Crown XLS 2502 power amp with Magnepan LRS Plus
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.День назад
With regard to the sound of the Crown amp in this review, my comments are strictly based on the listening experiences using the Magnepan LRS Plus. I did not care for the amp while using it with my Klipsch Heritage speakers for several reasons. With the LRS Plus, it was a magic match. Perhaps it may be an impedance matter, not sure.

    When you are using the Crown, eliminate the Douk volume control altogether. The Crown has it's own controls conveniently on the front, unlike the Parasound, and you eliminate a pair of cables, a second attenuator and less hardware (jacks). Just from a " keep it simple" perspective. My best, always, MrD.

    I had one (SX-950) as a Trade to get someone out of Debt while in Germany in the Army! Traded it and bought a Kenwood Super 11 that sounded great but sucked Eggs when Pushed. By 1982 I gave up on tying to get a SX 1280, never really wanted the 1980, man if I were given a Do Over. Anyway, I heard the SX-9's 125 Watts p/c that was a conservative Rating. SX-9 looks funny but Killed or matched any Receiver in the Barracks, yes even AMPs and Pre-AMPs. My Heresy Speakers are only good for the Rear Channel. The Cornwall's were made for receivers like that. Oh and like My SX-9 sounds better and a Bud messed up speakers because he didn't look at the Volume, no hiss sound to warn him. The second phono is for MC = Moving Coil! This had a Lower Volume than a Moving Magnet stage but had higher Resolution. The Loudness switch is for Lower volume. Reporting back... I went and bought a ToneWinner AD-2Pro+ integrated amplifier, my buddy compares it to a $12,000 Mark Levinson integrated his friend owns, he bought one too. Anyhow, you can hook up two pair of speakers and play both at the same time, Speaker A, Speaker B or A/B, very old school, and very cool. For giggles, I tried running the LRS+ with the Zu's, and was blown away at the sound. The Zu's are sensitive at 95db, where the Maggies are a bit quieter to the Zu's due to sensitivity. But Holy Smokes Doc, running these simultaneously is incredibly pleasing to the ears, the way the Maggies fill and expand the sound is incredible. I liken this to using a subwoofer, an accessory that enhances the overall sound quality. Two weeks ago, I picked up a pair of the Fyne Audio F500SP bookshelf speakers, they are still breaking in, but sound incredible. I went ahead and broke out my Fosi ZA3 amplifiers, I have two, paired them via XLR to the Maggies to take the stress off of my ToneWinner amplifier, and Katy bar the door! Same results, incredible sound. My point? These Maggies, at this price point, and a couple of inexpensive Fosi amps... If I was Magnepan, I would be selling these as audio fillers, or a hotrod for speakers, another accessory like a subwoofer. Everyone that has heard this setup has been very impressed. And these little Fosi ZA3 amps work incredibly well with the Maggies. ;-)

    Driving my Focal Aria 948s with the XLS 2502 for 5 years now. Nothing comes close to it, not even ex Rotel power amp which costs nearly 8 times the price. People say it robs the soundstage depth, I say it doesnt do a thing to the soundstage. If there is no depth in the recording, it will be presented as so. A well engineered power amp wont add to anything, it just supplies power. If I want additional depth, I would be looking at playing with the pre or dac. The only down thing I have to say about the XLS 2502 is the noise floor, I can hear a faint buzz when I put my ears directly next to tweeters but it disappears at 1 feet away. This with the gain knobs at 3 o'clock. I have had the chance to compare it next to my friend's Benchmark AHB2 (on the KEF Reference 1 Meta) and the only difference we heard was the AHB2 had a darker background and played a little cleaner. Dont forget, the Benchmark is regarded by most professionals as the world's most accurate amp, the XLR2502 holds its own at a fraction of the price, and has way more power, something the Reference 1 Metas will never need. It distorts before either of the amps start to lose steam. 😂😂😂

