  • Why did Steph Curry suddenly have a bad scoring game? What did Boston do differently in Game 5? This film room study details Coach Ime Udoka's adjustments to Steph Curry, what that meant for the Warriors offense, along with the defensive performances of Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson that helped Golden State slow down Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to take a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals.

    Friendly reminder, Steph had a college game where he scored zero points because he got double teamed full court the entire game. The man was willing to let his teammates take advantage of it and they end up winning the game because of it. His unselfishness hasn't changed all these years. The team winning has always been his priority, not his ego. It's so rare to see that for someone that had his level of success and it just really makes him different.

    Exactly. Celtics chose a bad night to change their coverage. After being so hot the last few nights he was way overdue for a cold streak.
    Curry's a pro and was still effective despite missing every three and an abysmal 31% FG but I can't help thinking they'd have won this game and Curry scoring 25ish if they stuck to the gameplan and didn't overcommit to the chefs enormous gravity.
    They did a fantastic job early in this series not over committing. Which essentially forces Curry to score 30+ to have a shot at winning the game. Instead they focused on Curry who was gonna have a cold shooting night anyway which gave the secondary stars extra room to work and they stepped up big time to support their leader.
    Curry is a monster who can blast off for 35-40+ a night easy, maybe even 2 or 3 but four would be a big ask and Celtics blew.their chance at being one game away.
    No matter what though I'm loving this Finals and am just so stoked I'm alive to see the greatness and all the context.
    I called warriors in 6 at the start but I'm hoping I'm wrong and probably am. I'd love a game 7 of these two teams going at it.

    • @panner11
      @panner11 2 года назад

      Where is the evidence that he would've had a cold night anyways? Isn't it a more reasonable explanation that the face guarding offball and trapping got him out of rhythm early in the game and he never got it back. In the end, 104 points by the warriors is acceptable for Boston. Boston just choked with all the turnovers and unproductive offense. The defensive coverage was better than last game, the adjustments were good, it's just that the warriors are very versatile and were able to adapt.

    • @josephmatthews7698
      @josephmatthews7698 2 года назад

      @@panner11 well - when I finish my multiverse portal gun we can check and make sure but until then the evidence is essentially Curry and every shooter ever has hot and cold nights and 31% FG and 0 from 3 is EXCEPTIONALLY cold.
      All credit to the Celtics defense for like 80% of his shots but there were several wide open opportunities Curry could have taken advantage of to get into Rhythm and he just flat out missed them.
      The defense definitely played a part in his abysmal shooting night and they took what would have been a mediocre or bad shooting night from curry and turned into (by Curry's shooting standards) one of his worst nights in years.
      I say that because the Celtics non-Curry-centric defense scheme they've been running with has worked pretty well and this new defense clearly flopped badly.
      As the title says "pick your poison" Steph or everyone else. I'd pick everyone else every single time and force Steph to have an extraordinary night 4 times while targeting the heck out of him to win because jump shooters can and do run into cold streaks.
      You're free to disagree but the first four games have shown it to work pretty okayish while game 5 proved the alternative was a bad idea (probably.)

      I feel very similarly, this stuff is great!
      I have been waiting for someone to articulate the change in coverage on Steph, because I thought I was noticing some traps and super high drop coverage in Game 5... but I'm not an expert so I wasn't sure.
      This all makes so much sense now, because now as expected, in Game 5 the paint and drive game for the Warriors opened up big time... precisely what Boston initially tried to avoid earlier in the series.
      I feel though that Boston should've STARTED with this strategy, and maybe moved away to their earlier series strategy later in the series.
      Since now, after a slow start for most of the role players and Klay... the supporting cast feels more ready to take advantage of their increased opportunities, now that they have shifted their focus to stopping Steph more strongly.

      Its more like a consequence of when you get the Celtics at high turnovers and not having the offensive output to match when the Warriors are simply balling out. Its been the Celtics weakness in the playoffs where Smart is main culprit but more so in the Finals, the Jays have the real offenders. Brown's 5 chokes in the last game is egregious considering how shaky his handles are. Tatum has 95 turnovers so far in the postseason but his offensive output outside of the EC series have been absolutely slowed down. He's settling and when scorers like him do that, you know he's not going to kill you down the stretch. The Celtics tried to bend the Warriors on defense but never really broke them. Steph broke the Celtics defense in game 4 and they never recovered after that. The Celtics have had two bad 4th quarters in the last two games and I think that is how it ends.

