    The instock argument is a pretty valid one. Thinking of putting something together myself and struggling heavily with the availability. I mean... if you already have something with which you're really happy, going into a 1 year long group buy may seem okay... but if you want to get started ... that's just a dealbreaker. Thanks for the in depth context, really helped me

    what is drop doing

  • @Djjolly037
    @Djjolly037 3 года назад +22

    I can see what drop is doing here, mainly just trying to fill a gap left by out of stock boards like the NK65 which is pretty much better than this board in every single way for a much cheaper price but like I said, out of stock. I feel like drop got a bit lazy here.

    • @Triannosaurus
      @Triannosaurus 3 года назад

      Yes and now to mention all the other beginner build boards that are even better than the nk65, like the kbd 67 lite or the portico. Drop is pretty infamous for having over priced items tho so nothing new.

    • @mkdylt6813
      @mkdylt6813 3 года назад

      Definitely not up to par to the NK65 in terms of sound and design, but i feel like execution is better (save for north facing switches). For example, tonnes of issues with cracking on the NK65 corners, screw holes (probably because they didnt install brass inserts so it screws directly into plastic) and mounting posts. The issue is so bad that people automatically get $10 discounts to bring the price of their new board to the price of b-stock boards. To me the NK65 is the enthusiast choice but clearly worse build quality and quality control. Think of it like a hot hatch i guess - basic car with a performance engine.

    You can also program qmk to do tap arrows like on the anne pro 2 just use these code:
    UP = MT(MOD_RSFT, KC_UP)
    DOWN = LT(2, KC_DOWN)
    LEFT = LT(1, KC_LEFT)
    Right= MT(MOD_RCTL, KC_RGHT)
    and if holding the left and down it functions as layer 1 or layer 2.

  • @ScottTuscher

    Your cinematic photography continues to impress me sir. And I agree about the "in-stock value" - I love my drop alt boards (I have way too many lol) and I love that I can get a beautiful board in a pretty quick timeframe. Plus the hotswap value of being able to test any new switch I buy in an instant is so much fun. But I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on this Carina, and I'm glad you made this video to confirm my doubts. It's pretty, for sure, but that price and the competitive market are real. My next boards I'm excited to get and play with are the IDOBAO ID80 and the GMMK Pro. Look forward to your reviews on those as well. OH and the plate mount stab market is scarce but you can buy these EVERGLIDE PANDA GOLD-PLATE MOUNTED STABILIZER SET on Drop (I have one set right now) and lubed they are loads better than the stock drop stabs.

  • @mikeybroe1
    @mikeybroe1 3 года назад +1

    Hey Brian, i think (possibly) a reason for them not including a softer plate material option such as fr4 is because softer plates increase the so called uneven feel of a tray mount board. It is not as noticeable with stiffer plates, which is why if you look at kbd fans boards most people are pairing them with alu and brass

  • @Sylvrfonic
    @Sylvrfonic 3 года назад

    I just built this kit as my first. I have to say , not knowing that it's crazy expensing for an entry level kit, I feel like I got my monies worth. The case feels high quality, the bronze plate is just perfect. The added convenience of getting (almost) everything at the same shop was great.
    But, those included stabs. Imagine lubing and filming every switch, each one sounds and feels exactly how you wanted it and then you touch the space bar and it sounds like the Tin Man throwing up marbles.
    I replaced them with some Durock stabilizers. I can't really understand why the difference is so dramatic. But, it is. I think, as a first time builder, I would have been better off if the stock stabs were not included. I would have been spared the initial disappoint of putting in all that work only to be let down by the stabilizers. At least the were easy to remove.
    I'm happy with the keyboard. My overall experience is very positive.

    There's also Gateron stabs you can get that are plate mount. It's real sad seeing that a lot of entry tier hotswap boards are plate mount stabs.
    Boards a real tough sell over NK65, Portico and I think there's a few more coming in terms of 60-65% hotswap boards.

    I got the Carina in one of the original early drops, I think for $100 or $120. I've had a good number of Drop boards...HP Laser Alt, another Alt converted to HP, LP Ctrl, and the Carina. My overall take on the Carina is the same, its not a bad board but this will be my last Drop board until they work out the stabilizer issue. I'm tired of trying to make janky, objectively inferior plate mount stabs work well. Even genuine Cherry plate mount stabs aren't great, you can pick up a number of PCB-mount stabs for ~$10 that are better in every single way. Why do they do this to us? It'd be one thing if they offered a stab upgrade path on their own site that would fix this for us, but not only is that not happening, there truly aren't any good plate mount stabs in the entire market if your reference point are decent to high quality PCB stabs like c3 or Zeals.
    We'll just have to take the 5 hole as the small win with the Carina, but Drop has work to do to keep up with the market. Many of us started with Drop boards but quickly grew out of them because they have the glaring weaknesses pointed out in this review. Many of us back then didn't know that plate mount stabs suck, or that we'd be cutting our 5 pin switches, etc. We've grown but Drop is still offering what is basically the same product as then and for that reason, until they completely overhaul their product offering, I'm out.

    I was originally on the preorder for this board, but I backed out because I had way too many tray mount 60% boards already. One note about stabs, you should look into balancing the wires, :3ildcat has some good tutorials buried in some of his videos. If you don't balance the wires, they will rattle after a while even with heavy lube.

    Still having plate mount stabs? What a bummer lol... I own the Drop CTRL HP and the plate mount stabs are just bad, even genuine cherry or durock ones. No matter how good they are and how even the wire is, they somehow always end up being inconsistent despite a ton of mods. I can't wait for my Saka 68 and Rama Kara, though the CTRL is and will be special to me because it's the first board that I have customized :)
    But Drop really needs to step up their game..

    Does anyone know if you’d be able to fit something like an HS60 or DZ60 in the carina case?
