I grew up Mormon and the whole time I was reading I was getting creepy church vibes. Lo and behold, there's a whole thing in the acknowledgments about how the show/cult was a metaphor for what she went through growing up Mormon. It was a really well done analogy and I really enjoyed this book. I will have to check out Hide.

It definitely had that vibe. That’s one of the reasons I like to read the afterword/acknowledgements. Getting a bit of insight into why the writer wrote the story is very interesting to me.☺️📚

I loved "Hide" so much. I'm glad you liked Mister Magic because I didn't end up finishing it. I should have stuck with it lol. Great review!

I really liked the weird premise of this one. I also liked how it ended. I won’t say anything though in case you do return to it.☺️📚

I can really see this as a real internet mystery that people would investigate about an old weird kid's show.
P.S. I also LOVE the Muppets haha

I haven’t read Mister Magic yet but it’s on my tbr. I picked it up bc it reminded of the game Welcome Home! It’s an interactive alt reality game about a puppet show that’s lost its footage and you basically do your own internet investigation 😂

@@marlynxo that game sounds pretty cool. This book is super weird, hope you enjoy it!☺️📚

I’m going to leave two comments, cause one will have major spoilers, I hope that’s okay.
I wanted to say it was you saying you loved this book that made me finally pick it up. I’d seen so many bad reviews, and even though I have loved many books others didn’t, I just hesitated on this one. But because you loved this book, and you got me to finally read it (oh wait, I didn’t say yet, I absolutely loved Mister Magic, thank you!), I wanted to recommend Ghost Radio by Leopoldo Gout to you. I initially got the recommendation from ShadesofOrange here on RUclips. I feel like if someone likes Mister Magic or even Episode Thirteen, they will probably also love Ghost Radio. It’s not the same plot, but it’s weird, takes you on a trippy ride like the other books do, I thought it was incredible really. I hate the low Goodreads score, I think Ghost Radio isn’t for everyone (obviously), but I get discouraged when people only want a straight forward ordinary plot and then downgrade a book when it’s not that. There’s so much depth and meaning and emotion in Ghost Radio, it’s like art to me. And the audiobook is the way to go, not only are there snippets of a radio show, but Pedro Pascual narrates it and it’s amazing.
Anyways, hope that’s something you’re interested in picking up, and thanks so much for all your reviews and the different kinds of books you read. The longer I’ve been reading I crave different kinds of books, and you’re constantly adding to that part of my TBR!

Glad you enjoyed it! Added Ghost Radio to my never ending tbr. It will probably be some time before I can get to it. Thank you for the book recommendation! ☺️📚

I wanted to love this book felt like nothing really happened? Idk if it went over my head or what but I felt like the ending was a bit anticlimactic

It’s okay that you didn’t love it, I feel like most of this book was about all the emotional damage that the characters had suffered and coming to terms with it. I really enjoyed it. We all have such different tastes in books, I know I’ve definitely not enjoyed books that other people loved and vice versa.

    Major spoilers….
Okay, I read the first few sentences of the authors note before reading Mister Magic, I saw someone recommend to do that, and I’m so glad I did, it absolutely enhanced my reading. From the first chapter I loved it, I could feel it, even with just my basic not so cultish semi Christian upbringing, I could so identify with that idea of truly believing God is there, I saw him didn’t I? I felt him didn’t I? Just paraphrasing her writing there, absolutely beautiful.
But what I don’t get, what I really really don’t get is..okay if this was just a monster story the ending would make perfect sense, but this being an allegory for a cult, why oh why did Val stay? I get the reasons the book gave, but it just feels like sacrificing yourself to keep the cult going, the children are still trapped. Ugh..I hate that I feel this way about it because I absolutely loved everything about this book but that one piece..
Just wondering what your thoughts were, or if that bugged you also? Am I being too critical? In any other story it would make perfect sense, of course I wanted a happy ending with Val and Isaac together, but Val and Kitty being left behind..the only thing I can think of is the cult goes on and people that get out still lose loved ones? Wish I was in a book club for this book…

She stayed because she couldn't bring her sister out, she couldn't save her and the only way to be with her and make sure that the sister wouldn't be mistreated or worse was to be there with her. She just couldn't bring herself to leave her sister behind in there. If Kitty could of been brought out and saved, Val would not have stayed. I get why she did it. In a perfect world they would have been able to get Kitty out of there, but it's not a perfect world. I actually thought this made the ending a bit more meaningful, even though it is not the outcome I had hoped for either.
