Next topic: Dolphins after Dan Marino. It’s a very interesting topic as that franchise has had gone through a rollercoaster of highs and lows since Marino retired. The video on that topic would be nice to watch.
They’ve been stuck for 30 years. The 1992 AFC Championship Game was they’re last shot as contenders. It was all downhill for Marino and Shula after that game. And they’ve been a mess ever since.
@jpmnky Yeah, the highlight of the Post-Marino Era was going 11-5 and losing in the wildcard. Other than that they've been ass and right behind the browns and Jets for futility at QB.
I always kinda looked at the Vikings as a similar team….The NFC version of the Chiefs. Both were well respected franchises that had plenty of history & some all-time great players from the early AFL years & while they weren’t great, they could still put together some 5 year periods of being good. Y’know, they weren’t like, Browns or Lions bad.
I remember the Marty Shottenheimer era. Having a 13-3 season and loosing to the Donkeys at home after a first round bye. The getting to the playoffs just to loose was a Chiefs tradition. I have sympathy for the fans of Buffalo for all their heartache because I had felt it most of my life as a Chiefs fan. Now that we are being talked about as a dynasty is completely elating. Losing to the Lions was rough but still the hope of running it back is strong. Our young receivers are going to learn and grow this season, with Mahomes tossing them balls that hit them in the hands be assured the drops will not continue like the first game.
I just wish Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Marcus Peters (in his prime), and Tyrann Mathieu were playing with Chris Jones to go along with that great offense that they've had the past few years. Can you imagine how many Super Bowls they would win!
I moved to KCMO from Arkansas in 1999 and this just about tells my life as a Chiefs fan. I wasn’t a Chiefs fan before moving to KC, but I was a Coach Vermeil fan. My first game at Arrowhead I was sold and have been a fan ever since. I thought this was one of the most complete explanations of how the organization had built itself up to where it is now. The only thing I wish you would’ve added was Herm Edwards first press conference where he stated the Chiefs biggest issue was the offense was scoring too fast. So he planned to slow the offense down rather than fixing that horrible defense. That press conference lives in infamy and rent free in my head to this day!
As a chiefs fan my entire young life (25) I can assure you the love that comes from the red and yellow comes from the lows. Such a sad early 2000s but man those are the teams I fell in love with.
So glad you made this. The media has been trying to rewrite the narrative and pretend like it’s beef all sunshine and rainbows. The franchise, city, and fans went through hell to get to this point.
I was in Lexana KS when the Chiefs beat the Bengals last year. That atmosphere was awesome. Bunch of Bengals fans at the Hyatt I stayed in. Made me wish even more San Antonio had an NFL team it was awesome
Derrick Thomas didn’t just get any old blood clot. He got in a car wreck heading to the airport during a snowstorm. Car wreck left him a paralyzed prior to the complications at the hospital being the final nail in the coffin.
Ya shit was fucked. I honestly just didn’t want to scare people off at the start of the video with overly dark content which so I didn’t go into any further than I did
As a long time Chiefs fan (since SB 4) you did a great job summing up my pain over the years (including that 28-3 failed win that has led me to not be able to watch the games live anymore due to anxiety issues). I recently went through all the games after SB 4 during the Stram era just to understand why they never got back to the SB with that hall of fame team and it came down to Dawson's injuries and a not so good backup. thanks for a thorough job on the video.
Yeah, I can’t watch the games anymore either. I just don’t find it enjoyable. It makes me way too anxious. One of the reasons I enjoy the preseason so much is cause I can actually watch them play without stressing out, lol (plus, I like seeing the new guys & practice squad players out there). I know football season is about to start when I hear Trent Green calling those preseason games.
The Chefs really did have some wild (and sad) ups and down. I still feel like crying over Belcher and especially doing that in front of all around good guy Romeo Crennel. He might not have been able to achieve as a head coach, but he always seems to be beloved by players. I would not be surprised to see Reid & Mahomes get at least two more superbowl wins. It might not be this year, but they have a way of telling the NFL to sit down and shut up.
I've been a chiefs fan for almost 3 decades now, and there was a lot of stuff in here that even I didn't know/had forgotten about, very well researched!
Basically the premise of 90s Chiefs onward is: Good defense, or good offense. Both cannot exist in the same season. It's been an up and down since I've been a fan my whole life, but the past 10 years have been such an upswing and hopefully it stays upward even longer!
I swear in 2005 the Chiefs had a good offense and defense. They went 10-6 and missed the playoffs. I still swear it's one of the best Chiefs teams I've seen.
Yep, this has very much been my experience growing up in KC, essentially becoming a fan at the start of this vid’s timeline😂 I don’t think outsiders will ever be able to understand our love and appreciation of this team, from the highest highs in the league, to some of the lowest lows

