- All you need to know about Sun Wukong, the Monkey King and main protagonist of Black Myth: Wukong. This game by the studio Game Science is inspired by the 1592 Chinese novel, "Journey to the West" and looks incredible. I cannot for its release in August!
You can find a list of translations of this novel here: journeytothewestresearch.com/...

Chinese here. Really fascinated and impressed with how much and how well you know the story. Also really grateful that youtubers like you are spreading the knowledge to people who otherwise will only play the game for fun. Really hope the game is gonna be as impressive as it looks in the trailer lol.
A twist that very few people know about the story: with the novel being so old and classic, it’s no surprise that it’s being analyzed to the bone by scholars and fans. A very popular and commonly accepted interpretation is that while on the surface, the story is about four travelers’ overcoming difficulties, defeating monsters and find buddhism, countless details and questionable plots in the novel actually hint the readers that this is all a power game between the gods to gain advantage and popularity of their teachings. In a way the monkey is powerful, strong and taller than the sky, he’s just a pawn being manipulated by those with true power and he doesn’t know it.
Thank you so much for your high compliment, I really appreciate that! And that's such a cool interpretation of what the story is about, I will definitely have to read up more on that!
i'm hearing this isn't actually based on Journey to the West but the sequel novel.
@@siekensou77 No, Black Myth is adapted from Journey to the West, because the 2023 trailer clearly states that it is adapted from the original Journey to the West.
@loongli5102
Then the question remains.. who is the monkey we are playing as if we arent sun wukong himself.
@@siekensou77 the monkey we are going to play is "tian ming ren" literally translated as the fated one. in a nutshell it's not the "sun" rather someone else with fate to do something to reverse the chaotic world where the real "sun" maybe being trapped and lost his divinity, ending up being that "old man". And I'm just guessing the more enemies we defeat the higher chance we will see one day the "old man" picks up his faith and picks up the iconic "jin gu" that golden ring once on his head also which will be epic!
I knew it was a good idea to subscribe to you. After 1200 ps4 hours on elden ring, bought a ps5 for 2 things. Shadow of the erdtree, and black myth wukong
Aww thank you so much! Absolutely can't wait for this game, I'm also playing Shadow of the Erdtree now so looks like we've got the same tastes!
Remember seeing the first Alpha-Build of this game in 2020.
Four years later, we'll be able to experience it.
Nice and calm voice. Well-organised storytelling and a good study of the mythology. Love your work.
Thank you so very much! 🙏
I am glad videogames actually can bring None Asians (since most Asia already have read Journey to the West and also Three Kingdoms before) to get interested in Chinese literature. So far Three Kingdoms (due to videogames like Dynasty Warrior and Sangokushi) got the interest of war historians.
But now we see Journey to the West being taken interest by a modern audience since the 1970 after the Chinese animation "Uproar in Heaven" that was shown in various Eastern European countries.
Hope in future, Water Margin will be taken interest as it basically Chinese Robin Hood
Er Lang the warrior deity with Three Eyes is interesting in that he is the guy who strike thunder at unfilial sons and daughters who doesn't treat their parent nice. Thus the word "Being hit by Lighting" actually refer to him. He is a deity for Filial duty and his black dog is there to scare away evil spirit. Before the fight with Er Lang, Monkey fought against Nezha the Boy with the Firewheel and spear. He is a forever little boy who wear a "Bib" to cover his belly it an outdated outfit for little kids that cover the belly but expose your butt.
By the way, the Crescent Moon headband and his outfit actually looks more like "Sandy" Sha Wujing the 3rd Disciple of Tripikata who is a sea demon. I think it could be an unlockable extra outfit for Monkey or maybe storyline wise he is wearing this outfit?
Yeah I wonder about the different outfits and how he’ll unlock them, by defeating enemies? Thanks so much for your comment and sharing your knowledge about the story!
I've been really curious about this game since it was announced. It's a concept that hasn't been explored much in the video game medium-the last time that I recall being Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. The idea is intriguing to me, especially since the story has been on my reading list for a while. I just hope the combat isn't Souls-like, lol; that's not my cup of tea.
You HAVE to read the story! The audiobook is so amazing, too. Narrator does an amazing job. And the combat is actually going to be more like God of War which is great news to me because I also am not a fan of Souls combat!
So glad you made a Black Myth Wukong video, and I'm looking forward to whatever future content you make from this game! It's my most anticipated game this year, outside of the elden ring DLC
Thank you so much!! Yeah I can’t wait for this game, definitely the one I’m looking forward to the most!
