    • @user-ff2mu4fh4v

      It's actually industrial design, so you have to study that specific field. Though studying graphic design or engineering would be helpful but wont get you hired as an industrial designer.

    One thing that I don't understand is it takes a lot of skills, years of experience (both hand-on and theory), and proper education in university to be an industrial designer. BUT Google showed that they get paid less than a UX designer (which... you can take one of a 3 month intensive bootcamp and you can come from any background)... I kinda feel like its really weird.

    Your friends aren't charging enough. Granted, they may not live in a super expensive area. Mid-Senior level Industrial Designers with 4-7 years experience make around $80k-$110k in San Francisco. Independent contractors anywhere between $75-$120/hr with the same level of experience.

    I live in Mexico City, where an intern in a studio may be payed from absolutely nothing to 250 USD per month (about 10 USD per day). (Considering minimum wage in Mexico is 4 USD per day). Funny enough, the biggest, most famous studios in the City often have unpaid interns, because they are "paying with experience" as if they were making us a favor letting us work there.

      @ed3R77 7 лет назад

      I'm a last year industrial design student. You can expect to build a lot, A LOT of things. But they will be more like models of products in the first year (non functional) and towards the second to last year you'll be making prototypes (functional) of products. These prototypes may include some simple engineering mechanisms, as simple as how a foldable table will actually fold easily without affecting aesthetics (not as simple as it sounds) all the way to computer programming (mainly programmed by someone else) needed to output information on a screen based on physical input on the product (your job here is to develop the concept of such product and determining how it will be built, how the components will interact with each other and most importantly, with the user), etc... Its complexity will depend on the type of product, of course.

    In San Francisco the low is typically 50-58 p/y, the average is about 70-73 and the high is about 90-100 but it really depends on the company and how much experience you have, like you might get a higher pay if you’ve had an internship or other types of jobs relating to Industrial design before whatever company you’re applying to

    what is the difference between Product Design and Industrial design?

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  7 лет назад +23

      Great questions. They're the same thing.

    • @SlNlST3R
      @SlNlST3R 7 лет назад +20

      I am a Senior Industrial Designer and have come across this exact question hundreds of times. Here is my best explanation.
      Product design is the umbrella term for the User Experience (UX). Industrial design falls under product design. For example a Dentist is a special kind of doctor, but the umbrella field is Medical. Another example, vehicle is the umbrella term for a means of transport that gets you from point A to B. A truck is a specific kind of vehicle, but you cannot say vehicles are trucks.
      So it's Product Design = Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Textile Design, Ceramic Design, etc..
      So does this mean that graphic design, architecture, interaction design, interior design, landscape architect, fashion design, digital content creation, all fall under the same product design? Technically YES. There's really only two basic things people buy, services or products. So if you're not consuming or paying for somebody's time or knowledge (i.e. lawyers, doctors, consultants, etc.) it's a product. Hope this helps.

      Engineers made the blackberry. Product designers made the iPhone. Which one is more successful? Seeing engineers attempt to do product design is hilarious at best.

      I'm from Indonesia. Here in Jakarta, Indonesia it ranging from 3500$ (starting) to around 18000$ (high level) a year (or more if you have "celebrity designer" status). Actually it's not bad considering 3500 a year is already above minimum wage (around 225$ a month), and living cost is quite cheap (except for housing ). But in other cities here it's often not that good. But the hardest part is not about the paycheck, but to find a job, considering industrial designer is still a rare gig and even some of the national big company still doesn't think they need Industrial designers role.

      @puma , where about are you planning to apply? I have studied industrial design in both Monash and Swinburn in Melbourne. Both are really fun but both Uni approach industrial design very differently.
      Monash - More automotive, conceptual, the big idea.
      Swinburn - More hands on based. Really want to you to get into little details. Very into their hands on craftsmanship.
      Salary for industrial designer starts off around 35K+ and they vary depending on the company. It also depends on if industrial design is a primary and secondary to the business.
      Company of course will value you more if you (the industrial designer) is the primary support of the company.

    I know a majority of designers at tech companies up north make on average 75k a year. 60k fresh out.
    Other options, move to NYC/Washington.
    That's about it.
    You could move out of the country, where U.S designers aren't looked at with much merit, because apparently we don't know anything bout design.

It has everything you need to know to build a good foundation such as drawing cleaner more confident lines and figures, understanding perspective, proportions and simplifying objects into primitive shapes. If you learn these basic skills the sky is the limit.

    Industrial Designer only make their Clients rich. I know.. because i am one... when i see millions of the the Clients' product get manufactured and churned out for years and decade.. You will know that Clients get much richer than Designers.

    Asiam ppl are nuts, when study or got appointed of one job position, the only thing matter is about money, not for the art of work, not for inspiration of work that could give amazing work result. I feel shame on them

    That salary you mentioning is trash 😂 --Are you guys getting paid?

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  3 года назад

      I didn't make it clear enough in the video but these anecdotal rates I mentioned are from other college level students and newly grads... However money is relative. Whatever amount the salary is, some people will think it's low and some will think it's high. The average salary in america is a little over 50k which is roughly 25/hr.

      @@JimmyHuynhdesign I think you should consider taking down this video, I almost think you are talking people out of this industry lol. Stop comparing with American average, we not paying high tuition for barely beating average. GLHF

      @@SSSHHHNNN haha well that adds to my argument that more students should know salary numbers before paying way too much for an expensive schools:)
