The biggest problem with Derrick Henry is, and the ravens are going to find this out, Henry does not do well if he doesn’t get 25-30 touches a game. The entire offense has to revolve around him, which in today’s NFL does not work. Henry would be great in the 80s or 90s, but the current NFL is a passing league now and teams who are run first don’t find much success. Henry is both a gift and a curse, a double edged sword who can keep your team competitive but also prevent your team from getting over the top.
Well, Henry is a classic power back. Tall, heavy, relies more so on his size and strength to run the ball rather than speed and elusiveness. Problem is, the day of the power backs are over. They run primarily out of the “I” formation, which is rarely used in most modern offenses. Teams have shifted to smaller, quicker, pass catching backs that function mostly in the shotgun formation. Put simply, he fell to the second round because few teams would be willing to change their offensive mindset over an obsolete style of running the ball.
The funny thing about the Titans is even going back to their time as the Oilers. They have had four great running backs over the years. Earl Campbell, Eddie George, Chris Johnson & of course Derrick Henry yet they accomplished nothing with any of them. Yes Ik they made a Super Bowl when they had Eddie George but we all know what happened there
As a titans fan it’s not everyday someone gives us attention like this so even if it is a pseudo criticism video I’ll still thank you for making it. I wasn’t too sad when Henry left since he served us well and we had no right to force him to stay in a changing franchise. But it still stung and It hurts to watch him go after all he’s given us. I’d say we failed him primarily through coaching and managerial issues. Vrabel was a defensive mastermind but his offensive coordinators continually failed to secure a consistently good passing attack and it’s what sunk us in all of our playoff runs. It didn’t help that Vrabel was often friends with his o coordinators so fan calls to remove them rarely got through. J Rob was also god awful in his last few years and made horrible decisions like trading AJ for Pennies on the dollar during the draft. In two years our new GM, Ran Carthon, has done more for our team than J Rob did in his entire tenure and I’m happy that he won the ensuing power struggle against Vrabel, so that we can finally become a modern franchise. As a result we have a really promising roster and future (even if the media always ignores us) but the memory of watching the bengals take us down in 2022 during derrick’s prime is always gonna hurt. The franchise failed to build around him and I hope he can come back at some point to retire as a titan and the king he was always meant to be.
Derrick Henry is a very good running back, and probably the best to enter the nfl since Adrian Peterson. He’s had a hell of a start to his career, but I don’t think his career will have the lasting impression left that AP did. 6all pros,6 pro bowls, AP mvp and the last non-qb to win in now 12 years, and 1x AP offensive player of the year.
As a Titans fan. If we didnt resign Ryan Panichill after the AFC Championship run, we would have won a ring. He is the only QB in NFL history to throw game losing interceptions in the final minute at home in a playoff game in back to back years. Then we let AJ Brown walk?! That was the final straw for me. That 2021 Titans defense was ferocious! 9 sacks on Joe Borrow and still lost 😤
So who you getting at QB then? He was coming off his best season ever as a starter in 2020 (33 TDs 7 picks). Henry only played 8 games that season so the fact you guys went 12-5 with him at QB and without Henry was still impressive......plus Tannenhill had 7 rushing TDs to go along with his 21 TD passes in 2021. It's easy to shit on him for the Bengals game now in hindsight but your logic on the matter is stupid considering the info we had at the time.
@@crater044 ok what about the Ravens loss at home in the playoffs? An no one remembers Brady was a FA that offseason he went to Tampa and did what?! Won a ring 😂
Titans fan here, a great video as always Tubfrog. This video reminded me of all the times I have cried the last couple years, slimmers of hope shattered in milliseconds. I never knew The King was on the trade block, however I did know how mid Tanny was and how hard he choked. Yes in 2021 reg szn he was under appreciated but he completely bottled it. I cant forget him throwing into quadruple coverage to Nick Westbrook-Ihkine of all people
as a ravens fan who nearly cried after getting demolished by Henry in the 2019 playoffs i can’t wait to see how he plays for us in 2024. With the chiefs ruining Henry’s and the titans run in 2019 and ours this past year i hope we at least make it to the AFC championship and beat the chiefs(if they’re still in contention).
Eagles fan. It still feels a little weird that we dicked over a franchise not named the Giants, but hot damn are we thankful the Titans traded us AJ Brown. We've been a wasteland of mid WRs (except TO) for so long, it's been a mind-blowing experience to have him and Devonta on the same team. So thank you and I genuinely hope that your fortunes turn around... And for the love of all things holy, don't pick up if Howie Roseman calls.