The first background brings back so many memories.
It was so amazing they used it. Beautiful version of the song.
Been a fan since your dive into Elden Ring, can't wait for all the videos of Black Myth coming up over the next few months. ❤
Congrats on the award win as well - well deserved.
Thank you so much!! ❤️
Chinese native here 👋 it's heavily implied that the story of black myth happens many years after journey to the west. For example one of the spider demon from the original JJTW showed up in a CG and she is very old now. The team behind game science made a different game in the past called 斗战神 thats also an alternative interpretation of JJTW so thats like their thing 😂
Oh yeah I noticed that hint about the spider demon! And she says something about having met him before. Good hint if Game Science has done an alternate storyline like this before!
I heard that it is more a "black myth" or a different retelling of what happened, like a hidden story, and that maybe the Wukong we play is not the real one, but one of the copies of him the six-eared macaque, passing through the same thing, remember one of the trailers showed two Wukongs so ours must be the macaque
I have some details about this game to share with you. 1. The buildings in this game are ancient buildings modeled through 3D scanning in various parts of China. 2. Do you remember the headless man in one of the pvs? We guess he should be Lingji Bodhisattva. 3. The dragon man who painted the mural is Lan Cai, possibly a son of the Dragon King of Jinghe River. 4. The name of the big-headed monk who appears in the latest PV is Elder Jin Chi. He is the monk who wanted to set fire to steal the cassock in the novel. The wolf with the flame knife is named Guang Zhi, and he is Jin Chi’s student.
To think this monkey and his gang has inspired so many adventures and writers.
I absolutely love them. My first introduction to Monkey was actually Dragonball Z, I just didn't know it at the time!
They had not even shown Sun Wukong nemesis yet, the Ox/Bull King. Or his traveling friends: The Pig, Sandy/Fishguy and the main character himself Tang Sanzang/Tripitaka/the monk. This game is gonna be insane.
Can’t wait to see the main cast!!
This is such a good video i suddenly got hit with “seek wukong lore” fever
This Game Looks amazing, and Yo I remember watching a bunch of Monkey king media growing up. Thats a good sign there using the source material (with a bit of something new)and not a retelling from a retelling.
You have such a soothing voice. You should venture into audio-books or voice acting (specifically as the narrator in a video game)!
Thank you so much!! I would die to get a chance at doing that! ❤️
No really he's right I also agree. The way you narrate on the game was masterfully done. You explained it so well.
Great vid as always kitetales! I’ve been noticing a lot of people talking more and more about the Monkey King and the Journey to the West which is so awesome. I’m also catching up with the recent livestreams.
Thanks so much, Jake!! Yeah I really hope this game will encourage more people to check out the original story, it's just so good!
I am your Chinese audience, and your video is done very well. I really like your voice❤❤❤
你好! I am so happy to have you, thank you!! ❤️
More black myth wukong content please!! 🙏 I grew up watching journey to the west and I’m in love with this game
It looks so incredible, I'm really excited for it!
@@kitetales it does! But I’m on Xbox so I gonna have time to wait a little longer to able to pay it 😭
"In Eastern mythology, Sun Wukong is regarded as the God of War, and after becoming a deity, he is bestowed the title 'Victorious Fighting Buddha'."
Beautiful. I’ve been waiting til the dlc settles in before I tried this game out!
Thank you so much!! 2 more months for this one, that’s just enough time to lightly scrape the surface of the DLC 🤣
Your voice is incredibly beautiful; it has such a soothing and captivating quality. this's from one of your fans in China.
Thank you so much, so happy to have some fans in China! ❤️
你的声音很好听,你的视频解说内容也很详细。做得好👍
Thank you so much for your kind words, I very much appreciate it ❤️
Really happy you made such a detailed video on this game! Your insights are impressive and I’m looking forward to more 😊
Thank you so much!! I am fully ready to immersive myself in this world ❤️
You have a beautiful voice, babe. And don't stop making videos about ,,Black Myth Wukong" please 🙏.
Thank you!! Looking forward to making more videos for it!
@@kitetales I'm glad to hear that beautiful. I ❤️ U.
I'm aware of journey to the west but am more familiar with the stories inspired by it. You're break down of the references to the original story was really cool.
Thank you so much!
