You're the third video I watch about how to play this game, and you're by far the most clear. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help!
Your explanation was so much easier to follow than the instructions that came with the game--thank you!
Wow haven’t played this in 20+ years. Thanks for the memory/reminder of how to play.... we will define toy be playing on party night.
I'm not sure how I stumbled across you, but I'm glad I did! I've already watched a couple of your tutorials, and they're wonderful. The world needs more face-to-face game play. I can't wait to learn some new ones here!
Didn't feel like reading the instructions. Great explanation, time to play some Mexican trains with the kids now!
None of the instructions I've seen so far have been very clear
Mine even contradict themselves at key moments.
@@kcchoi5493 Yeah, that's a big problem with most games. The rules are poorly written, don't handle irregularities, etc. Even my Hoyle book sometimes misses the mark.
The directions in our made in China Dominoes were not even close to explaining Mexican Train.
@@kcchoi5493 I agree - we started to read instructions (first time playing) and it was like reading a foreign language. We got somebody in to sit with us who knew the game.
We've been playing this game so wrong. Thanks for the clear instructions
Thank you for this video! It was very helpful in learning how to play the game. There are two scenarios that we have come across, where we can't find clear directions. One is when someone, on the first round, leaves an open double, but there are still others that need to take their first turn. What we have decided, for now, is that everyone gets to take their first turn before we worry about doubles that were left open on the first round. If multiple doubles were played on the first round, we take care of closing them out according to the order they were played. I suppose another option would be that the double gets taken care of before any other plays are made, but when it gets back around to the players who have not yet taken their first turn, they could then play as many dominoes as possible.
The second scenario is when someone, on the first round, does not have a matching Domino for the train, but when they draw a domino, they get a matching Domino for the train. Do they only get to lay that one down? Or do they get to put as many down as possible? For now, what we have decided to do, is to let them play as many as they can.
I've only played two times since watching your video. I watched 4, and each one was slightly different from the others. I'm open to hearing ways that others handle these situations. :)
Thanks! The instructions didn't make the "Doubles Rule" clear... I had to watch you're video where you explained and expanded on it perfectly!
What happens if on the first round, a player ends with a double on his train, but the next player cannot playoff it??? Do all players get to start their first train round before having to play the double?
@@jlowe44 Yes, we make someone play on the double before continuing at our house in that case.
Best Mexican train tutorial out there! Thanks!
Great vid. I really like this version for how everyone build as long of a train that they can on the first move. I haven’t seen that before.
Great tutorial! My kids and I watched all together so we would understand how to play (the directions that came with our set are not very user friendly). Thanks for doing this
Thanks, you saved our Christmas with this explanation!
Zachary Kachaylo lol
This was the video I was looking for, simple and direct explanation
Chicken Feet: A cool variant is to allow three tiles to play on any one double. Doing so, creates the shape of a chicken foot where the back of the K- is the double. As in the normal game, only the first "toe" of the chicken foot needs to be covered before normal playing continues. The other two "toes" can be added anytime. This speeds up the game and takes more skill (you need to keep track of every doubled played).
Wow.....This makes way more sense than the written instructions. Good Vid. Thanks!
You really put a lot of thought into this.
It probably took you hours to make a 7 minute video.
Thanks.
THANK YOU! My son is newly obsessed with dominos and this was helpful
Thank you - great tutorial. My mom and I had a great time playing this.
Great tutorial. This is the game of choice for both my family and my in-laws. We differently in 3 ways:
1. The first double played in The center is the highest double in anyone’s hand. If no one has the double 12 then we go down in order, e.g. double 11, 10,etc. When scoring, we mark that number off and go back to the skipped number(s) for subsequent rounds.
2. We allow opening a Mexican train on a player’s first move.
3. Players can only play one domino in the first round. The exception, as stated above, is that the player with The highest double lays that down plus their one tile. So they get a slight advantage.
I was looking for a train in mexico but i remember i used to play this game and it was so fun
Wow, great tutorial…Bought a double 15 domino set and wondered why there were trains in it!
So fun! Me and my brother played this for the first time and we had fun, even though we only played a first round.
Forgot how to play and trying to teach my boyfriend!! Thx so much
Perfectly explained, thank You.
Best explaination of this game I found. Good job!
Best tutorial yet. Thanks so much!!!
Wow! What a fun game! Thank you for your very clear and concise explanation of the rules and how this game is played. Have a blessed week!
Thank you. It had been so long since I had played, I couldn't remember what the marker was used for.
This is the best tutorial of all the ones I have seen. Thank you!
