I have a house that from 1948 to 2012 had a section of copper pipe used for natural gas. I did not know until I helped my plumber repipe my gas line under my house. We sized the correct black pipe for the number of gas appliances. Thank you again for your interesting videos..
Check out the tagged furnace options! If you doing a DIY furnace install I would highly recommend purchasing a furnace from Mr Cool. They offer a full warranty even for DIYers. I linked to all of the common furnace sizes as well as the LP conversion kit that you'll be needing. For other tools & supplies I recommend you can check out my Amazon page here: www.amazon.com/shop/benjaminsahlstrom Good luck on your installation!!!
Bro thank you. I was doing resi work from 2018-2019 then went into commercial being a tinknocker so it’s been a while since I’ve done a resi install. I have to go back to resi for a bit waiting on a big commercial job in spring and needed to refresh myself on the process and this is a great video. Lmao on the old return cutout that’s hilarious, and I always love seeing old school dangerous electrical work. Old school stuff is so cool.
Been in the hvac biz. for 24 years. I like the furnace base your brother fabricated. need to patent that and sell to hvac supply houses. Seen someone make a Ton of Money by coming up with the clear P trap.
First class video. Very thorough and easy to understand! You allowed me to install a high efficiency furnace in my garage. Now I will be able to work out there and not freeze my but off!
Hey Ben, so I'm a relatively new subscriber. I've been watching your older videos, and came to your most recent video to post a comment requesting that you move your added text from the bottom of the screen where it interferes with both closed captions and also RUclips play controls (timeline, play, pause, etc). But after watching this video, I noticed that you've already done exactly that. Thank you so much! It's aggravating to have to stop, turn off the captions, back up the video, and then hit play (and wait for the controls to disappear) in order to read any text you've added to the video. Love your channel... I've learned so much!
I'mma come back to class tomorrow because this is a lot to take in. I'm going to have to rewind and start from the beginning as well because I need to know everything and I need to know that I'm doing it correctly. Thank you guys for the informed video I'm learning a lot and I'm just going to have to watch this second time maybe even the third and fourth time!
One thing you didn't talk about is setting the cooling blower speed properly for the size of a/c installed. Most of these furnaces ship with it set to high, for a 2.5 to 3 ton. But in a northern climate a 60000 btu may be matched with a 1.5 or 2 ton, necessitating cutting the speed down to get proper dehumidification.
Yes...usually the blower is set for low on heating....heat goes to cold thus it moves easier than cold air. A/C would use medium or high depending on the delta T
@@Garth2011 With today's furnaces, a/c can need less airflow than heat. On a 3 ton drive furnace and a 1.5 ton a/c, the minimum speed should be used. a modern 60 000 btu high efficiency furnace needs as much airflow as a 2.5 ton a/c, about 1000 cfm. Set heating blower speeds for a delta-t in the middle to lower end of the rise range and a/c 350 to 450 cfm per ton depending on ductwork and climate with static pressure test, using the manufacturer's blower performance chart. or for constant airflow type ecm, airflow cfm is directly set.
This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
I have a new furnace when I bought my house 🏠 they never hook up the cold air return I did not know and ran it ll winter hope it did not reck my unit I filled up 4 times OMG I am fixing that problem thanks to you when I saw your video I was so happy finally I had some one who can give me the answer I needed I am a mother of 3 thank you God for this video
Should be trapping that drain for the ac. You are refrigerating the drain plus sometimes you can run into draining the condensate issues. Also I installed a pvc tee with a tap to install a drain (trapped as well) to take away any condensation draining back on your exhaust pipe before it gets into your furnace. This eliminates replacing your air switch every few years from moisture build up.
35:28 so you have to worry about “acidic condensate” from the water being dispose from this unit? Do you recommend adding a “Condensate Neutralizer Kit” to a high efficient natural gas furnace?
As a long time viewer, and now proud owner of a dual fuel generator. I do most everything else myself. I opted to have my furnace installed professionally. Do you have an opinion on the cold air intake being in the basement and not vented outside? (Mine is just stubbed in the basement)
Good one , as usual ( man you cover a lot of ground!) Curious about whats going to happen with the oil tank. We're in NYC and thinking of converting to natural gas, but heard its an EPA nightmare. Also heard similar about the oil burner...