I am Chinese and at first I thought it was the timeline of the original Journey to the West, but after releasing more details, we guessed that it was the story that happened after they completed their mission to the West. This is a guess from Chinese players, hope to help you😊
This voice is so nice and gentle!
I'm glad you're excited about this game too, I am looking forward to it for much the same reason. I have to admit I am enamored by journey to the west though I haven't ever finished it haha. I hope to get it again and actually get to the end.
I can’t wait for it!!
Really looking forward to this! Graphics look incredibly photorealistic. Hard to believe that western developers tried to bribe the creators of this game to try to include forced “inclusion” narratives and ideology! It has no place in such a beautiful Chinese game!
Are you kidding me what?? I didn’t know that!! Oh no I hope nothing came of that, I’ll have to go look into that now
great story intro! plus your voice sounds so "sweet"
Thank you so much! ❤️
Great to see some Wukong love on this channel! This game looks phenomenal in every regard and while I'm still a little skeptical, I really hope it will live up to everyone's expectations!
My fingers are crossed so hard for it!!
we await you, sun wukong!! cant wait hypetraaain!!!
One of the most popular rumours among Chinese community is that the player is the form of Sun Wukong’s one spirit, as in Buddhism there are two. Whether or not, we already can see from current trailers and gameplay videos that those real immortals have lost their power, while Yaoguai (evil monsters), as our enemies, have taken in charge of temples and credibility of Buddhism. Some bosses are immortals being transformed by combing their original shapes with other demons. So from many details we are sure that the game happens in a totally reverted world where evils replace goodness.
That is a great theory, I can see that too! I wondered why the Black Bear Demon’s eyes were red, and he appears to be at his post that he was assigned to after Guanyin subdued him, and I also saw a monster that might be Sandy that had red eyes and flaming red hair, but was missing the skull necklace which would imply that this happened after the initial fight. Very interesting clues and I can’t wait to see what’s going on!
Thanks for this divine video and voice over! I rival your excitement for this rendition of Wukong
Thank you so much!! 🙏❤️
great video thank you
As always a very good video with so much attention to detail!
You just remimdes me,
I had a very nice anotated edition of the xiyouji, but I lend it to someone. I have to get it back.
Oh my gosh send pics when you do get it back!! It’s one of my favorite stories now ❤️
WOW the game looks amazing! Thanks for the novel summary as I am so unfamiliar with it.
Thanks so much Emerald!!! Yeah doesn’t it look awesome?! Good news for us is that the combat will be more like God of War and not Souls based 🤣
Good idea to jump on this now while everyone is busy gooning over Elden Ring DLC (including myself) 😊
2 more months!! People are beating the DLC SUPER fact though dang!
Great video ♥️
Thank you so much!!
Idk if they’ll do it but based on the one ending I’d consider this game a spiritual sequel to Sekiro
You forgot to mention that in an attempt to curb the monkey kings behaviour, has invited to heaven as you stated, but was also promised a high position in the heavenly court.
But instead of fulfilling that promise they bestowed the title of heavenly stables stable hand.
That enraged monkey so he started to cause havoc in heaven. He stumbled upon the peach gardens where heavenly immortality granting peaches were grown and being a monkey at heart, he consumed copious amounts of the ripest and largest peaches thus gaining immortality.
In the process he disrupted the preparation of a heavenly feast where the peaches were to be presented to guests. However since monkey had already consumed the choice peaches no good ones were left for the feast.
Then he ended up fighting the heavenly host as you described.
Yeah I had a longer more detailed overview in my first script but didn’t have enough footage to stretch so I cut down to a shorter version. Will absolutely be doing a longer video once the game is out and I have more to work with!