Best explanation on RUclips that I’ve seen so far
Easy to follow tutorial thank you
Nicely done! Looking forward to some Thanksgiving dominoes.
Best explanation yet🙌🏼
Many people have asked that if a person does not have a tile to match the opening tile what to do. But my question is - even if the player marks their train as “open” how does it start? Does another player have to place an opening tile for them? If so, do they still get the chance to put down as many dominoes as they can? Or do they just have to play one tile at a time in whatever open train there is?
Thank you for this video! It really helped.
If someone plays a double on their personal train and cannot answer it after drawing from the boneyard, I've read that they may play on another open train before passing play to next player. This doesn't make sense to me as other players cannot play at all until the double is answered (as I understand it). Does anyone have a thought?
Very clear and helpful. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for this video! It was very helpful :)
Must the domino laid down (by the same player) after a double, allways match that double?
Very clear instructions.
Finally it all makes sense to me. Another great game tutorial by GatherTogetherGames.
Hapusdomini , ..
Very helpful. There are variations i.e. more plays off a double. But this is an excellent video for starters. Thanks!
You're probably thinking of Chicken Foot which is another game, but some so use that variation in this one
Great tutorial thank you! If a player can’t play on their first round what should they do? Do you draw until you can start, do you just draw one? If you draw and you get one you can play do you continue the first round like everyone by going through all the ones you can play or do you just pass?
If you cannot play on your first turn, draw one domino from the boneyard. If you still cannot play, open your train. If you can play, play all the dominoes you can.
Great explanation! But 2 questions..
If a player plays a double in the first turn, are the other players blocked from starting their first turn until someone can close the double?
And if you can't match the motor can you play on an other open train even if you haven't started your own?
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks. Very helpful.
This helped us a ton! I so have a question, hopefully someone finds this to answer it lol
If someone can't satisfy a double, they open their train. The next person has an open train but CAN satisfy the double. Do they then close their train? Or it ONLY closes when they play on their own train, regardless of how it was opened?
The train only closes when they play on their own train.
very helpful - thanks
and if a double is played in the first round by the player 1 or any other player, should it be satisfied?
if yes, suppose players 1, plays 4 dominoes so the next player can play up to 4 dominoes but either right on the fourth one or before that, a double is played, should this double be satisfied? (player 2 plays 4 domineos and the 4th one is a double if he/she ought to play the next one is the 5th move, which is more than the moves of the player 1 which was 4)
+Arman Kamalzadeh A double does not need to be satisfied on the first turn of any player. The first player with a second turn needs to satisfy any open doubles left from the first turns. The normal double rules apply if the player cannot satisfy the open double.
I had the same question. Thanks for clearing that up.
derkgts10 we let them draw 1 each turn until they have a domino that they can start a train with. Is this correct?
Thank you for the tutorial but I have more questions:
1) Do you have to satisfy the double on the first turn when you are placing as many as possible? What if you can't?
2) Do you have to satisfy the double for the public "Mexican" train?
3) What if you can't match the "Engine" on the first turn? Do you get a marker and not go?
1) Yes. If you can't satisfy the double, add a marker to open it.. your turn ends
2) Yes
3) You draw from the bone yard, if it doesn’t match, your play is skipped, then add a marker to open it up. You can play on other open trains.
Thank you great explanation 👍
Thank you! Best explanation of this game I've seen.
Love this game!
Question... on your first turn when you can play as many dominoes as possible... if you end with a double, what happens to the person who plays next? Do they have to close it? If they do have to close it, do they still get their first turn (and get to play as many dominoes as possible)?
I am here for the same question...we allow it just fyi.
@@GetFitReedman Yes, everyone puts down all they can, and then whoever goes "first" has to break it. No expert, but that's how we played it.
Actual rules? You can place but then add a marker. Your turn has ended. You can add to other trians if they are opened.
Very clear compared to other videos. Just need to get a train hub or station block :)
Great tutorial!!!
Great tutorial. :)
Very well done tutorial
Great video
Thank you Gtg for this amazing video, now I know how to play so very cool
Thank you!
I understand the double must be satisfied before play goes on. But the tutorial only showed the example of double on the Mexican train. Does the rule of being satisfied also apply when a player gets a double on their own train?? In other words does play stop and the double has to be satisfied by anyone just like the example on the video with the double on the mexican train?
Yes, the rule is the same for a double on a player’s train.
what if the last domino of a player is a double? after playing it, is the round finished or since a double is played the player should draw from the bone yard to satisfy the double?
If a double is your last domino then the game ends normally.
Please help settle disagreement I have with friends. At your turn, Do you have to play on your train if you can OR can you play on any open train? I’ve had some say you absolutely HAVE to play on your own train if you can before playing anywhere else.