the reason why derrick henry wasn't getting many snaps when he was younger was because the titans wanted to protect him long term because they used him so much at alabama
BTW, Baltimore has been the bane of Titans since the Titans became the Titans and the Ravens became the Ravens. After the 1999 Super Bowl Almost, 2000, 2001, Tennessee was turning into a perennial powerhouse, but the Ravens broke their 12 game home winning streak, eliminated top seeded Titans in the 2001 playoffs with Ray Lewis ripping the ball out of Eddie George's hands and returning it for a touchdown. The rivalry faded, mostly because of the tailspin Tennessee went into in the following years, and the Ravens beating them was just a good team beating a lousy team year in year out. It's only recently re-emerged, but I suspect with the departure of Henry, TN will once again lapse into some combination of ineptness & futility occasionally laced with sparks of greatness wasted.
25:06 impressive that Henry is not dwarfing AP in that pic. I was the biggest Peterson fan this side of the border and I don’t remember him being that tall.
7:59 Derrick Henry is from the Jacksonville FL area... Was actually honored at a jags game for signing with Alabama as a teen. Him and jax always have some type of story.
as a titans fan i love henry but none of us were wanting to bench murray for henry back then. henry was reported as being on the brink of getting cut bc he was underperforming and also just the general vibe among the fanbase was that he was a bust before he had his breakout. maybe in hindsight that was pretty dumb but no titans fans werent calling for murray to get benched or anything
As a titan fan, it pains me that we couldn’t get him a ring. We got close in 2019 and 2021 but the pieces didn’t fall in place. He was always a class act here in the community. No drama. He always just went about his business. It hurts me to see him sign with a hated rival, but if he gets that ring, I would not mind it.
Their biggest mistake was extending Ryan tannehill. He is just not that guy. They could have traded for Baker or even got stafford in a trade if they didn't extend ryan
that 2019 run was on the same level of horror when Marleyan citizens saw Eren's Founder form eviscerated the entire world's navy of their coast. That was greatest Titan season I've ever experienced. Little did I know it would be nothing but heartbreak and point shaving Tannehill in the playoffs afterwards.
@@C.Mustard I still wish we could have got them at the trade deadline this past season because he would have made a huge difference in that embarrassment of an AFC Championship we committed
It really sucks that people fail repeatedly at building around their star players. I know an RB isn't a traditional way to build the team up, but if all the fans (especially non Titans fans) are screaming for it, maybe someone in the front office should be trying harder. Dude is a beast, and I hope he gets success in Baltimore. My team is in NFC, so it really won't bother me. Love watching this dude truck DBs!
I’m just happy that you didn’t only criticize Jon Robinson in this vid, because even though Vrabel is a good head coach, he could not hire a good coordinator! After Lafleur and Peas everybody else was garbage! (except Arthur who was at least ok)
Derrick Henry leaving the Titans stings from their fans' perspective not only because he meant so much to them in his prime, but he also happened to sign with their most hated rival the Baltimore Ravens. As a Raven, the King brought me tears of pain and sorrow in 2019, hopefully in 2024 he'll bring me tears of joy. But first, WE GOTTA GET PAST THE CHIEFS AS WELL AS OUR LOADED DIVISION!
As a lifelong Titans fan, I gotta say. We ALL loved Demarco Murray, bro. He played hard and he did a great job when he was in. There was nothing wrong with having Henry sit a year or two to save tread on his tires. The Dion Lewis signing on the other hand…. I don’t know of a single person in the fanbase that supported that signing. We didn’t like Dion the whole time, he struggled with fumbles, never converted short down situations, and he had nothing super special to offer as a runner. That part of the video was alternative history.
As a Colts fan, I'm glad the Titans weren't able to put it all together! Props to Henry for his success, but it's dope Tennessee never achieved a SB win, let alone appearance, in that timeframe.
I'm glad Derrick left Tennessee we didn't deserve him. On the plus at least he'll be playing a 40 minute drive from my house. Last time I was at BBT stadium was when I witnessed the King silenced 70,000 people in the 2019 divisional round
No matter what he does with the Ravens, Derrick Henry is going to the Hall of Fame mainly from what he did with the Titans. I'm not a Titans fan but I'd hardly consider that a failure. Especially in a league that doesn't build around running backs anymore, that's pretty great for a second round pick. This narrative of 'teams failing players' doesn't apply to everyone, especially for a position like running back which they chose to feature for 5+ years unlike most teams.
Man that 2022 season that he had almost 1000 yds half way through and got injured was tough. If he'd been able to keep that up I'd bet he'd have broken the single season rushing record. But, didn't happen and we'll never know......damnit.
maybe i missed it but, i remember vividly that Henry was at the end of his rope with the Titans, then met with running back legend Eddie George. And Eddie told him to start really throwing his weight around when he ran, cuz it might be the onyl way to save his career. and then thats when he started popping off. am i wrong?
I still remember the 2020 afccg the chiefs ran a goal line defense at midfield. Show how much they respect Henry and disrespected the Titans passing game
You should do a video on the Bears during the Ted Phillips President era (1999-2022). I know he doesn’t have a shit ton of “scandals” but since he’s been gone the bears are a totally different organization. It’s actually a huge breath of fresh air. Especially since during Phillips’ reign the bears got to the Super Bowl with that legendary 06 team.
@@tubfrog you could really start from when George Halas Died and just go from there. Cause ever since his daughter and the cancerous McCaskey’s took over: it’s been a downward spiral until Kevin Warren and Ryan poles came in 83-22 should give you tons to work with

