I know I'm simple. Maybe that's why I choose to live a simpler life, closer to nature. All those numbers and letters. All that language and geometric technology. Civilization built itself on straight lines and human instigated order in its attempt to control and thereby profit. If it weren't for those linear cities people have constructed we'd be living out in the forest and jungle, hunting and gathering, living life as nature intended, revolving in natural circles instead of navigating artificial squares.
Few years ago, as I was camping in such a magnificent wilderness, I had just that same thought about myself being an aperture of the universe on itself. Now I discover Alan Watts. Curious to read more of his thoughts.
I am You and You are Me and We are here. This is 313 of a Consciousness of the Spirit from the Mind of Alpha and Omega as Dark/Light that came from a Union of Love as One. This is The Law of One!
My art professor taught me that nature employs organic shapes. Fractals and organic shapes are in nature. Straight lines are rare in nature. Humans use straight and curved lines to build over the top of nature. Yet, we are most attracted to organic shapes because that is what we always saw until we perfected the use of straight materials.
True, we feel separate but each of us is ONE with the whole universe. Actually there is no lines of separation in nature, only thought creates these separations in attempt to understand and thereby to control the universe from which this same thought springs. This feeling of separation, which Alan Watts admirably describes in many of his talks, conjugated with science leads inevitably to the destruction of nature and therefore of humanity itself.
@@daddycool228 In the end it is all play. But it could be for the contrast. Like being hungry and cold and then getting a nice meal at the fireplace. Or being sick for a long time and then eventually getting your health back. This play of separation can get very dark, but apparently these are, for now, the flavours of consciousness and not being able to know it all is one of them.

I've listened to Alan Watts for a long time. This lesson is by far my favorite. It really breaks down, with clarity, the understanding of our realm and our place in it. When one begins to understand that they can never really fully understand, well; that's a knowledge thsts a wisdom that makes the heart ache. Thank you Dr. Watts. Your clarity of thought is that of the best minds ever crossed this plane.
I just love his use of the word wiggly. We have convinced ourselves we have control over our lives and our world but that isn't true at least not entirely.
I think it's important to keep in mind that when he says "failure", it's only because we've defined "success" within the context of control and improvement. That being said, humans are just being humans the way flowers are flowers, trees are trees, cats are cats, and bears are bears. Humanity flows like the rest of nature, we're just doing it in a unique way. Even if that flow leads to self-destruction, it's still simply nature being nature.
It's obvious to me now, that at least some of my teachers and at least one of my parents, must have listened to this man back in the sixties and seventies, because they used to talk to me in this way, when I was little, and I have carried these notions with me at the back of my mind, like old toys in the loft, until now when I am letting go of career and struggle.

