- The end is nigh for BoJack Horseman (the show), and what a wild ride it's been. From the dizzying heights of Horsin' Around to the lowest of the lows (Sarah Lynn?). But through it all, one thing has stuck by BoJack (the horse man) through thick and thin: his depression, and the various mental health issues of those around him.

Who'd have thought that "Bojack", which is primarily a comedy, would portray depression and mental illness so more realistically than "Thirteen Reasons Why", which prides itself on delving into "real teenage issues?
I would recommend Bojack to anyone suffering, regardless of age.
Thirteen Reasons Why not only limits itself through its intended audience, but sensationalises mental illness, rather than normalises it.
Bojack has done bad things and happened to be Depressed, not using it as an excuse. Hannah gets martyred because of her mental illness.

Because Thirteen reasons why is like the misinformed man (or woman) that tried to do a work about something he or she didn't know about.
To be honest with you, I don't think Thirteen Reasons was made to increase self aware, I only see a sick corporation taking serious matters and turning them into profit while misinforming people about certain subjects.
While on the other hand, the story of Bojack was so thought even on the color palette to show how things are not what they seem (for example, bright colors and animals seem to be about happiness or something like that, while in reality is such a sh!#fest. I do like to see it as how Hollywood it is on real life. I can obviously be wrong about this).

In a show packed to the brim with meaningful statements on life, mental illness, and being a good person, that simple line, delivered by essentially a background character, is the entire thesis of the show.

In BJ too, the side character Monkey said that in context of Running/Jogging to BJ.
Work definitely gets easier but there is a different line of being broken from other series called Final Space.

That first quote by Diane "flip over the nothing and underneath there's more nothing" is one of the most relatable lines in the entire show. The fear that getting help won't fix it and will just make you feel emptier is real.
but beauty of depression, if there is any, is that it's like the common cold for therapists, they deal with it so often that it's sure they will help almost any patient to eventually push through and improve their situation, at least a little, sometimes a lot. Always worth taking professional help, in all manners of life.

That and, at one point, Bojack says, "What if I sober up and find out that I'm still an awful person?" After all, as long as he's drunk or whatever, he has an excuse to be awful. But sober, he would have to face being an actual rotten person.
As "obvious" as that may seem - that is a symptom of depression. Hopelessness, cycles of "why does it even matter? Why do I care?". And even though it may seem pointless and idiotic to pursue the idea of help, I encourage everyone to try it nonetheless. You may feel like below the great emptiness you feel there is more emptiness, but I assure you that is not true. And even if it was - it is emptiness that you can fill, that you can color and decorate however you want until it is no longer even close to "empty". But you can only do that if you try. If you try to get the help you need. Living with the emptiness is not better than trying to find a new perspective - its cant be.
I wish you all the best and I hope everyone gets the help they need. Our current society sadly does not view mental illness as the plague that it is, but we're getting there slowly. Keep speaking up about it and we might just arrive at a better place soon.

@@mohsinuddin7049 the Simpsons. I think it was amazing during the 90s. I do have a soft spot for king of the hill even though it's a late 90s show and really shouldn't count. But as you saw in the video animated series were plentiful in that century and I haven't watched enough to bring a truly informed decision.

Bojack made me realize that I might I’ve been living with depression and anxiety for most of my life. The thing is when it’s been a part of you for so long you don’t even recognize your self destructing tendencies anymore because your see it as your version of normal.

Did anyone else notice when Bojack is sitting in the church, the windows are rose tinted... referring to Wanda’s previous line (a few seasons back), “it’s funny when you look at someone through rose tinted glasses all the red flags just look like flags” It’s those small details that make this show a gift to anyone who watches it

@@mkon29 it's not something that works right away or not. It's more about changing how your brain works. Being depressed all the time, frustrated, stressed, hateful, angry, it effects your mental state. For me anyway, you pretend to be happier and upbeat to slowly but gradually change how your brain is wired and how your reality is filtered so to speak. To use another analogy, your reality is reflected off of a mirror which is warped in a negative way. Your trying to slowly but steadily fix that mirror to reflect your reality in a more positive way. Hope that makes sense.

Bojack isn’t a villain nor is he a hero. He’s a man we can all connect without and that sad but also helps you realize you’re not the worse person ever and can be helped.

A cartoon about a washed up talking horse has turned out to be one of the best depictions of depression ever made.
This show was perfect from beginning to end and stands as one of, if not THE, best TV shows of this decade.
Bojack is finished, and everything is worse now.