I remember the bullshit calls that sparked some of these excruciating losses. Took away 3 points in the loss to the Titans right before half, I think it was a BS holding on Eric Fisher on our 2 point conversion in the Steelers loss. Offsides on Dee Ford. In 2014 the bullshit call that cost us the Raiders away game which ultimately made us miss the playoffs. Don't even get me started on the 45-44 loss, which so far for me has been the most difficult to experience, Lin Elliot game notwithstanding.
even back in 2014/2015 when I was a kid, as a Bronco fan, I knew all they needed was a qb and they would win a super bowl and be in contention for a while. little did I know they would get Pat Mahomes. Seen this coming from a mile away.
Seeing some of these games I watched in person brings back some terrible memories, along with the Belcher situation its enough to bring a tear to my eyes. I know we may be the enemies now but boy I am glad we finally have something to believe in
Great video as always, Tub! The 2003 season is when my young self started paying attention to football and became a die hard fan of my hometown Chiefs, so this has been a great way to relive the roller coaster that was Chiefs football in the 21st century!
I’d suggest covering the jags as I’m a lifelong fan, but aside from the time someone hit themself in the leg with an axe IN the locker room, I can’t think of anything interesting about them other than “meteoric rise, then plummeting into hell and staying there forever”

@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Same here, pal 😄. I remember during that 2019 superbowl run that I pretty much held my breath until that final clock hit 0 and they were officially declared champions. However, as painful as it's been for me as a Chiefs fan with Peyton Manning on the Broncos and of course that 2017 wildcard loss, it's been even worse for my dad and Grandpa My dad remembers the John Elway Broncos years and the heartbreak in the postseason during the Marty Schottenheimer Era and my grandfather remembers even further them that he's told me about that Christmas day playoff game against the Dolphins which is still the longest game ever played. Safe to say as long time Chiefs fans we had kind of become used to heartbreak which is why it felt like a dream to see the Chiefs finally win it all back in 2019 and even go back to the superbowl the following year.