You risk curry going nuclear. Spend extra resources to take curry out of the play entirely, you then have to contend with the spacing between Wiggs, Pool and Klay. This is what makes the Warriors offence SO hard to guard. So many weapons combined with high IQ, selfless players who move the ball around. while I GENERALLY agree with you guys and I think Ben would too (they didnt make him 0-9- and he played somewhere between pretty well and very well outside of that), they DID change up the D and it DID make him think about his selection a bit imo.... he had those couple extra extra deep 2016 regular season type early shot clock launches against what could be called "the raised drop" and that was a consequence of of course A- him taking a shot at creating momentum like he does but B- him recognizing they were giving him a thirty footer but might faceguard and double beyond that... whereas before he basically could get a deep stepback off ANY P&R any time in the shot clock... so they DID affect him at least some (he COULD have made those but it was a bit of a new selection process).
      The great thing is we won! So we both have the advantage of being able to make adjustment (that they cant fully prepare for) AND B- guys got going and we got one more win.

      Point being, thats exactly what the Celtics wanted to happen. To not just keep Curry from scoring but to tire him out as well. It's not a coincidence that he finished about all his layups and midrange shots, but missed his 3's.

      That's an analysis based on stats. Steph's impact on the game often doesn't show up in the statistics. He changed this from 5 on 5 to 4 on 4, which is a huge difference, especially when you have a team that cuts and passes as well as the Warriors. Wiggs was great, but having so much floor to work with really opened things up for him. And that was thanks to Steph taking a Celtic with him to the nether regions of the court.

But the attention he attracts on defense and how they have to guard him on principle always up the playbook for his teammates to step up. The worst part is even if the Celtics do try focus their efforts on him, if he breaks through in a quarter and still gets 30+ points they are screwed. Meanwhile the Celtics are choking the ball up 15+ times and can't score enough to chase the Warriors in the 4th quarter who have been the better team in both games.

    Golden State's role players really stepped up without Curry being on fire. What killed the Celtics in my view was Tatum and Brown forcing some well contested shots in the fourth and for some reason Udoka decided that they should play the entire game when they were clearly tired; the play that highlights it is when Horford rushes up the court with the ball and tries to do a pick and roll hand off to Brown when he clearly wasn't ready for it.
    Kerr out-couched Udoka and utilized minutes to their bench to give the starters the rest they needed to finish off the Celtics. It was clear that Golden State was going to win it in the fourth with 5 minutes to go when Golden State started to knock down unguarded shots because Tatum and Brown were dead to try and defend. It seemed that the Celtic's bench was ice cold even though they caught up in the third with their starters. So much energy was used just to do that which resulted in them being tired.
    The Celtics need to understand that it takes a team to win it and they all need to be on the same page. They all looked dead and disorganized when Golden State was breaking away. There might have been legit missed calls from the refs but having no urgency just cemented their loss to Golden State. Pool got into Smart's head a bit and it almost ended up being with him being kicked off...

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 года назад

      It is the limitations of the Celtics playmaking and scoring on their end. It starts with Tatum and he's just not a threat down the stretch to take over the game with his scoring. Especially with how the Warriors are absolutely handling him. Jaylen Brown can't get his spots, can't finish at the rim and worse he's turning over the ball as much as Tatum and providing even less of an ability to take over. The rest of the team can only do so much with their jumpers and shot creation that the Warriors will settle with them trying to put up buckets to try kill them. I've wrote it before but the Celtics at best took the Warriors defense to their limits but never broke them. Steph broke down the Celtics defense in game 4 and they have since never recovered. The Celtics have been worse in 4th quarters the past two games and they cannot close out turning over the ball so much vs a Warriors teams who gets buckets easily from transition.

      When both defenses are playing tight, it then becomes a game of buckets. Guess which team had players making more buckets.

    Curry’s Gravity is no joke. Had 0-9 night but still get double team.

    This is why I am so confused with all the pre-finals prediction that Boston will win cause no matter how good they are in defense, their offense is up and down. Warriors are not scubs at all in defense with adaptable offense so Boston being heavy favorites where confusing. GSW now showing their adaptability

    The new term in basketball “gravity” was made for Stephen Curry. Nobody has the gravity on the court that he does. He has to be accounted for as soon as he crosses half court. Gives everyone a little more space. This “Wiggins is the Finals MVP” is ridiculous.

    They were able to contain Curry but they have to lose energy and space to allow his teammates to help him win the game and maybe again in the fourth quarter of the 6th game.

    That why they won in 2017 and 2018 bc if they choose Curry then his impact like King on the court even if he not score much u still pressure him and he gonna pass up to one of the best 1v1 player KD and he gonna make u pay

    This shouldn’t demoralize Boston, Odoka should probably plan his defense the same way, the warriors role players won’t play the same way, if you’re losing to the warriors then make the rest of them beat you

    Warriors must be ready prepared because Boston is going to be aggressive attacking in the next game but the warriors must be wise smart sharp hungry attacking aggressive discipline focused discipline Excuting together on offense and defense 🤔

    if golden state never played boston, the resurgence pf klay’s defense would have taken longer. one of the many reasons why i prayed religiously for this match-up lol