I'm not prepared for this show to be over. I'm glad Netflix let the creator know this would be the last season so they can do what they need to do but I'm still sad about it.
They actually didn't though.
The creator only agreed to make this show with them if they would let him know in good time when they'd like it to be over. They suddenly wanted to cancel without any good reason, because they obviously don't watch the show, or else they'd understand why it would need a minimum of 2 seasons to actually wrap it up well.
The creator and everyone else working on it had to fight tooth and nail to actually be able to make this last season. They know how complex this show is, and that it needs time to end properly.
It's not going to be as good as it could be, because Netflix is greedy.
Don't forget that Netflix cancelled this show. They are the reason why it's ending prematurely.
@@Zeverinsen Maybe, but were getting a season. Most shows just straight get canceled after they do three seasons so the fact we got six is crazy. They also announced that season six would be the last season when they announced the season was even being made. Maybe it isnt ideal but we are getting a lot more than most other canceled Netflix shows.

It's amazing how out of all the topics the Bojack series tackles, depression is one of the many that it tackles the most, and to think Diane has been depressed on at least two occasions in the show and in two different seasons.
I feel like Diane's character was depressed for the whole show. Depression isn't all about the lowest lows, when your whole life has been lived in that state you learn to cope. Her addiction manifests with the cigarettes and the sabotaging her own happiness or not allowing herself and sometimes those around her to be happy. But it wasn't as overtly obvious as Bojack's expression. Once she leaves Mr. PeanutButter she starts taking notice of the things she's pushed aside that pointed to how she really felt, and then she was able to start getting better.

This is the only show that I do not skip the opening theme song or the ending theme song. Both of them are just so great.

when I first started bojack horseman I expect something like rick and morty, you know, but then.. this series really got me and it conquered my heart. It has a deep deep meaning, everyone must watch it and think deeply about everyone’s stories.. 10/10

Bojack horseman is a really accurate representation of what it feels like to be depressed and being self destructive. I have never thought a Cartoon could be this deep. Before I started watching it I thought it was just a new family guy kinda thing, but was pleasantly surprised.
The bit about Mr. peanut butter being the only face of depression that people would accept really hit home for me I'm autistic and it seems like the only way you can be disabled in abled spaces is by being a hyper positive source of inspiration porn or a owo twagic thing for people to pitty

"Bojack Horseman" is still one of the greatest shows in history that really gets into depth about the discussion of what depression really is. The writing and execution of the series is on point with the overall topic and its accuracy on how depression affects people is the best example you could ever give someone.
Bojack is one of the most interesting characters that many people can relate to , he’s always miserable and hates himself and to numb his pain he always get high and drunk he even uses horse tranquillisers to put himself to sleep he had a bad childhood and bad parents and no matter how much money he has or how famous it’s not enough.
I've seen a lot of tv shows and series, but this is by far, the best and my favorite
Netflix you gave us the depression. Bojack is only ending because you cut their contract in 2020 alongside many other shows and some movies. This show was something necessary. The reason this show is important is because shows like Family Guy and the simpsons are going to be ending in the next few years. After those shows are done Rick and Morty who the hell knows how many seasons they’ll even make before they stop. Bojack was the perfect show needed for today’s society it’s a raw show with raw emotions that still had plenty of humor even if it’s dark. Let’s not pretend all our lives are sunshine and rainbows 24/7 and in bojack that’s dominant. This is also a fantastic show for people lost or going through shit. Not to mention I’m this show you can actually see all the characters progress as more seasons are made unlike in most shows where it’s basically like it restarted just with new missions etc. I’m pissed that Netflix is ending this show because I could easily see this show going on for atleast 8 seasons with the whole crew being happy. Instead Netflix I guess has bigger plans for movies.... so great because I totally wanted more Netflix original movies over a show like Bojack. If only more people watched Bojack I wouldn’t be surprised if then Netflix allowed more seasons by extending their contract. For me that’s the most depressing part about bojack. You finally make an animated show relatable for older teens and adults... then it gets cut off by Netflix.. great.