This genuinely upsets me anytime I think about King Henry's time in TN! If only we'd kept Brown added to the O Line, drafted a TE/WR. Obviously get a FRANCHISE QB! Yet don't forget how Eddie George changed Henry's career.
As a Titans fan, I'm personally glad we've moved on from Henry and Brown. As long as those two were still with us, we were gonna have a coach/gm delusional about the value of having a quarterback who can do more than be accurate and minimize turnovers, and those two were gonna keep making enough big, clutch plays to keep us in consistent playoff contention, while Vrabel and J-Rob's flawed philosophies prevented us from ever becoming true contenders.
17:20 the game that won/lost fantasy weeks in the fantasy playoffs back when week 14 was a playoff week in fantasy football. Anyone who played against Henry that night needed a miracle that week in the fantasy playoffs as.
As a Titans fan, it hurts that he's gone, but it was time. Hoping Spears and Levis can make something happen and that Ran Carthon doesn't have a Jon Robinson regression

The craziest part is that he won the heisman and still got drafted in the second round HOW
Well, Henry is a classic power back.
@@cadeo.1265typical power backs don’t run 4.5 40s and hit 20mph in the open field.
The funny thing about the Titans is even going back to their time as the Oilers. They have had four great running backs over the years.
Earl Campbell, Eddie George, Chris Johnson & of course Derrick Henry yet they accomplished nothing with any of them. Yes Ik they made a Super Bowl when they had Eddie George but we all know what happened there
Doesnt Earl have an AFL Championship from before the merger?
@@1987palerider no he was drafted in 1978 after the merger
Here in week 8 of the 2024 season, Henry in fact still has that “speed burst” as the leagues leading rusher.
As a titans fan hearing you say this franchise ruined Mariota makes me happy in a way somebody else realizes what they did to that man
*A lot of it had to do with Vrabel
Excellent video tubby…as usual. I love these deep dives.
You seriously create the best team/player retrospective documentaries on the platform.. the best, Jerry.. the best!
I’m not a fan of Mariota but I gotta respect anyone who gave their body to the game like he did that 2018 season
It still feels so weird seeing the dude who basically single handedly ended that crazy 2019 season for the Ravens now wearing a Ravens jersey lol
If we didn’t resign Tannehill we wouldn’t have a quarterback and they tend to be pretty important to winning SBs
No, you absolutely dont win a ring regardless. Did mahomes just magically retire in your scenario? 😂
@@SycoticForeverNeverAF tom brady was a free agent that year?! Im sure he would have joined the Titans if they didnt sign Panichill
Lmao you mean if the ravens are still in contention right? The chiefs FLOOR is the afc tittle game. The ravens get there every 10 years 😂
Babe, wake up, there’s a new hour long TugFrog video.
Its always a good day When tubfrog uploads
The best NFL deep-diver on RUclips strikes again with another gem. Thank you 😊
He’s basically this generation’s barry sanders