You can play on any open train 🚂
if someone doesn't have a starting piece, can they play on other trains until they find one? Or do they have to keep pulling from the boneyard each round until he finds a starting piece?
Great breakdown- thanks!
Question: when are tiles played placed on a diagonal, perpendicular or ( seems never) straight? In regular Dominoes they are generally played straight.
I have a question!
If you draw a double from the boneyard and you can place it on a open train. Do you pick another domino from the boneyard to try satisfy your double or your turn is over after placing that double?
You only draw once. The responsibility to satisfy the double moves to the next player.
One more question!
If you have to pick up a tile in your first round you are allowed to put it down if you can start your train. So i can still lay as many tiles following that tile because it’s still my first turn right? Or do you only put that one single tile and then you have to continue one by one on your second round?
A tile is not drawn on a player's first turn. If a player cannot play on his/her first turn, the train is marked open, and play moves to the next player.
@@GatherTogetherGames Really? Oh boy, we are not playing right. Do you pick a tile and try and get the opening tile?
How does a double work on the first round? Seems like the 1st player could lay down a lot of dominoes, end with a double that no-one else can satisfy. This would give the 1st player a big advantage.
A double laid in the first round doesn’t need to be satisfied in the first round, but the first player to play in the second round must satisfy any open doubles or draw.
@@GatherTogetherGames so when we playa our clubhouse, in the first round player one puts down their train and it ends in a double. so then player two has to satisfy it and can't put down their train? and if they can't satisfy it then player 3 has to? We also pick a tile to try and satisfy the double and we continue to play this way picking a tile until someone can satisfy the double. Is this correct?
questions:
do you HAVE TO play a domino if you can?
can you save playable dominoes on the 1st round?
can you choose to draw even if you have a play you can make?
if you draw, and can play the domino draw, can you save it and just leave your train open?
You HAVE to play it if you have it, whether from your own pile or the bone yard...
Have fun!!
If there is a double and you can satisfy that double, are you allowed to strategically with hold satisfying the double and pick up a tile as if you don't have it? Technically, no one knows what tiles you have...
No i don't think so
What determines who the first player is if you set aside the double?
Everyone draws a bone, the highest numbers go first. Going counter clockwise. After that, the winners of the last round goes first.
If you are unable to draw the engine domino to start your first train, are you still able to place dominoes on other players' public trains or the Mexican train?
If the first player has a double, but do not have a match.
Does mean the rest players lose their turn to put as many as they could on the first round? And they have to put the match and can only put one from then?
What determines who player 1 is?
+Ace Nine Before beginning a game, have each player draw 1 domino. The player with the lowest valued domino goes first. After the first round, the player that won the previous round starts the next round.
What happens if you play a double on the opening hand, and you are unable to follow that up? Does the normal procedure for playing doubles apply?
+Ace Nine A double can be left open on a player's first turn. The first player with a second turn needs to close any open doubles, or normal procedure for doubles apply.
What happens when you have a double on the first move?
thanks for the tutorial
Great video 👍🏼
What if your last dominoe is a double and you can play it? Must you pull from the bone yard to complete the play?
If your last domino is a double and you can play it, you win the game. Once a player has played all their dominoes, the game is over.
sooooo, one question. when, exactly do you mark a train. when you can't play or when you don't play on your Tain? (ps, love your channel!)
You mark your train when you can’t play. If you play on another train, your train doesn’t get marked.
I only have one question.. at 3:45 ,.. player 4 opened the Mexican train, then the train is marked.. with whose train do we mark the Mexican train if he already has his “rail”?
I’ve seen a variation where instead of placing the Mexican train with the rest, it’s just placed separately starting a “‘new starting piece” which is a Mexican train … only,… idk if that’s a good idea since there would be many pieces all over the table lol
Oh, and how many Mexican trains can be started?
When you get to your last Domino you have to tap or say uno if you fail to do so you have to draw two more Dominos.
we played a rule that you could wait to play your opening train by drawing 1 domino and passing on each turn until you wanted to play. Let's say you didn't have a domino with a 12 on it but you had 7 dominos connecting and on your 2nd turn you draw the 12-5 and can play 8 connecting dominoes. is this not allowed?
I play this way as well
Great post! Only one thing I did see that I question... At minute 4:50 that player #1 did draw a double to play on the Mexican Train, but did not play on his own train, so that should have opened his own train, correct?
No matter what, an uncovered double has to be covered before any other normal play can be made. You only open your train if you can't play, anywhere, even if drawing from the boneyard and you play on another train (not yours). He was able to play, so his train was still closed.