First off.. the episode is called “nice while it lasted” they could’ve picked a variety of different titles if it was their genuine ending if that wasn’t obvious enough, but no it wouldn’t have been beating a dead horse because they wouldn’t have had to implement an ending yet nor have their characters change their speed and watch things go downhill. I feel like we all knew this ending was coming. Also Netflix said Bojack would have 6 seasons over 2 years ago (almost 3 I’m excluding 2020) I’m pretty sure the show wasn’t even close to being beaten down in season 4. The creators said they were pissed because they believed their content was a fresh air of reality mixed into a cartoon character their audience can relate too. I’m not saying this should be some 10 season show, but I 100% could see this going until 8-9 seasons naturally before coming to an end. You can tell in season 6 things were just clustered. The show seems like it was supposed to end because well.. Netflix said so and that’s part of the editors, writers, and producers job to make their last season seem natural and coherent to previous seasons. In reality though it’s clear as day they didn’t want to end it and there are MANY indications to prove and that’s another reason why Dianne left especially for the duration and story line. It was to cause more distance followed by her marriage and in the end Bojack wanting to shoot his last shot, but knows it would be beating a dead horse because it’s too late. The show is over. They didn’t even have to age Bojack as hard as they did had there been more time. Season 5-6 work together, but that’s also when Bojack was told about their contract not being renewed because there weren’t enough watchers. You can even search it the creators didn’t want to end it, but what are they going to do tell Netflix to go fuck then selves and renew their Netflix only show? It was doomed... so they reflected that on Bojack. It was pretty clear for me tbh. I understand your point, but no way did this show need an ending at season 6 just when their audience picked up... yeah perfect time to end it just as more people are recognizing the show lol no it’s Netflix being a dick cutting everyone’s contract you can check on Netflix every month and watch how many more movies and shows are getting removed. Netflix people didn’t realize is going to become the online version of Disney - Nickelodeon except obviously for teenagers and older primarily with shows and movies. With Disney they own every single show and run everything the way they want. Nickelodeon was a show that wanted all shows to be only theirs, but they’re a little more flexible with accepting show contracts. Netflix is becoming a censored platform that’s going to practically only cater towards younger teenagers as that’s the prime audience right there plus they’ll grow up watching more Netflix. They don’t care about us 18+ people anymore because we’re not generating the numbers the 13-17 year olds are not even close especially new accounts. Bojack wasn’t a show that’s going to cut it for the new generation you should talk to one of them... they’re lost as fuck and they just follow trends. Trending shows are on Netflix... thus all teenagers try and or have Netflix. No teenagers care about Bojack unless you’re depressed let’s just be realistic. Sure there are exceptions, but that’s not good enough for Netflix nor my point. If the creators of Bojack decided to be a sell out and make their show more cheesy and cater towards kids and not care so much about character growth you’d see. This show would easily be ready for a season 7+ rn. I have mad respect for the creators because this is possibly one of the only shows I’ve ever watched where the creators are ACTUALLY in control of their production. It’s never that way and unfortunately Netflix gave it a shot and it failed so they’re never going to do it again. Every attempt that fails to meet their view count and income requirement they cut the show off and make another teenager drama bs show. They’ve been doing this since 2016 if you remember Netflix used to be a badass website... now almost everything is already made by them or they have a huge stake in. This isn’t Netflix anymore this is a company trying to grab kids attention with trash shows that have amazing production because gee... netflix can only afford it lmfao so they seem better than they are and they typically throw one or two more we’ll known actors in to grab and keep a kids attention. This show has hired both psychologists and sociologists for them to help explain how to cater properly towards their audience to generate the max income possible and by Netflix running their own show every successful movie individually will bring in tens of more millions that would’ve otherwise been vastly distributed. Netflix isn’t trying to be cool by making their own shows and movies. It literally makes them a FUCK LOAD of money so no shit they’ll cut every show soon enough. Bojack just isn’t one of those shows that made a fuck load so Netflix gave the creators atleast a two year head start about the shows future. Trust me you can see from season 4 you could connect VERY well to the characters. Season 5 it was more of you watching what’s going on. Season 6 was the reaction to everything that happened prior. Don’t tell me that’s how they wanted to end it after watching this show and how much attention to detail they’ve done😂😂I would give specifics because I can, but if you get my point then there’s no point for me to type more lol peace and love☮️unfortunately the truth about Bojack was it was almost doomed from the start Netflix just gave them a chance and thankfully they didn’t atleast blow it (it just wasn’t as successful with views and I get it. Born BredBermudian that wasn’t the point of Bojack to say what it had to say. It’s to show their audience what they want to show and give them the best experience that’s relatable and real. Saying what you have to say implements an ending right after. That’s never been the flow of the show to just say what you have to say and move on. If that was the case I wouldn’t have made it passed season 1 with how shitty the show would be. They also 100% wouldn’t give a shit about character growth because why waste their time if they’re just trying to say what they have to say? You can literally see the love put into the show especially the first 4 seasons. Then you can see how dark it gets after they find out their show is over wether they like it or not on season 6 or by the second half of 2020 as that’s when new shows etc will come in. If anything they were sad they said what they had to say in the end because that’s also a lot of jobs gone right there lol. I’d be bummed af if I was 3-4 seasons into my own show then the corporation I signed with tells me long story short “your show is cut after season 6”.... how would you feel about your pride and joy being cut to someone else’s standards when both you and netflix is aware of the quality surpassing the expectation bar? Probably not too hot... that reflects on the show heavily.

Bojack is both a product of his childhood and responsible for his actions at the same time. He knows he’s the way he is because of his awful parents however he had to learn the hard way that as an adult he has to change his outcome on his own. It’s unfortunate that he had to clean up the mess his parents left him with but if he didn’t clean it up who would have. I’m glad he is putting in all the effort to make his life better so he can be a better person to himself and to others.

