What a superb riff - this was from their 7th CD Time & Tide - their 5th, 6th & 7th CDs are absolutely fantastic: True Colours, followed by Waiata (or Corroboree), followed by Time and Tide - very underated band - superb songs written mainly by the Finn brothers
Those 3 albums were definitely their golden era. There are many who will argue that the pre-Frenzy era was their best, but it’s really just a case of apples and oranges. They were basically two different bands if you look at the different eras. Personally I think their 1980-82 period is by far the best.
They had talent for great hooks. No one can question that. Like everyone else back in the day and probably now, you unknowingly hear one of their tracks and wonder, "who does that?!"
My fave album track, I liked the early 80s synthetic water or ice drop style noise and this does sound like a ship rocking back and forth with a storm stirring up on the sea in between the steady beats.
yeah - this just spun up randomly on my pandora... what a fantastic song... I had totally forgotten about it... Need to download Time & Tide... my copy of it in a box in the attic somewhere... a 30-year vinyl record...

Dont forget "Conflicting Emotions", which was almost as good as "Time&Tide".

I still listen to these songs these days just kick ass to the related music. The more older the more better it gets.

I remember this song when I was at intermediate school... Growing up in New Zealand during the 80s wow...

Giant Heartbeat
Split Enz
Produced by Split Enz & Hugh Padgham
Album: Time and Tide
Heartbeat bearing down
Our world never sleeps
Feel like a Zephyr harmonising with a flute
Notes are rising in familiar twos and threes
Time of yearning is the same at any age
Back is bending and the sky is growing pale
Sun up sun down fade to a lookalike
Hearts and souls move together in time
One step forward is a leap for all mankind
Old Man River smiles on all he leaves behind
Ooh when temptation brings you down
I say you better spread yourself around
Red limbs my body's torn apart
Boy's hand will squeeze the giant's heart
Sun up sun down fade to a lookalike
Hearts and souls move together in time
If anybody's listening the giant heartbeat is fading
Fire burns
Water drowns
Hate kills
Our homes
Faith helps
Love heals
Sun up sun down fade to a lookalike
Hearts and souls move together in time
If anybody's listening
If anybody's listening
Is anybody listening
The giant heartbeat is fading