I love your voice!! ❤
Thank you so much! 😊💙
I think the different monkey is mostly likely the manifestation of the original one like he is the mortality that wukong left to reach buddhahood which gain physical form and there was a theory which i believed it which say that six eared macaque is the manifestation of wukong shadow like what wukong coukd have possibly be if he didn't meet xuanzang and that killing him is basically killing his demonic personality , greediness and rage which make sense
Your voice is such a angelic ❤🖤😘💝
Thank you so much! ❤️
Alot of gaps but it's a decent recap
Yeah there is no way 100 chapters of Journey to the West can be wrapped up in 2 minutes 😅
nice work i like you voice~
Thank you so much!! 🙏
i dont think it has anything to do with a mulitverse it might just have been an outfit thingy but i can be completely wrong since this is an adaptation of the novel with the dev haveing a different telling of the story and yes there is a imposter monkey the six eared macaque who is on par with wukong and can imitate wukong perfectly only buddha can tell the difference
on the side note theres a movie called a chinese odssey and a chinese odssey 2 on netflix starring stephen chow base on the story of the monkey king its a good comedy movie i recomend it
Yes I love the Stephen Chow movie!! ❤️
So I unfortunately had to cut a bunch of stuff from the video going more into why I think there is an alternate timeline for time constraints, but there are a few scenes that make me think this: the Black Bear Demon that Guanyin subdued and turned into a guard for the mountain already appears to be serving that post when Wukong fights him; there looks like there might be an entity controlling Sandy during that fight, and the spider sisters talk about having met their groom before long ago. Also I don’t see any presence of Xuanzang even though so many of the characters in this footage appear after Sun Wukong becomes his disciple.
the voice is so catchy!
Thank you so much! ❤️
This video taught me much more about the monkey king than Goku ever did!
No one kills Krillan!
I wanna see Erlang in Black Myth Wukong
YES!! He’s going to be so cool.
Beautiful voice, interesting monkeys, great game
I think we playing new monkey who following sun wukong journey, i red that this game going be trilogy, each game going follow different Chinese mythology , this just chapter 1 of black myth series
I can't wait to find out why there are two monkeys.
Same! People think it’s the imposter from the story but I think something else is going on completely
For the next Chinese mythology game I want if it's Chinese is a nezsha game after watching it on Netflix I think it cool
I haven’t seen that I might have to check it out!
6:59 that’s not the pen, it’s incense that he burn( lit up ) for enshrinement
Yeah that’s my bad I messed that up while I was recording, meant to say same technique as using his hair for the pen transformation 😊
Did you post the link for journey to the west translation novels?
Yes!! Just realized I forgot to do that, the link should be up now!
@@kitetales thank you so much!
How hard is the game? Compared to Sekiro, Lies of P and Elden Ring
I haven't played it yet, but I've read that that combat style will be more like God of War which I'm excited about!
He is embodiment Lord hanuman son of the Wind god Vayu. Sun Wukong was in a crystal egg which was hatched by the wind. He is immortal same as lord hanuman.
This is going to be a souls like game correct?
It’s actually going to be more like God of War, which I am REALLY happy about because I love that series.
Your voice ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you!! ❤️
7:00 is not“pen”,it's the “incense”,the intention of offering incense
Oh shoot I meant to put an edit during post I meant technique not pen but forgot to add that; yes same transformation technique he uses during the challenge with Buddha with plucking his hair
He needed to face Buda because no one can stop him anymore. After his capture he went through many ways of killing him but instead it made him even stronger so that Buda was needed to be called to deal with WuKong. So your story missing a crucial part in your summary.
Multiverse? no its not Marvel. The story teller is only implying that the story that has been told is a or might be a lie and he is going to tell the real story of what happened. So no other verse.
Other than that I am happy with your lovely voice story telling. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!!
IGN don't like this
Good let’s the woke losers cope
Go monkey king go😂
If it doesn't have swimsuit skins I'm not buying it 🤣
Sun Wukong in a bikini would be a sin in so many religions 🤣
Game science should have asked u to dub, your voice is so q
That would be a dream!! ❤️
subscribed.
Thank you so much!!
take my fukin money and give me the collecter version!!
Exactly this! 👏
There is no master Subodhi in the novel, please don't assign some random Indian god as Wukong's master..
That is his name translated into the English translations, Patriarch Subodhi. Which translation version are you using?
This is the English translation by Anthony C. Yu who is a very acclaimed scholar in both Eastern and Western literature and it is considered to be the most accurate translation: journeytothewestresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/the-journey-to-the-west-wu-chengen_-anthony-c.-yu-the-journey-to-the-west-volume-1-university-of-chicago-press-2013.pdf
@@kitetalesyou could find a version of Lin yutang. The master puti laozhu is a shenxian of Chinese who is more different than India's and is similar to the god of West, but his reputation isn't same as God. I don't know if you understand what I say. My English isn't good.
Whether his name is Xuputi or Subhodi how does it make a difference? Are they not all simply translations of the same sanskrit?
@@kitetales I think languages are all hardly translatable, especially when it comes between Chinese and English. Too much information and details are just simply left out, even a simple name in Chinese contains extra info rather than just some phonological symbolic tag of an object or person in English.
