@@davidbeppler3032 assuming the battery in a tesla will actually last 30 years, none have yet, that's exactly my point. It's only 30 years, my diesel landcruiser is already 32 years old and shows no sign of giving up any time soon, another 10 years shouldn't be a problem, I'm hoping for 20, which could easily see me out. Another issue is total running cost. I don't do a lot of km per year now days so even if I only had to chip in an extra 30k for a tesla (probably more), the extra finance cost even at only 5% is about twice my current fuel cost. For me it just doesn't stack up.

Videos have influence. About 5 odd years ago I had been considering an EV to replace my aging ice car. I was in no hurry to make the replacement, my car was older but in reasonable shape but the writing was on the wall so I started to investigate all the choices out there. After watching so many educational videos about the pros and epic cons of EVs, I have made my decision and have purchased a brand new ice Corolla. My new car is remarkably uncomplicated to operate and re-fuel, I'm confident that I'll squeeze at least 20 years use out of it, and I feel perfectly safe leaving it in my garage overnight.

It's been so cheap & trouble free to own. I just love that 'old' car! It wouldn't be safe. The large battery operates at ~300 volts so it's much safer to use a 12 volt system to open and close the high voltage system's circuits. A DC to DC step down converter is used to charge the 12 volt battery and keep the 12 volt electronics powered up. That said, I don't know why they don't include some kind of emergency joule thief circuit to temporarily boost the voltage of a nearly depleted 12 volt battery just enough to close the high voltage battery shutter and engage the step down converter.

The factory itself is privately owned but financed by european and canadian tax payers money, just around 12 BILLION has been spent on the factory. Even with all this free money the factory cannot even provide its workers with adequate protection gear which killed a 25 year old man in november 2023, he caught on fire while working with flammable substances, without fire-resistant work clothes. Northvolt was also exposed for illegaly storing 300 TONS of liquid hazmats in used oil drums. Copper foil was also found to be ”spread by the wind” as it was not stored at all.

Good luck going back to an ICE vehicle if you put 80 or 90% of that EV on finance, as many brand new EV models are losing 50% of its value as soon as you drive out of the showroom! I guess with ICE and Hybrid much cheaper than an EV, then downgrading should work. But if you are forced to sell, then you will have no car and still owe many $$$!

The problem with batteries is , you cannot certify when a chemical reaction will stop.
No one has a crystal ball.
    The other problem is,
A car is not like a torch you can just unscrew the cap and replace the defective or worn out batteries.
To power a motor vehicle you need hundreds or thousands of batteries which makes the battery pack enormous and immensely heavy.
And because you have such a massive battery pack with an enormous energy potential and such weight , the batteries to prevent contact issues have to be extremely sound in their mounting, hence the battery pack carrier has to be built like a tank and making any work to a battery pack a big operation that is very laborious.
The batteries which don’t like extremes of temperature have to be climate controlled , the batteries are also sensitive to having incorrect charging rates and so need battery management.
Insurance companies have no choice but to write EV cars off if there is even slight damage to a battery pack or even a mark on the battery pack because there is no telling if the batteries may have sustained any problem with the internal structure of the battery pack that could cause a problem later without pulling the entire battery pack apart to see any potential damage, then of course the whole assembly with thousands of batteries has to be re assembled which of course add the possibility that something may not put back together correctly requiring the pack to be removed and disassembled again .
EVs have only one main problem, they run on a huge complex battery pack that must be protected at all costs.
Anyone with some mechanical experience could tell you this was and always will be a problem with very complex battery powered vehicles.
The notion that EVs are simple is an absolute joke and one often peddled by marketing and sales persons 😊.

Can confirm the same thing happens with at least some PHEV's where the 12v battery will die if the thing is not left plugged in. Which kind of defeats the entire argument for a PHEV being a better option. Go ICE or regular hybrid.

And yes, if the 12v battery is flat, or too low to power the 12v systems properly, the contactors which connect either the motors or the charger port to the traction battery. On a related note, also seen Outlander PHEVs where the relays stick and make it impossible to charge on a standard charger after using a rapid one.

ICE cars never reach the economy figures that are claimed, these are obtained under perfect conditions.
So why should we expect EV's to be any better ?
As the battery ages and depending on the temperature the range they can cover will vary .
Never believe manufactureers claimed figures for anything that you buy.

Apparently it failed while away overseas and on his return it was completely dead to the point he couldn’t even open the doors .
The AA said after getting him going again that the battery was done and needed replacement but after a call to Nottingham Porsche he discovered that the battery replacement was going to cost £2500 ( don,t you just love Porsche tax ) .

The big problem: loading up the EVs with 12 volt "appliances" -things like the Cell link to the mothership that will drain the battery. And normally that would be off while parked, but that's a past tense thing... 24x7 monitoring kills the 12 volt system quickly... and a brit reports that the 12 volt in his Taycan won't hold while out of town for 2 weeks... and they want $1000 pounds or whatever to replace it after a year and a half...

Software stops charging the 12v battery when the main battery drops below 21%. It also stops all other things like security cameras, climate control and main battery temperature monitoring to conserve the main battery.
Maintenance of the 12v system for ICE vehicles only occurs when the engine basically turns. Regardless of what vehicle you drive once you rectify the 12v, that is connect another source in parallel, you can then go if everything else is good.

It is charged by the high voltage battery .

I have seen numerous videos on "Towtruck_Dustin" where he's had to tow EV's due to the 12v being flat. Being an EV, you can't force their drive wheels as it can cause fires / damage apparently.

That accident seems like a typical panic reaction to me, you can see videos of many such accidents on the internet. The driver probably wanted to brake as he was rolling down the slope, but accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal because he mixed up the pedals. When the car started accelerating strongly and unexpectedly, the driver panicked and pressed the accelerator pedal even harder, as he thought he was pressing the brake, so he drove into the house at full throttle.
