  • My new version of the 9-9-6 triplet drum fill is a simple yet fun re-imagining of one of my favorite triplet
    phrases. The 9-9-6 grouping breaks up your average
    triplet fills and gives them new life. Enjoy, practice, and as always... be patient with yourself :) - Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com

    It’s one of the most timeless formulas for a reason. In triplets like this, 9-9-6 also preserves that [dotted-8th + dotted-8th + 8th] mother-rhythm (I guess some ppl call that the Euclidean triplet?). It automatically makes any fill feel more familiar. Having the kick be the voice outlining these pulses makes it feel very accessible and anchored even if the rest was further syncopated to a high degree. Excellently taught

    Why does the metronome count four beats when it is 3/4?

    • @remyzsacka8670
      @remyzsacka8670 Год назад +1

      If written as 8th note triplets, the whole pattern takes 3 beats. However the way he applies it in context is as 16th note triplets in a 4/4 beat. I'll do some math for you really quick in case it's the type of thing you haven't come across before: 16th note triplets means playing 6 notes a beat, and we want to be able to use this fill in any 4/4 context. 4/4 means 4 beats, 4 beats with 6 notes means 24 notes to fill in total. The pattern is 9 notes. Play it twice you get 18 and then just add 6 notes to it however you want. In the video Mike was finishing with KRLKRL. That's why the video is called the 9-9-6 fill, hope that helps !

      @@remyzsacka8670 thank you for explaining. I had to watch at quarter speed to understand it better. It is strange because it is sextuplets but showing it in 3/4. I clipped it here ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxXzNVkX-AXu5pNf49lWRzd1uepAFEZE1d change the speed to 0.25. Following the metronome is confusing because it does align with 3/4. would it be better to show it in 6/8??
