The New 9-9-6 Triplet Fill - Full Drum Lesson

- Опубликовано: 1 май 2023
- My new version of the 9-9-6 triplet drum fill is a simple yet fun re-imagining of one of my favorite triplet
phrases. The 9-9-6 grouping breaks up your average
triplet fills and gives them new life. Enjoy, practice, and as always... be patient with yourself :) - Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com

If I had unlimited funds, I would pay Mike whatever he wanted to be my personal tutor…………there is nobody like him
Try his webpage then. Might be close enough to fulfill your needs
Agreed 😂😂
Triple 🥁 drums blast 🙌 the last brum 10/4
The jazzy vibe between the ghosty snare and ride was making a nice groove down at the low tempo. Sounding really nice!
I do enjoy a hot-dog-on-a-stick. Sessions sounds cool. I play free improv every Sunday and we call those Sunday Sessions, or Church. you make great RUclips content, I imagine it goes even DEEPER in the inner sanctum! lol
OMG I slowed this down to half speed to learn it and Mike talking at half speed is the best thing ever!! Like he had a bit to much to drink 🤪
Thanks for the lesson!!
Just brilliant
This is such a fun lesson! Thanks Mike! You always motivate me to practice.
Pure gold "Butter" thanks
This fill goes really well with a jazz waltz too.
Hi Mike. It took me a week, but i did it! Thank's for your job! Hi. (...from Palermo, Sicilia, 69 years old...).
It’s one of the most timeless formulas for a reason. In triplets like this, 9-9-6 also preserves that [dotted-8th + dotted-8th + 8th] mother-rhythm (I guess some ppl call that the Euclidean triplet?). It automatically makes any fill feel more familiar. Having the kick be the voice outlining these pulses makes it feel very accessible and anchored even if the rest was further syncopated to a high degree. Excellently taught
This makes me go "Duuuu...huhuhu
... uuude".
Amazing, as always………
Thanks Mike😎
This Video is Great! 👍🏽
"Weak links in my armor..." It's my right foot, it's ALWAYS my right foot!
Dig! I have a 9-9-6 thing too man! One of my go-tos. Love this sticking of the groupings.
Bro! You’re super busy. Busier than ever?? Hope we can catch up one of these days my friend. YA MAN
Spicy. Love it!
As always a ver y nice video with impressing knowledge.
Thanks for your labour
Another awesome triplet fill! The snare on the second set of 9 is genius.
Lol -You make me sick Mike. So good. Think you'll ever come to Australia?
Very cool, thank you! 🤩
Love love love it! Steve Jordan does a very similar thing to the 9 chop (he uses a different sticking I believe), but that linear sauce just brings it home! Great stuff, brother 🔥
Amazing Sir
“Brought it to the world in 2014 bro” 😊 I’m gonna be all over this one
Yes sir! Enjoy your matcha :)
@@mikeslessons 3 cups a day 😬
@@mikeslessons Mike, can you briefly elaborate on what sessions is all about? And Carter is one of my favorite drummers AND Spaven is in his own dimension! The 3 of you are a great day!
Awesome lesson/fill, bro! Please stop distracting me now, I should learn for my big maths exam tomorrow, lol. And these lessons are pretty addictive 😅😂
Jokes aside, really loved this one, Mike! 🙃
I mean... drums are math, too. Can you bring your drums to class next term and test out? lol
Hey, Mike...? When are you coming to Australia?
Pure gold!
Far too kind 🙏🍵🙏🍵
Great fill. What heads are on your kit?
nice 🔥🔥
Thank you brother. 🔥🔥🔥
You are very welcome my friend :)
so cool
En 6/8 es una locura!
Nice huhhhhdude. Btw you may always store your drums at our house in Belgium when returning from Italy. For free 😂
i can hear metric modulation when looping the 9 grouping
That'll get you the job =]
It all depends on the job :)
Hey Mike,
Great lesson!! I was hoping if you could explain where you are placing the hi hat click notes while playing the 9.
Great question. They are on the upbeats (the &’s). Hope that helps :)
Or listening to songs like Freedom Jazz dance the Tony version, The Arts, Max in 3/4 time, even Bonham and Mitch had the shuffledy bop in songs.
will this be on your lessons website?
It has been for quite some time.
I think my whole repertoire now consists of Mike Johnston inspired chops and ZackGrooves inspired grooves.
Why does the metronome count four beats when it is 3/4?
If written as 8th note triplets, the whole pattern takes 3 beats. However the way he applies it in context is as 16th note triplets in a 4/4 beat. I'll do some math for you really quick in case it's the type of thing you haven't come across before: 16th note triplets means playing 6 notes a beat, and we want to be able to use this fill in any 4/4 context. 4/4 means 4 beats, 4 beats with 6 notes means 24 notes to fill in total. The pattern is 9 notes. Play it twice you get 18 and then just add 6 notes to it however you want. In the video Mike was finishing with KRLKRL. That's why the video is called the 9-9-6 fill, hope that helps !
@@remyzsacka8670 thank you for explaining. I had to watch at quarter speed to understand it better. It is strange because it is sextuplets but showing it in 3/4. I clipped it here ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxXzNVkX-AXu5pNf49lWRzd1uepAFEZE1d change the speed to 0.25. Following the metronome is confusing because it does align with 3/4. would it be better to show it in 6/8??
can you tell me every cymbal's name? pls
Looks like foundry reserve hats 14/15? Foundry reserve ride 20 or 22? Transition ride mikes signature 21 and 20 extra thin hammered crash all meinl I'm would like to know the size of the foundry reserve ride if any 1 knows.
Fantastic video and lesson Mike!
And yeah, Sessions is an incredible thing! Check it out - yeah you random drummer reading my comment! 😅
