  • Over a period of 18 months, we see two families evicted by their private landlords, trapped for over a year in a homeless hostel, and sofa-surfing with friends and family for months on end.
Throughout this ordeal, eleven-year-old Ellie and ten-year-old JJ remain cheerful and resilient, trying to see what they are going through as an adventure that they will one day look back on and laugh about - when they finally have a home they can call their own once again.

Absent fathers who leave their kids are the scum of the earth. I absolutely would never ever leave my kids. Children need their daddy to provide, protect, and prepare them for the real world. These single mothers try to raise them like a mother but there's no way a mother can ever replace daddy. Jobs are difficult to find and men often don't get along with a woman but that's no excuse to abandon the children. A real man will do whatever it takes to provide for his children even when life is difficult.

@Nadine SchneiderThe results of bad choices or lack of planning always end up falling on the women. Break that cycle and take responsibility; use birth control, limit your children to one instead of a liter, try to get an education. It's not just the mens fault; women have to take responsibility for their carelessness. Yes, having more than one child with no steady income, education, home, stability is carelessness. The children are the one being effected. Men should use condoms, however, if they don't then us women need to stop and take responsibility or move on. Here in the states, fathers or non custodial parents, often are paying all they can, and still get threatened with jail, because they are charged too much, yet, the fathers who don't pay anything are always getting away. Society has a tendency to blame the mother for everything when she's a single mom, and hardly anyone says anything about where is the dad, or, why is she a single mom to begin with (a lot of women I know are single moms because of domestic violence),and why wasn't he there for her or the kids? Children often don't understand the cost of something, or the reason why things cost money.
We have young adults in America today who appear to not understand these things at all...

What a couple of amazing kids Ellie and JJ are! They've managed to remain calm, accepting of their situation and thriving in spite of the turmoil. I think these two have great futures ahead of them. This video was so sad, all the way through. Even getting their home finally made me skeptical - they can so easily be evicted again at the whim of a private landlord. The hostels are a godsend, but much could be done to make them more appealing when a family has to stay for months or years on end. The children have nothing to do. Are there no community centres in these boroughs where the kids could go after school to play, do crafts, maybe have a choir or dancing lessons? To be trapped endlessly in the too-small space of their hostel rooms is torture for them and for their mothers who never get a break from it, who never can have a babysitter for a couple of hours to go for a walk or have tea in a quiet cafe. No mother in that situation can keep her cool all the time. How is it that the fathers of these children can just walk away without the courts chasing them down to get child support from them? How is it that the families of these men abandon the ex-wife and kids as well? If those were my grandchildren and my son had walked away from them, I would be as involved as possible with the kids. There's obviously many sets of grandparents in England who have lost touch with their grandchildren simply because they walked away from the family when their sons walked away.

The system in the UK is notoriously bad. Men can just say they're self-employed and give their earnings in as very low...then they order the men to pay pathetic figures like five pounds per week. Other men might be abusive and the women scared to chase them for money.

I think the same thing. It takes two to make a baby. In the US women are losing the rights over their own bodies. Women cant have an abortion in a couple states without having the death penalty, whether: they were raped, incest, health problems, cancer, never wanted to be a mother, and so many other reasons why. There are so many single mothers and no one goes after the guy for child support or nothing. Men will never take responsibility for their actions but they will always look down on the mothers who have no choice but to take care of their kids because if she put them in foster care they would say it's because she was a bad mom when she isn't.

It is always the children who suffer, but thankfully Mom has not bailed! We sometimes grew up stacked in a bedroom, but we never were worried, it was normal for us. It wasn't fancy, but it was warm and it was home for us. We grew up secure in knowing we had a warm and clean place to live. Some of our friends were living 7 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment, and they also grew up thriving, productive and even becoming a political leader. They ate a lot of Irish soda bread and jam, but the food was always there and the hospitality was amazing.

The maturity levels of J.J. & Ellie is so disheartening. You can definitely see the impact that homelessness has on children and how they cope in society. I hope both these families are able to secure a permanent home filled with happy memories to come. Please follow-up so we may continue to follow their lives.

After watching a few of these documentaries, I am left a bit confused. It seems to mainly be women ( although I am sure there are times it is men, and often times both parents work.) that once the relationship ends, are left without assistance from the ex-partner. Are there child support laws in the U.K., and how are they enforced. This is NOT a birth control issue but a responsibility issue. My second observation is that I have noticed some partners who do get assistance from the council sometimes bring in a partner who is not eligible for assistance. Where are the checks and balances in the system?