Thanks clear as mud now....:) But much better than the Chinese instructions that came with our Dominoes, you would think they do not know how to play Dominoes that they invented.........The open and closing train confusing especially when you closed then drew domino after not being able to play on double. Did not know no one can play until double is played upon. And starting with a 12 tile instead of highest double out of all the players.
You think the Chinese invented Mexican Train Dominoes?
@@jasonjoyce2177 Well information I found was that it is based off of a version of Pai Gaw so you know for a fact it is different? "Mexican Train comes from a Chinese Domino game called Pai Gaw. This game is played with 32 tiles. After rolling dice to determine who goes first, players try to beat the banker's hand using both the numeric and a symbolic value for their dominoes. "
The comment was made to reflect the bad instructions from most of the games made in China and pretty much all directions from anything made in China. But hey if it makes you feel smarter to call me out, good luck to you.
@@JDL_2020 Calling you out doesn't make me feel smarter. But, reading your comments does.
Don’t know if anyone is answering this video or not anymore. But a quick question.
If you play a double on your train, and then find you can’t play on that double, do you have to immediately “open” that train?
Yes, you would have to open your train in this case.
Hi! one question... may we can change the rules and play every round with multiples dominoes if match. that way is more quickly to finish the 12 rounds of games..
Best Tutorial online! thanks.
Gotta say the rules are quite strict, my family plays in a much more simplified way, only one tile per turn (unless it's a double), anyone can start the Mexican train at any point, playing on any open track closes the player's track if it was open, doubles can remain unsatisfied if you can place a different tile on any open track.
So what happens if on your first play you play a double and can’t be satisfied does the next player get to start their train or do they have to satisfy the double
My set's instructions states to start the round with the highest double among the players' tiles. This is kind of nice since it gets rid of high scoring tiles right off the bat. As described here, in the later rounds the lowest doubles are played and the low scoring tiles are played leaving the high ones, possibly, in your leftovers. Does this make the game more exciting, or frustrating. I don't play often enough to experiment. What says everyone.
Glenn Krzeminski during play you can often get rid of the high value tiles, they aren't necessarily "left over" for long. Also everyone is dealing with the same starting Centre tile so everyone is equally buoyed/distressed by whether it's high or low, so it doesn't really matter. Some rounds you'll be left with high scoring tiles, others low scoring. The fact that you play 13 rounds gives you ample chances to "recover" from a bad round, and gives other players ample chances to "suffer" from a bad round. It's part of the fun. This game is part strategy and part luck. Sometimes you just have bad luck and don't get the tiles you need. It's not a big deal. Enjoy the game :)
Your set's instructions are correct, you start with the highest double, working down..if you want a quicker game you start with whatever double you want, but still working your way down...always.
Have fun!!
What happens if you play a double in the FIRST round but dont have a tile to complete the double?
What happens if first players traIn has a double and no second domino.? What does player two do? How does it affect his laying down train?
If a first round, their turn ends and they do not pick up a domino from the boneyard. The double remains temporarily uncovered. Even the next player, during found 1, where everyone puts down their initial train (if they have one that starts with the center double), the prior double remains uncovered.
Then once the second round begins, all doubles must be covered.
Example 1: Player 3 laid down an uncovered double during round 1. Player 1 then needs to try to cover that double first ... and so on around the table.
Example 2: Player 2 and 3 laid down uncovered doubles during round 1. Player 1 must cover one of the two doubles or they have to draw a tile from the boneyard. If they cover one of the two doubles or don't cover any doubles after drawing from the boneyard, their turn is over (they don't attempt to cover both). Player two then has to try to cover the second uncovered double ... and so on.
I have a question we were playing and we got a twelve dbl, the first player got it but couldn’t go so he played from the boneyard and then passed because he did not have a twelve, so to the next person, but wait all twelve dominos, were in the turns 13 twelve doubles were all used, so what do we do if we have no more twelves to use. Because we had a double twelve but all of the twelves were used, so what do we do then.
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you so much for your video :)
I feel smarter because of this lmao
If you don't have a play on your 1st move, do you draw a tile to see if you can continue? If not, do you open your train on the 1st move?
That’s is correct. A player has to open his/her train on the first turn if a move cannot be made. Another player cannot play on an open train until the second turn.
@@GatherTogetherGames Can the player who doesn't have an train to start, play on another train if they can't open their own on the second round, even after picking from the bone yard?
Do you discard each double tile after starting a round with it, or is it put back into the pile after the end of that round for the next one?
+Ace Nine It is put back into the pile after the round.
