I’ve had that amp (a ‘79 as well) forever and was always wondering why it was less gainy than what I’d hear from others using it. Blew a tube and took it in for service and finally found out it was modded to a plexi type circuit. I basically always used pedals for dirt. I can’t wait to bring it home soon as my tech has restored it to its former stock glory with a Van Halen mod to give it a touch more gain. I can’t wait

I own a 1978 Marshall JMP that I bought used at MachineHead Music in Hitchin. Bought, probably in 1991, it is modified input, so no jump cable needed. I also bought my 1989 Les Paul Standard from Geoff, as well as some Marshall cabs. I met Terry Marshall at Machine Head as well and incredibly was invited to the Marshall factory. I've toured it several times. I'll never forget how nice all the guys at Marshall were, to a young Airman in the USAF, stationed at RAF Chicksands.

Gotta love some good Antiquities. Had a set in a '95 Explorer I used to own. In my opinion they nail that P.A.F. tone. And before anyone asks me, I've played a Max Les Paul with real P.A.F's into a Bogner Helios. Killer sounding amp man.

Extremely useful video, I have had my 1979 JMP 50 since new. I just biased mine up with Mullard reissue pre and power tubes and it roars. The low input option is extremely helpful and yes, sounds very much like a plexi. I am getting a lot of idle hum with the amp pinned however. I've gigged and recorded with this amp and it is fantastic. I try to get it up into its power curve like, 4 on the pre and 6 on the master.

Couldn't help but notice the Albuquerque shirt - I live in Roswell. Like the amp service/mod channels as I dabble in that a little. Have several Marshalls including a '98 DSL50 which I read about on the forums as potentially having problems. Checked the chassis versus the schematic and sure enough some component values were way different. My amp worked fine except sounded a bit mushy to my ears. Decided to risk the $500 investment and mod the amp - changing component values and doing some mods described as "Joey" mods. I ended up replacing about 33 components, added a choke etc. I held my breath and was ready to cut the power should anything smoke, flame, or explode. I was very careful, had gone to school for electronics (decades ago) but am not a pro level solderer. Switched it on, let it sit a while, biased it - and whaddya know everything worked! It sounds tighter, punchier and is dead quiet at idle. Cannot emphasize how slowly and carefully I proceeded, with many notes and pictures.

Even though I now do this professionally, I still take my time. I don’t charge for the actual hours spent on my repairs. I treat every amp as if it was my own and take great care and time. Always accounting for human error to 🤣.
Congrats on getting the DSL sorted. Superb amps that can be made better.

Good amps. I had one. 78’. The only thing I don’t like so much is the super low plate voltage from the PT. Mine was around 390v.
Makes the amp a bit mushy.
It can’t take too much gain or it gets more mushy cause of the low headroom. Pretty sweet sounds from it tho.

    • @RDamps