"...and we may have to come to the alarming conclusion that, the universe is smarter than we are." i have always been of fan of the thought that the universe is going to do whatever the universe is going to do. we are nothing more than passengers, along for the ride. we are reminded, in this summation, that it isn't our 'job' to try and fix what isn't broken or control what isn't to be controlled. but instead, simply to enjoy the ride and not lose sight of the things that should be the most important to us.... none of which includes locking our minds away in thought regarding things that truly, do not matter.
I followed and adored Watts for a long time until I found he just plays with words to confuse, but gives no deeper meaning of consequence. Humans like squares because it's the most efficient way to be, to get the most from any stretch of land. Nature 'wiggles' because it has no power to be efficient, and therefore is chaos, a survival of the fittest, the strongest. If humans would 'wiggle' people would die due to lack of food and lack of housing. Just see how California 'wiggles' these days and watch the junkies live in tents with no oversight, an ever expanding chaos, and people are dying.
I suspect there are far too many people out there who have never even wondered about it or asked the questions. Hence the path mankind is on. That or they've seen the truth of things and simply ignored it.
Absolutely true, we've have stop to think. Yeas ago i was wondering who have the same similar thought as mine, Alan Watts was It amazing how little we all think and don't see the big picture, i use to doubt myself before 2014 and from my past experience everything that i felt and imaging was true
Thats where I'd be grateful ending up in my 40's or 50's like Alan. Just strolling around with my backpack like a kid on a field trip, yet who got accidentally left behind and gets to just enjoy the experience of reality. I'm already similar to Alan as i'm one of the few enlightened people on the planet but the moment, if it's meant to be, has not yet arrived where I get to enjoy that unplanned field trip. I already think about all this stuff though.
One of the messengers our Creator has used throughtout the centuries to instruct us on the true path to enlightment (spiritual and religious to some). Even though we see inequality, violence and war in our daily lives, believe it or not this is the best version of humanity that´s ever inhabited this planet. Be proud you are a member of this generation and don´t forget your purpose is to leave it a better place than when you arrived here.
The squiggly hypothesis joins the gaia hypothesis to become the squiggly gaia hypothesis. First time listening to Alan. Now 70 and a wildlife biologist professionally and at heart I have listened to and read the words of great thinkers. mystics, scientists and theologians. My simple conclusion which sells no books, provides no career in university or church is that we are animals like all the other animals on planet earth unfortunately with a brain capacity that has outstripped its usefulness in nature to survive, reproduce and die as the primary mission of all living organisms. So now we have spent the last 30,000 plus years in what might be called civilization developing all this mythological garbage about why were here, where we will go upon death when all other life has clarity in its living and does not challenge its mission to survive reproduce and die to maintain its species. This is on a planet that has been here some 4.39 billion years more than our species.
“Things become complicated only when we think about them”, lol! Coming from a man who, no doubt, spends more time thinking about things than most people, I’m sure. Ironic. This is not to say that I don’t find Mr. Watts insightful and inspiring, I do. I am grateful for thinkers such as Alan Watts. I love how he articulates his ideas and thoughts.
He was getting at we over complicate things because we refuse to accept it as it really is. We say oh it's really complicated, no, it's not. Truth is that which can't be simplified further. We need to believe things are complicated so we can believe were intelligent.
Yes is it not odd to you , that humans are a part of nature and yet we are trying to separate our selves from our Nature , which got us hear collectively from a Conscious level of awareness to who you are in relation too I AM!!!
My academic career and motivation is in showing how it is a wiggly complex structure like a brain gives rise to the experience of perception. Ultimately, there is no reason to believe the straight lines and languages Alan and lots of mystics shun are themselves not part of "the wiggle." I would have loved to have debated Alan on this. Side note: he and Joseph Campbell influenced each other about the meaning of straight lines and squares. They were friends, after all. Campbell describes something like seeing a planet and wondering if there's conscious life on it, then seeing squares and right angles, concluding there must be.
Fascinating thought, I've often thought about myself. Like the cells of your body each one alive doing it's own thing never knowing its part of something bigger and greater.
I've always had this basic philosophy on life since I was a small child, before I learned the words to begin communicating it. From the general fear and danger of technology as merely tools of control, to the belief in full connectedness and thus responsibility to mother nature and her laws above those manufactured by other people. I never trusted and always questioned institutions of religion, education, government and law, all for the same reason. Now I have learned that my perception was correct, that the history bears truth to the reality we now live in.
Our existence is all connected, we believe that we our manifesting order by reshaping and controlling our environment but true order is adapting, for our existence to last as long as the existence of our environment.
It's kinda weird, the older I get, I increasingly hate urban life and modernity - when I was a kid I used to love scifi shows and movies, technology, big cities....now I'm the complete opposite
Oh, same with me. My childhood was filled up with magical moments throughout all my days, simply because I lived in a very small town surrounded with nature. It had been like heaven.
Standardization is more effective when reproducing "good enough" value. It might be the death of innovation, but uniqueness are just grains of ideas of which only a few are deemed good enough to satisfy the many.
This was recorded 51 years ago. Probably even more relevant now than ever.

