want to get there. makes no difference phone reception or not. best feature by far since I hike heavily exclusively in the very remote desert southwest.
good app and thats what I use however they are missing basic improvements and are frozen in time.

This app for the most part has just about every Trail unlike you I actually did find a couple of trails in my area that the map did not have. That being said due to the ease of access it was easy for me to upload track my progress and give them the trail that was missing which is way different than any other app I've ever used.

If your phone loses signal then it has no GPS. So what good is it? Yes, this is a question because this does not make sense to me. My Garmin uses real satellites for positioning, not cell towers. I have been in the mountains in a whiteout snow storm and phone GPS dropped out. But my GPS for the car never skipped a beat. So It is a real question I am asking.

So I am a new hiker and have only used the app a few times after a recommendation and I would answer both parts of your question as yes. You don’t need to use any additional equipment, just your phone and it’s very precise. It shows a clear and accurate red line depicting the trail with arrows showing which way to go and a gps marker for your phone in real time. My friend and I actually went off the trail once by mistake and it helped us get back. I’ve seen a “pro” feature will automatically notify you if that happens but I haven’t tried pro yet.

I haven't been able to replace my dedicated GPS unit with a cell phone. It seems that my GPS always outperforms phones in accuracy. Also, I value the ability to be able to export my tracks (in a .gpx format) for use on caltopo.com and other sites. I don't know of many phone apps that allow exporting tracks in the .gpx format. All Trails looks like a great product for the casual hiker who is into social media, but I'm not convinced that it is a full-on replacement for a dedicated GPS.

I am a pro user and do love this app. However you mentioned the ability to measure a distance of how far you have to go on the trail based on the apps ability to tell you your current precise location. I have not been able how to figure out how to do that while recording a hike? Are you only able to do that if you are using a map you have downloaded? Or is there a way to measure real time distance to a particular waypoint while recording a hike? Thank you for your informative video!

Okay, Luke, that was a great review of the AllTrails App. But, I became confused when you said certain maps were for pros. What pros?

Agree it's a great app. What it really needs instead of faux Facebook "friends" garbage is a forum where people can ask advice about trails and gear and favorite RUclips channels 🤓 I suspect the company knows that, but running and moderating a forum is a big task with some big legal downsides, especially if people tell other people to climb Everest in shorts and an Old Navy sport shirt like you're wearing here. 🤣

I have this app on my phone but have not had the occasion to use it. I hope to do so soon. If you ever have the opportunity to go to Cade's Cove west of Pigeon Forge, TN, go on the Abrams Falls trail. Well worth the time. Don't start it after 3pm in the spring or fall since it'll be dark by the time you get back to your vehicle. We went in the spring (prime dehibernation time for black bears) and my family and I were extremely paranoid coming back, since nightfall was coming on while we hiked back. Beautiful views, to be sure, from the highest point of the trail; you could see the river on both sides of the ridge at its peak. The sun was starting to set and it was a gorgeous view, and me w/o a camera. Oh, well.
I do appreciate the detail on the app, even the free version. I hope to use it soon.

Gaia GPS will automatically charge me through Apple each year unless I let them know not to charge me within 24 hours of being charged. Who is going to remember after a year. I won't be getting a membership from them. I will try AllTrails,