I'm a Titans fan and King Henry is definitely special. But Barry was from another planet.
I really do enjoy your videos, even the videos about other teams.
So much content. I'm so happy ❤
Anyone here after he went off against the bills
Demarco Murray was a very good back for the Titans. It took "The King" awhile to get up to speed on things

the reason why derrick henry wasn't getting many snaps when he was younger was because the titans wanted to protect him long term because they used him so much at alabama

Safe to say that Henry is not out of his prime just yet 😈
25:06 impressive that Henry is not dwarfing AP in that pic. I was the biggest Peterson fan this side of the border and I don’t remember him being that tall.
The goat had uploaded again
Henry being rested for much of his early years is something that helps imo
I swear to god if a genie granted me only one wish I’d ask for TubFrog videos everyday

Derrick Henry is from the Jacksonville FL area...
Because they were using him wrong. Henry needs carries. You can't evaluate him with the titans giving him 8 touches a game.
@@mikeb3936 that’s not wrong but it also doesn’t negate what i said at all
@@sportstalk9543 your wrong because there were plenty of people who wanted Henry to start.

The guy only drops bangers.
As a Titan fan I KNEW this would happen, I said he is wasting his time.
34:22 is the wildest expression 😂 great find
"His head-ass" got me crying bruh 🤣🤣
Finally. I've been sick of getting notifications and then finding out it's just a short that I don't care about 99% of the time
Their biggest mistake was extending Ryan tannehill.
As a ravens fan I’m hoping he’s the same as he was a few years ago. I hope he’s not out of his prime
Right hopefully he's still has some good gas in the tank left for us
@@MazeDaGr8 yup especially with are o line! Could be deadly

Glad to see you finally back
this is a great video until you remember you're a ravens fan and the 2019 game retriggers your ptsd from that game
Titans seriously peaked with Ryan Tannehill 🤦♂️
Niiiiiiice, a new TubFrog video ❤
Yeahhhh I think he found a bit of that old speed boost again..
Titans fan here. This hurts. Although, I am glad that Henry's last game as a Titan was spent doing what he did best: owning the Jaguars
Just when I was getting sad I had already gone through all your videos… here we go… tubfrog the goat
bills fan but king henry is has been one of my favorite players since he came into the nf
Didn’t know the Titans showed their inner Raiders lol
As a Titans fan here…..this video gonna hurt! But love the content!!
I think this is just retribution for Bud Adams relocating the Oilers and retiring the name.
Houston has just been cursed when it comes to football
As a lifelong Titans fan, I gotta say. We ALL loved Demarco Murray, bro. He played hard and he did a great job when he was in. There was nothing wrong with having Henry sit a year or two to save tread on his tires. The Dion Lewis signing on the other hand…. I don’t know of a single person in the fanbase that supported that signing. We didn’t like Dion the whole time, he struggled with fumbles, never converted short down situations, and he had nothing super special to offer as a runner. That part of the video was alternative history.
I mean Dion was solid for the patriots 😂. But after all the knee surgeries. He just couldn’t make cuts anymore.
As a Titans fan, I loved picking Henry. But it was frustrating seeing him behind Murray and Lewis. I was yelling at the TV
Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry were what got me into football, seeing them both already gone makes me sad😔
Maybe I’m sure I’ll get to the bears eventually but there’s just so many different eras I could cover I don’t even know where to start
@@tubfrog you could really start from when George Halas Died and just go from there. Cause ever since his daughter and the cancerous McCaskey’s took over: it’s been a downward spiral until Kevin Warren and Ryan poles came in 83-22 should give you tons to work with
@@tubfrog I’ll do you one better: just go from when George Halas died (1982-83) to 2023. That was also Ted Phillips’ first year in the organization. It’ll cover the 85 bears collapse too. And then shift into the “modern era “ and you can shit on the McCaskey’s then
This genuinely upsets me anytime I think about King Henry's time in TN!
