Maybe I am starting out backwards but I bought a few bags of scrap leather at Hobby Lobby and am starting with it to get my feet wet.

I think thats a great way to get your feet wet. And you'll probably have some additional scraps leftover from your scraps too! :)

Chris Peers if you still want rivets I searched aliexpress app and found custom rivets 1,000 pcs for $196. No comments or purchases so either a renamed(reopened) store or new. You can watch to see if comments over time. A big expense to take a chance, you can check other products in store for reputation.
Btw I have been purchasing odd ball things for last 5 years and if it is not up to what is advertised you can dispute and get a refund. But you have to read description info and I screen print it at time of purchase