Question? I'm wanting to install a gas furnace in my home. It's a very small home and it doesn't have a basement. I'm familiar with the old gas furnaces that use to be in mobile homes. The best that I can remember is that the duct work came from the side or bottom of the furnace and not from the top. With the duct work going under the furnace and floor to the vents.... Can I purchase one of the furnaces as shown in the video and place it in a desired spot in my home and then run the duct work out the top and then downward under the floor to connect to the duct work? Or would I have to buy a downflow furnace? Thanks.
I just helped a friend convert a new furnace to propane. The kit did not come with a low pressure switch and the manual did not mention it. I am curious if some gas switches don't require one. And our furnace had to start 6 times since I forgot to bleed the gas line.
I do not see any of the canvas strips used as vibration dampers between the near furnace ducting and the remainder of the run. Did I miss them or do the newer furnaces just have low enough vibration levels that you do not need them?
Oil these days is not what it was. The DOE is forcing suppliers to sell BIO DIESEL which has contaminents in it and will gel up oil filters and nozzles. More EPA Government save the planet ideas while damaging equipment and making the cost very high in maintenance. Seriously, we have 5th grade people making these mandates.
Awesome video! Respect! Question: I know it's different in every town but aren't there inspections required once completed (at least for the electric and natural gas)?
Re. Removal of oil fired furnace and replacement w gas unit hi eff. I will just keep my oil furnace, thanks. Old farmhouse here in nw Illinois. Many neighbors have converted to gas and now complain about house being cold as soon as furnace stops. I believe issue centers around fact that modern furnace operates by timer circuits rather than actual temperature to control blower function. Granted u can adjust the timers w jumpers or dip switches but fact is it is not reading actual temps, and a human being feels temps only. Thus in a old drafty house, best to have temp control. My current furnace is a Milwaukee Thermoflo, vintage 1957. Updated w a high speed Wayne MSR burner, and Magic Heat unit in the stack. Use only straight #2 fuel oil (no biodiesel allowed.) Also use a Bock oil fired hot water heater. These burners are tuned annually and combustion set w smoke tester and combustion analyzer.
most furnaces are oversized so the cycles are short and it feels cool after t-stat satisfies - supply air is cooler to begin in. size it right, go 2-stage controlled by a 2-stage t-stat and won't have this problem. oil is expensive, dirty, high-maintenance.
@@Garth2011 2-stage is for comfort, not saving fuel! The extra cost of a 2-stage constant torque over a single stage constant torque is low, for contractors can easily be under $300. the afue percent doesn't matter much provided it is above 90%.
@@BenjaminSahlstrom they're going to pull that same crap in quebec, canada soon. don't get me wrong - heatpumps are great, but its not smart to mandate all electric due to stressing the grid in extremes. they should be promoting dual fuel and get the best of both.
Ignition won't work properly without ground wire. You can easily get to situation where gas is coming, but the flame is missing. In Europe all gas pipes should have yellow color (yellow paint or yellow film) and room with gas appliance should be equipped with carbon monoxide detector (minimal sound level 90 dB).
We're not allowed to use gas equipment anymore, we're stuck living in California. They say we have to save the planet, you see. So instead, we must use electric everything that comes from gas power plants. This makes sense to them.
How about quit moving out of Californian into all the other states and screwing our states up too. Instead, stay in California and quit voting those a_holes in. I know your answer is; “it’s not me voting them in, it’s all the other progressives” but what you fail to realize is that anytime you make an exception and vote for one little seemingly insignificant issue because it slightly favors you, other people are doing that same thing with other issues that favor them. That’s what leads to screwing a whole state up, because everyone does it according to their own interests. Quit thinking in terms of what favors me or us, and instead, think and vote in terms of is this issue constitutional and what does it do to individual freedoms as a whole. is that a bed frame?
I use an outdoor boiler to heat both my house and my shop. We have radiant floor heating in our house and I wouldn’t heat with anything else.
I would have checked all of the gas line fittings for leaks before firing the furnace... just my opinion.
they did
If it was a big enough leak where it would be a concern, you would have a strong odor, and at that point you wouldn't advance until fixing it.