The universe is smarter than we are...like is there actually anyone out there that ultimately thinks otherwise?
I suspect there are far too many people out there who have never even wondered about it or asked the questions. Hence the path mankind is on. That or they've seen the truth of things and simply ignored it.

It depends completely on what you mean by "we" and "the universe."

Yes you have it thanks Alan 👍
Think outside and remove yourself from the box ,
Be the Circle , think from beginning to end ,
All is possible ⚔️🕊️
Absolutely true, we've have stop to think.
Yeas ago i was wondering who have the same similar thought as mine, Alan Watts was
It amazing how little we all think and don't see the big picture, i use to doubt myself before 2014 and from my past experience everything that i felt and imaging was true
The "big picture" of our existence in the world. This man SAW it.
hopefully if Alan is right and the universe is smarter than us, then we are on the right track as humanity even when it does not appear so to us.
The universe is smarter than we are ✌
Thats where I'd be grateful ending up in my 40's or 50's like Alan.
@Mohammad S. :)
U never ever lose anything anyone..it's just replacement. N by d time u realise ..u r in a circle already...law of nature keeps u from estrangement
It's not alarming that the universe is smarter than we are. It is comforting.
Alan Watts...I love you. Thank you for entering my heart and mind.🥲💞
The audio, video, and content quality of this post is 2nd to none. Thank you
It came from within
I think this my very favorite ten minutes of Alan Watts.
Enjoyed the visuals and editing. Thank you.
Indeed
Love nature vs. City life
This one was new to me. Alan truly was a genius. Sooooo goood!

Thank you to whoever created this video to correlate so perfectly to Alan Watts's dissertation. Well done!!!
Amazing man

Perfect
“Things become complicated only when we think about them”, lol!
Coming from a man who, no doubt, spends more time thinking about things than most people, I’m sure.
Ironic.
This is not to say that I don’t find Mr. Watts insightful and inspiring, I do. I am grateful for thinkers such as Alan Watts. I love how he articulates his ideas and thoughts.
He was getting at we over complicate things because we refuse to accept it as it really is. We say oh it's really complicated, no, it's not. Truth is that which can't be simplified further. We need to believe things are complicated so we can believe were intelligent.
freaking awesome
Yes is it not odd to you , that humans are a part of nature and yet we are trying to separate our selves from our Nature , which got us hear collectively from a Conscious level of awareness to who you are in relation too I AM!!!
Allan Watts was so ahead of his times.
Love this man’s philosophy 🌌 still learning.

In the 90s I wrote an article called "Life As A Holodeck Character".
Beautiful video. The messages resonate deeply. Everything is truly connected. Thank you.
My ancestors are from the same area Alan Watts created many of his lectures from.
So beautiful 💗 it really is an oasis right outside the major city

Bedankt
Brilliant Mr. Watts.
You have just turned, another, light on for me. 💡🤗💥🤺
good there allan.
Maybe the universe we see is actually Gods brain and we are thoughts and dreams.
Fascinating thought, I've often thought about myself. Like the cells of your body each one alive doing it's own thing never knowing its part of something bigger and greater.
When I had anatony if human body, I remember thinking the same.

the universe in under no obligation to care about your existence
it was here before you and will exist after all of us are gone.
What always strikes me about this man is how remarkably articulate he is.
Nature has much more of a fight to be, to survive. Which out a little wiggle to that motion called life.
Our existence is all connected, we believe that we our manifesting order by reshaping and controlling our environment but true order is adapting, for our existence to last as long as the existence of our environment.
Absolutely amazing! Thank you!
live love light and be tankful so technology can follow
OMG I have listened to hours and hours of Watts but this is the best ever! What a find! Thank you!
I call it us.
Thank you, us.

💯 me too
Standardization is more effective when reproducing "good enough" value. It might be the death of innovation, but uniqueness are just grains of ideas of which only a few are deemed good enough to satisfy the many.
