The secret sauce, horns and tubes.

The reason for the difference in weight is two-fold. KT66 tubes have a significantly different sound than EL84's. EL84's have a more pronounced midrange and lack a bit of low end. KT66's are similar to 6L6 tubes, where they have significantly more low end, the midrange is bit less pronounced (especially compared to an EL84) and the highs are going to be more balanced to the mids. That, in combination with the extra power creates that larger image and adds weight to the sound stage. Man, I'm jealous of that Vincent amp. Great score.

Ive been recommending a will vincent st 70 to a guy who wants to dip his toe into tube gear after hearing my rig. The w.v. seemed like a good place for someone to start with inefficient bookshelf speakers

I have a tube preamp currently running into a solid state amp. Would a tube preamp change the sound of the Dynaco ST-70 amplifier in a bad way? I've always questioned running too much tube gear and haven't had the opportunity to experiment or use different options.

Yes it usually changes the sound but you would have to try it to determine if you like it better or not. Most will use a tube preamp with a solid state power amp rather than a tube power amp with a solid state preamp. The best thing to do is experiment.

      @@drde4010 low hum

Okay, then when you put your ear next to each speaker, spend more time being very careful or slower when moving each dial on the back. I had that same experience and that’s what worked. Also remember that the Heresy are very efficient, so any amount of gain, hum or buzzing with just about any amp may produce some sort of floor noise. My experience is that most tube amps almost behave like antennas and can pick up all sorts of artifacts. Some companies spend tons on resources, filling their amps with internal electronics to help filter things like that out, but ultimately that also affects the sound quality in less desirable ways. What you can also consider which is sometimes what I do myself depending on my mood is plug the Alan Eaton’s into a preamp source. That way the volume control on the front of each can act as a perfect potentiometer. That way you rotate the front volume on each mono a little over half and use the preamp as your primary volume. Plus you don’t have to adjust each volume evenly once they’re set. Even still, you’ll want adjust each rear potentiometer since sometimes no matter what you do with the front volume, the hum may still be there.