When Mahomes hit Sammy for that TD, I seriously thought I was dreaming for a minute. After 40 years of following KC, it didn’t seem like it would ever happen..
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Exactly. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop as it always had on us. When he hit Sammy I knew Patty had exercised all those demons and we were finally going to do it.
I completely understand why people outside of Kansas City don't see our team as a dynasty, but it's different for those of us who follows the team. We've averaged 12 regular season wins for a decade now. Our recent success includes a couple good years from Alex Smith as well. And although we didn't win Super Bowls at the time we were most certainly a dominant team unlike any that we've had before. And we were consistently building to be the team we are now. Which is the same reason I don't see a fall off happening any time soon. We were never a one hit wonder, it took time to build a winning culture and that won't change overnight
I've been a Chiefs fan since 1966. Watching all of this brings back some memories of decades of heart-breaking and baffling losses. I think that loss to Brady in the AFCTG didn't hit us as hard as you'd think because by then, we had grown accustomed to losing. Winning the SB the next year was a exhale we needed for many years.
Born and raised here and KC. At 43 I Lived trough all this. There was some hard times 4real , but what we have now makes it all worth it. Good job on the video
14:30 Nice job mentioning the 2012 Chiefs blackout game! That's kind of a forgotten piece in Chiefs lore that's not known by outside fans. 32:22 That ended up also being Andrew Luck's final game in the NFL Anyways, great video TubFrog! It hadn't always been sunshine and championships in Kansas City, especially considering the fact that from 1994 to 2012 we had to watch a baseball team that had already been in a 20+ year long playoff drought and a football team that could not get past the divisional round of the playoffs. Since 2013, Kansas City has stacked up an MLS Cup, a World Series, 2 Super Bowls, and a college basketball national championship (that is technically 45 minutes west of KC) and is having arguably one of the most successful runs in a small media market in the last 10 years.
You did it. I don’t know how you did it, but you nailed my entire lifetime worth of chiefs fandom. Football is a community thing in KC and the you nailed the heartache and depression from 06-12 (my entire elementary school life: it was really traumatic). But you also nailed the mediocrity of the 12-17 seasons. The mediocrity was incredible in comparison to historically bad teams. Then BOOM: the kickoff return against the Texans (I was at Talk of the Town in Leawood with my dad [rest in peace] and said “this would be a great time for a kickoff return td”). That’s when things changed in KC.
This was an excellent piece of work. I followed the Chiefs for over 25 years (since Montana) and your piece is dead on. You captured just enough of the frustration that the fans felt over the years to bring us to the Nirvana of Chiefs Kingdom. Go Chiefs! BTW, why do you have that poster of Tom Brady?
Great job on Chiefs history! Gosh I remember those "fire pioli" flyovers. I also remember those years when we'd make the playoffs only to have our spirits crushed in first one or two playoff games. Enjoyed this!
I was born in 93 been raised as a Chiefs fan all my life have watched every season from 2002 to present there were definitely some really rough years but it's all worth it now crazy how ever since we got Andy Reid we have only missed the playoffs once
@@johnchedsey1306 And he has the camera all to himself on his own 24 yard line!!! If only Marcos Allan didn't mess up his perfect TV show by belly flopping into the edge of the screen as he crossed the goal line, it would've been perfect!!!
You forgot to mention when they got Alex smith, that’s like the 6th 49ers backup or former starting QB the Chiefs have gotten from San Fran🤣 it’s a whole history with these two teams
Man, if only we hadn't taken Todd Blackledge in '83. That's gotta be one of the biggest draft blunders of all time. Probably also influenced the decision not to draft another QB in the first round until Mahomes.
I’ll never forget that I told everyone I worked with at the time that Mahomes was going to be the next best thing. We started a fantasy league that year (2018) and I drafted him in like the 9th or 10th rounds. Nobody I worked with believed me. I’ll always remember that
I love that, even today, whenever Mahomes does something incredible, my dad will say, “You said he would be great the whole time, from right after they drafted him..” I didn’t know anything about him when KC selected Mahomes in the draft, but it only took about 2 minutes of video research to see that this kid was going to be special. Once I saw him in a couple preseason games, I was convinced he was gonna take us to a Super Bowl (though I still couldn’t believe it when he actually did, lol).
I'm going to enjoy this team for the next 10-15 yrs. I began watching the Chiefs at age 5 while living in KC. We had a defense that dominated games.(7 players in HOF) Then 22 yrs of horror. A reprive throughout the '90's but couldn't win divisional playoff games. Once again a dominating defense.13 yrs of pure horror followed. 2013 Andy Reid was hired. The Chiefs won their first 9 games but as always finished weak. I didn't realize what was being built. '13 Kelse & Fisher were drafted, '16 Hill & Jones were drafted & in '17 Hunter & Mahomes were drafted. Things changed quickly. I didn't see this coming.
I'm digging your content. I'm a hack football historian, and I appreciate how that woek comes through on your vids. Look forward to going through your channel content
I made other comments but wanted to say two things Mr. Frog 1. Nice, well done video 2. The Chiefs started playing before 2000. Actually even before the 1990's. I know people today don't believe things happened more than 30 years ago.
Two calls ended the Patriots game, Dee Ford’s offsides and the most blatant bad call in nfl playoff history (after the missed PI in the saints-rams game that same week) in the roughing the passer called on Chris Jones
Although this pretty much summarizes the Chiefs since I've been watching them, the Chiefs woes started WAY before Dick Vermeil got there. Since the 1971 season, just a couple years after they won their first Superbowl, they were god-awful until Marty Schottenheimer got there in 1989. He immediately drafted Derrick Thomas who became DROY. Christian Okoye was also OPOY in 89, and this was also when the Chiefs defense became one of the best in the league and Arrowhead got it's reputation for being the loudest outdoor stadium on earth. Definitely a different vibe when Vermeil came in and we had almost no defense whatsoever. Hard to get loud on D when they're letting literally anyone go up and down the field on them. The best statistics I've seen to encapsulate how bad the Chiefs were for so long is until Mahomes they hadn't won a home playoff game since the 1993 season (25 years) with Joe Montana, and they hadn't started a QB they drafted in the 1st round since Todd Blackledge in the mid-1980s. 40 years of either terrible QB play or repurposing other team's cast-offs.

You should do a video explaining how the Vikings haven’t managed to win a Super Bowl yet have had such great talent
Secret Base just did 7
As another commenter mebtuoned: Secret Base has you covered
I always kinda looked at the Vikings as a similar team….The NFC version of the Chiefs.
Both were well respected franchises that had plenty of history & some all-time great players from the early AFL years & while they weren’t great, they could still put together some 5 year periods of being good. Y’know, they weren’t like, Browns or Lions bad.
I might get their eventual but in the meantime secret base just finished a series on them if your interested
Good to know thanks for telling me
I remember the Marty Shottenheimer era.
Boy did this age well
41:43 watching this after super bowl 58 is erie
I just wish Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Marcus Peters (in his prime), and Tyrann Mathieu were playing with Chris Jones to go along with that great offense that they've had the past few years. Can you imagine how many Super Bowls they would win!
And Jamaal..
The 2012 Chiefs going 2-14 with 6 probowlers is insane
41:12 - TubFrog is the reason they won. Gave them all the motivation they needed. This is the man we must go after!!!

