    Lorraine I so admire how you are now so comfortable with Homesteading- I remember when you got the First Pigs you were terrified- Proud of you 🥰🥰 also the way you both keep your place so organised & clean.     It's very smart to grow melons, pumpkins and winter squash to supplement your pig and chicken feed costs and the animals love it. I love your channel. 🤗❣️

    When it cracks ahead of the knife (or when you set it down), you know they're ripe. Different varieties are different shades of red. It's all about the flavor.
    Try watermelon drinks, slushies or watermelon granita, and pickled watermelon rind!

    we had a dog and in the summer when i would give the kids water melon i would send them out side to eat them as they made a mess and i would give the dog one and the kids would complain the dog would spit the seeds at them lol hugsss

    I bought a watermelon in San Antonio last week and it was 8.97. I am going to take the rind and make watermelon pickles.

    Watermelon lemonade reminds me of a watermelon cooler I made long time ago. Dip the rim of glass in lime juice and then in salt. Like a margarita! Yum!! So refreshing!

    I love when you have drone footage! It really shows all the progress on your homestead. Everything looks so lush and beautiful. The Kunekunes are adorable, and doing a great job of fertilizing the land. Your melon looks so delicious.

    I laughed out loud Jason. You kept saying pumpkin and I kept replaying it looking for the freaking pumpkin. Ha ha I knew I just had to be missing the pumpkin somewhere because you said pumpkin not watermelon. "The hardest part" for me was finding the pumpkin while I was staring at a watermelon. Thanks for the smiles 😂

    I make watermelon jam with low sugar. Its great on buttermilk pancakes! Y'all should try it. Make a small batch to see what you think of it.

    Thise pigs are very cute ! Even the adult piggies! I like the aerial shot of you're paddicks . Easier to understand and see exactly what you are doing in that regards . The watermelons look 👍

    Wild persimmon pulp freezes well and makes the best cookies, bread and pudding. Excellent for health too.

    We remove the skin, eat the red part and use the rind cubed and sautéed in stir fry recipes.

    💚 Your place is looking great, much improved in less than 2 years..the animals have helped a lot! The pigs are so great, Zeke really is a patient, good pig. The watermelon looks so refreshing and I see lots of suggestions in the comments on ways to use them. Glad you got another farm truck!😊💚

    It's great that you gow pigs and chicken food like pumpkins and squash.
    Probably you will add more over the years, like some corn , potatoes, turnips and such . It will dramatically reduce cost of bought feed and be definitely healthy . 👍

    Great harvest and you should try preserving the watermelon rinds, you just shave off the green outer and then the rest is cut in 1 inch blocks and simmered in a syrup. It is delicious on toast

    Awesome fresh watermelon,too short of a season for us in the central interior of B.C. Canada up in the mountains.Also we have a huge deer and bear population so you really need a very secure greenhouse 🇨🇦🦋❤️Happy harvest you 3🤗

    Colour coordinated with the water melon, that was funny. 🍉🍉🍉 I would sugest harvest your winter squash before the critters get them. If they are just a bit under ripe they will continue to ripen in storage. 🎃

    You can make aqua fresca with watermelon. Most people strain the pulp, but my family loves it. The kids love watermelon and strawberry, but I prefer watermelon and cucumber it's really simple.

    Watermelon may be juiced and then fermented into vinegar. The juice may also be boiled down into a sweet and concentrated molasses. Enjoy the abundance!

    I make watermelon jam/jelly every year, 4 cups watermelon juice/pulp, 4 cups sugar, 1 low sugar pectin. It sets soft of you use less sugar or honey. But it tastes if summer even in the middle of winter.

    In the Ball book of Home Preserving there is a recipe for pickled watermelon rind. They taste like cinnamon gummy bears!!

    When my squash reached a certain size, I took down the fence and let the chickens in because they couldn't dig up the plants. They ate nearly all of the squash bugs and fertilized as well. I have to do that because the squash bugs are horrendous here in Vermont and I wouldn't have anything even if I did spray. The patch produced well despite our rainy, rainy summer.

    There is a recipe by ball for watermelon rind jam/relish. Also you could eke watermelon fruit leather, watermelon gummies. Great harvest. Nancy from nebraska

    Love kunekunes. They might be a smaller breed but they still provide plenty of meat and so easy to handle.

    If you do chia seeds you can do a " aqua fresca" SUPER simple to make. Blend up some watermelon add chia seeds to taste and add some lime juice to taste. its so refreshing and delicious.

    are my favourite summer fruit , chilled taste refreshing, quench the thirst and are delicious 😋
    Storing Watermelon juce doesn’t sound bad idea . You can even freeze it . Drink during winter or use it in smoothie.

    Another sign I heard is if the spacing between the green strips is equal it is ripe.

    Man, you should use the shorter netting for those pigs. Way easier to handle and way easier to step over. Also, there's an art to folding and unfolding those fences so they don't tangle on themselves. Once you learn the technique, it's pretty easy to avoid tangles.

    My friend who lives near you told me years ago if your watermelon isn’t quite ripe , cut it up and leave on the counter covered. It will get sweeter by the day.

    Good job on the watermelon! I grew pumpkins and winter squash for the first time this year. The pigs are so cute! We are doing the same thing with our pigs, we don't want piggies in the winter time either. She didn't get pregnant the last time so we will try again.

    The thumbnail test. If your thumb can make an impression easily on skin of pumpkin then it's not ready. You can leave pumpkins on the porch in the sun to further ripen.

    You could make watermelon jam/jelly. My mom always made it and she also made watermelon pickles out of the yellow part of the rinds, not the outer peel tho. They were delicious.

    W’melon salad. Arugula, melon, feta cheese, also,for next year….I think it’s blue Hubbard squash is a host for squash bugs, so some plant it to draw them from other squashes. Random thought! Great. Harvest!