    A preamp is a high gain amplifier that feeds a power amplifier, it doesn't mean that it's just before the power amp, it's PREAMPLIFICATION. It's impossible to have a passive preamp, you can not amplify passively, it's not possible! If you took your isolated pot out of its box and put it in a power amplifier would you call it a preamplifier? Of course not! The reason we have preamplification is to boost low level signals to a level that the power amp can utilize. If we leave out the preamp then the only gain is from the power amp but power amps are not high gain devices so they may not be able to reach their full output power without preamplification. This is why you have to crank up your Nob, your omitting an amplification stage and things like dynamics can suffer. Listen to the dynamic range of your music with and without the a preamplifier, if the power amp doesn't have enough internal gain the dynamic range will suffer. We can measure this with instruments and most people can hear it but not everyone. An alps, or any other potentiometer, in a box is purely resistive. Yes, it can not change the impedance of a circuit BUT it can load a circuit and change it's characteristics just like a pot within a circuit, the only difference is it's in its own box. The only way to stop it from affecting the circuit is with a buffer within the main amplifier or after the pot, your pot in a box IS affecting your circuit regardless whether it's a Shiit or a Nob unless there's a buffer circuit in the line. This is just basic engineering, it doesn't change regardless whether we're talking about amplifiers or oscilloscopes.

      @@mosfet500 according to the definition, it simply means “before the amp”. I also called it a volume control.

    • @mosfet500
      @mosfet500 8 дней назад

      @@drde4010 Only by your definition, not by any industry standard. Again, it's preamplification, would you call a CD player a "preamplifier"? It comes before the amplifier. There's a reason they call it a preamplifier, it preamplifies the signal to a level that the power amplifier can utilize to achieve it's maximum output from. Can a power amp play directly from a record if you add an RIAA stage? No, you need preamplification along with equalization. They call it a power amplifier for a reason, it converts low current to high current that is capable of driving speakers. A preamplifier is a low current device, it's a gain amplifier and in order to have gain, or any amplification for that matter, you need a power source. What you're calling a "preamplifier" the industry calls a line stage. The reason you can get away with bypassing the preamp in some cases like a CD player is because CD players have have high output ~2V. A CD transport requires a DAC, would you call a DAC a preamplifier? It comes before the amplifier, of course not.

      That's interesting. My Modi just quit for no apparant reason. I only use it occasionally, but its gone silent. Is this a Schiit problem? I so want to like them.

      @@orwhat24 you're not alone. Schiit is marred by QC issues since quite a long time. Their new products (new launches and new manufacturing) keep going bust for no apparent reason. I really like their amps and dacs but sending things repeatedly for RMA is a huge PITA and a no-no for me.

    When the Forte II was released I was quick to trade in my Forte Is hoping for improvement. Within two weeks I returned them, finding them a bit brash, with a distinct glare in the upper midrange. Like yourself, I much prefer the smaller midrange horn and the phenolic tweeter. A more relaxed and forgiving presentation than subsequent iterations. Thankfully, someone had performed the same trade and I was able to revert back to the Forte I, despite my own pair having sold while I was auditioning the Forte II! Enjoyed the review. Cheers!

    Just curious, why do the LRS look asymmetrical ? one with one damper and the other with two? Thanks for the review. I run the 1.7 and Ken Kreisel subs. Sound great, but will look into the active xover...

    just gor my ST70 and PAS3 from Kenny. So far I love them both. I did notice on this video that the screws that hold the cover in place are not there. It is suggested to put them back in if you remove the cover. Any thoughts?

      @@wronghandshooter yea mine are currently back in place. When the cover goes on it rests on the upper edge of the screws slightly elevated.

    Is it true about the rumors that I hear, that these old pioneer receivers are louder then what is labeled on the back of them?

    Thanks for your presentation. Forte Four owner here, AND, Martin Logan Classic 9's too. Love line source TRUE dipole designs. Weather foil or electrostatic, there is just something about them ❤.