Thank you for shining a light on how much pain we went through before the glory years.
@@jokerjonesjjp5522 the rare Chiefs complete team
If Mahomes had a top 5 defense (like Brady had with the Pats), there’s not a doubt in my mind that they play in the last 5 Super Bowls.
Aged like fine wine
Yep, this has very much been my experience growing up in KC, essentially becoming a fan at the start of this vid’s timeline😂 I don’t think outsiders will ever be able to understand our love and appreciation of this team, from the highest highs in the league, to some of the lowest lows
I must say that these longer videos you have been doing on franchises have been incredible! I am very happy I found your channel and I hope you get lots of subscribers because you deserve it my friend.

A True Rebuild
Ur a visionary bruv
Yeah I knew they were a better QB away from becoming title contenders.
bro they just won another superbowl
Update: we got there. HOW BOUT THOSE CHIEFS
Thank you for illuminating how miserable it's been for chiefs fans all their lives, I know that I'm lucky to be seeing this amount of success since I was 16.
No kidding. I never thought I would ever see the Chiefs win a playoff game in my lifetime, let alone win a superbowl. These truly are the golden years for Chiefs fans.
@@matthewcrispinwordofGodI’ve been a Chiefs fan for 40+ years & I remember honestly telling people that, while I love em, I didn’t think I’d live to see them make an AFC Championship Game, much less win a Super Bowl. To have played in 3 of them in the last 4 years is so far beyond any drunken fantasy I ever had that I actually have trouble believing it sometimes🤣

Coach Reid is astounding. Great Coach.
You're killing it with these vids. You do such a good job at putting these together. Thank you, and whoever else helps you work on them, for making such interesting vids
I actually shed tears when the Chiefs beat the Titans in the AFC championship game. I couldn't believe we actually made it to the super bowl.
The most underrated RUclipsr out there
You should make a video on the Bills and how close them come to winning postseason games but still falling short
'Personally I think they need one more super bowl'. Well, they got one, and are now well on their way to a 3-peat.
14:30 Nice job mentioning the 2012 Chiefs blackout game! That's kind of a forgotten piece in Chiefs lore that's not known by outside fans.
32:22 That ended up also being Andrew Luck's final game in the NFL
Anyways, great video TubFrog!
41:13 “personally, I think the chiefs still like one more Super Bowl to be considered a dynasty”
Guess what happened.
This aged well very well researched.
We have had our struggles. Makes every day we have with our team today a huge blessing.
Oh yes, I remember that too. Chiefs fans really stood up to the establishment and demanded much-needed change.
As a Chiefs fan who has been watching long enough to have seen all 3 Superbowl wins I want to tell you that I really enjoyed your video.
And then, there they are, back in the Superbowl AGAIN :D

You forgot to mention when they got Alex smith, that’s like the 6th 49ers backup or former starting QB the Chiefs have gotten from San Fran🤣 it’s a whole history with these two teams
Man, if only we hadn't taken Todd Blackledge in '83. That's gotta be one of the biggest draft blunders of all time. Probably also influenced the decision not to draft another QB in the first round until Mahomes.
Man I remember these days as a chiefs fan the Matt cassel days and consistently losing to the colts, and that year in 2013 we had it 😔
I’ll never forget that I told everyone I worked with at the time that Mahomes was going to be the next best thing. We started a fantasy league that year (2018) and I drafted him in like the 9th or 10th rounds. Nobody I worked with believed me. I’ll always remember that
I love that, even today, whenever Mahomes does something incredible, my dad will say, “You said he would be great the whole time, from right after they drafted him..”
I didn’t know anything about him when KC selected Mahomes in the draft, but it only took about 2 minutes of video research to see that this kid was going to be special.
Dynasty!!!!
This was very nostalgic for a Chiefs fan who grew up watching the stadium fireworks from my front porch.
It would be cool if you did a video about the Jaguars and the random almost Superbowl runs they had in the 90s and 2017

Great history of the chiefs and you are a good story teller !
“Need another Super Bowl”
I made other comments but wanted to say two things Mr. Frog
1. Nice, well done video
Not a dynasty yet. We’ll see on Sunday.
Dynasty it is.

As a Bears fan, I both look forward to and dread a video on the Bears.

@@tubfrog at least there would be some championship wins in there.
I love that you say "Washington" when reference the commanders old name and its appreciated. Great job!
