My mum was really honest with me but she did it in the right way, she didn’t make it seem like it was my fault (because it wasn’t) but was honest that we were homeless and were going to have to stay in temporary accommodation until we moved into our private rental.
      I appreciate her honesty everyday, and now I know how to deal with life’s problems pretty well I like to believe! Hence the reason why I don't want to ever lay a finger on any credit card, let alone possess a credit card, but that's the thing I'm facing with my bank. I kept clear of a negative balance and the overdraft limit, so they want to remove said overdraft next month and replace it with my application for a credit card, but my credit score's about as bad as it could be, so I'm not eligible for most credit cards, so I'm hoping speaking to somebody at the bank face to face will help a lot more than they helped me over the phone. If not, I'm being put on universal credit and I'm buggered so far as keeping a roof over my own head is concerned.

      Get your mind right.
      Own your mistake, fix your courses of action, and keep moving because time doesn't stop for anyone!
      No one is perfect. We all have ups and down. The name of the game is how smart are you and what are you doing to make sure you have more ups than downs.
      Learn from every mistake you make, get some grit and resilience and you will be fine.

    The couple that took out a loan, using their home as collateral to secure the loan, to pay off credit cards makes me so sad. The credit cards (consumer debt) typically is granted with no collateral required, so if the card holder defaults it's not easy for the card issuer to collect payment. They couldn't get your house if it's your primary residence. The worst they could do would be to sue to get a lien placed against the property, but you don't have to ever sell your home to pay that loan. You choose when to sell, if ever. They wouldn't collect until you decide to sell. Whoever convinced them to use their home as collateral for a loan to pay off credit cards swindled them.

    • @purewonka
      @purewonka 7 лет назад +18

      Consumers often don't realize that credit counseling companies are usually arms of the same companies that issue the credit cards.They are going to convince you to do whatever you can to pay off the cards, such as using your house as collateral to pay off consumer debt. It is the worst advice possible in most cases. Default and/or bankruptcy are sometimes the best choices for consumers drowning in debt. These counseling companies are never going to present the option of strategic default. If this couple had made that choice they may still be in their home. Default is a financial tool that big companies all over the world sometimes choose when it makes the most sense for them. That tool is also available to consumers in most cases of consumer debt. Sure, the debt collectors can drive you crazy with phone calls, but that's more tolerable than being homeless, especially when kids are involved.

    My minimum payment on my visa next month: $130. The fees they're charging me next month: $250. And they keep offering me increases on my credit limit. They've structured it so that I'll get into deeper and deeper debt without noticing until it's too late. They don't care if I can repay it - they get the money one way or another, and profit massively from the interest in the process. If you're not careful, or don't have the skills/knowledge to look out for yourself, they'll destroy you for a few extra bucks, and there's no penalty to them for doing it.
    I'm really lucky to have my health, a decent paying job, no dependants, and a high level of education. My visa and student loans are unlikely to ruin me at this point. But I'm all too aware that I'm one major illness or layoff away from financial disaster at all times. There are a lot of people in the comments judging the folks in this documentary, but they shouldn't. As a former smoker myself I know how much it cost to keep up this nasty habit. When both bread earners are smoking it's double the cost. That's a large chunk of money when you are having financial difficulties. It's the price of a car payment every month. I hate myself for being judgmental but it's hard for me to feel sympathy for people who will spend their last dime on cigarettes or drugs or an addiction while their kids are on the brink of being homeless. I quit smoking 5 years ago and I've saved so much money even though the struggle to quit was horrible and one of the worse things I've ever gone through. I've watched my aunt run to buy cigs and let her 3 kids go hungry. I've seen this scenario over and over. Why does it seem the poorest people on earth are the ones that smoke? Thank God I'm free from that addiction and I credit that making my health improve dramatically. Saying all that, I do feel really bad for the kids.

    Being in debt is like being in prison, I've been there and been to court over it many times, I know what it feels like when a letter falls through the letter box, when every time your phone rings you know its someone chasing you for money you haven't got, bailiffs turning up at your door, sleepless nights, feeling like a failure to your family and friends. I take full responsibility to my debt and eventually I got myself straight again , please don't give up on yourself, I know its impossible to see a way out at times, but as long as you don't give up on yourself and are willing to work, you will get through it, just don't give up.

    The most utterly depressing thing about this documentary is that people continue to try to figure their way out of debt by using credit. Borrowing against already insufficient future earnings is never going to end well. If you can't afford your lifestyle with the income you have it's time to redraw your plans. Increase income and/or reduce outgoings.

      My husband and I both worked, we were financially doing well, never ever used our overdraft, we owned our house in a beautiful area, the house was brand new, with four bedrooms, two boys and a really great life, we would buy food for the local food bank, and children hospitals!
      Two years ago I was in an accident, I was walking along with my dog when an extremely fast car swerved and hit me, my leg was hanging off I could see my knee, I tried to lift my legs up, my left leg was full and I was elevated but my right leg was causing some pain, I couldn’t lift it so I thought I had broken my leg! The fire Brigade arrived followed by two ambulances, I thought the person in the car had died and that was why I had two ambulances! I was given some lovely drugs put straight into the needle in my hand! I am now a right leg amputee, the phantom pains are agonising, I can’t have a false leg due to the infection that got into my stump! I am now on PIPS; my husband has to work from home to look after me, we have lost our previous way of life we struggle, our savings are depleted, I hate feeling like a failure my husband is the best man EVER! We lost our home, thankfully the housing association gave us a fully adapted bungalow and we feel so lucky, my life is not great but I am thankful for my husband and kids! I have seriously thought of suicide many times, I have caused my family so many problems, our money is is very limited, I only eat cereal so my kids can have the proper food, I shouldn’t complain but sometimes it is very hard!

      MrsVenus27 well that was my point, hence why need... some are needs in terms of keeping up with the jones' but i NEED my phone i NEED my laptop ( or an equivalent). So though wages hace risen over 20 years, were as before we had say 20 essentials in life we now have 40... and thats why its difficult. If we lived with only the needs of 20 years ago... our wages would be adequate