SEENABEAN If the network or streaming giant or whoever it is wanted to drag the show out past what the creator would have wanted, that’s one thing and I’d agree. But to cut the show short when the creator could’ve kept going and had a solid vision for their show, that’s something else altogether.

Nah not canonically. The world is a bit more surreal and has plant people but I feel like there would have been room for Easter eggs and background crossovers if they were both running, ie via newspaper headlines etc

@@radiosilence1128 yes they did. The creator confirmed it in an interview months ago. He just made a deal that if they ever cancelled it, that they let him know so that he can end it properly. He wanted the show to last at least 8 seasons. For someone calling someone else a dumbass, you seem too lazy to do a quick Google search.
This show helped me explain to my partner how my anxiety and depressive periods work in my brain, and I think it was an eye opener for both of us. I hadn't expected a ca toon about a celebrity horse to be able to put into words how you can become your own worst enemy, but here we are.

I can firmly say, Bojack definitely delivers the portrayal of mental health accurately. Probably the most relateable scene being "stupid piece of shit", since that genuinely is what is going on inside my head. I still haven't worked myself up to watch season 6 yet though. I really need to be in a better emotional state to brace myself. Still not over the Sarah Lynn shit yet.

Hadiya Irfan Sounds like something my dad is probably going through. He spent most of his teenage and young adult years breaking hearts, burning bridges and fighting with everyone. Now he’s all alone in a New York apartment, contacting me every so often to ask how I’m doing and if I can go visit him. It’s sad, but I don’t know if I want to reconcile with him anymore. I’ve grown up believing him to be a lost cause, just accepting that he’s never gonna change, and now seeing him trying to reach out is super bizarre.

This show has some seriously life changing wisdom and portrays mental illness to other people better than any show I've watched. We need more movies and shows like this and I think the entertainment industry may be getting better at it

Why do I love this so much
That show is so deep , makes me wandering about my life decisions and perceptions on life . I used to do a lot of drugs but that show showed me the cycle in drug/alcohol used.
Sometimes I feel that in adult life you always have to play let’s pretend and it sucks , always looking foreword, planing your next move . Found a hobby , connected with the present .

Some bojack video essays on this site feel kind of forced when making a point, but this one feels natural - the clips used have breathing room, and there's enough of them that it doesn't feel like the clips are shoehorned. Whoever the essayist is, props to you.

The episode “stupid piece of shit” hit me hard. I realized how much I relate to that and how self destructive it is to my health. I’m trying to do better now, but sometimes I just can’t stop myself.

In my adult life there are two shows which helpt me deal with my nihilistic world view and both would be dismissed as kid shows by someone who doesn't know better, Bojack Horseman taught me that it's okay to not feel okay once in a while and it's better to make piece with that than to fight it. The second show was an anime called Girls Last Tour, it's about two young girls at the dusk of humanity finding beauty in the little and fleeting things and about getting along with the feeling of hopelessness. It thought that life and beauty are fleeting and one would be worthless without the other, simply existence is not enough. I normally don't get emotionally because of media even the end of Bojack didn't make me cry, but the end of the manga of Girls Last Tour hit me hard, it left me hollow. not empty but utterly hollow. Last I had a bit of an anxiety attack when I thought about my past and that for the first 16 years of my life I didn't have a healthy attitude towards life as a result of being ostracized and treated often as sub-human like I wasn't a person and like I didn't matter. I was 10 years old and I wanted to kill myself, the only thing that stopped me was my best and only friend and my amazing parents. When I went to middle-school I was immediate excluded from the group because I had a severe social rift between me and the others. At the time I was both really mature and really childish, even to this day I feel a rift between me and people my age. I passively tune out certain common gestures, because my only real association with those had been corrupted and turned into something I despised, for instance for a long time when someone called my name in the streets it was to get my attention to ridicule or hurt me so even now half a decade later I subconsciously tune those out even those from friends. I was 13 when my luck finally turned around and I made friends with similar backstories, friends I still got to this day and they helped me socially develop after stagnating for years. This happened right on time, cause at the end of that school year my beloved grandpa died and I don't want to think what I would have done if I didn't have them at that time. After this I became a weird culmination of the quite kid and the smart kid. Often seen as unstable by my class mates, like I would either hurt myself or them at any point. In reality I just felt empty for years, not sad, not happy, just empty. I have since come to terms with this aspect of myself but as I said in the beginning I recently got an anxiety attack from remembering my trauma and pain. I made a dark joke, the kind of jokes I would nearly always make when I was feeling empty and that triggered it as I started contemplating my past self. I have luckily been happy for quite a while thanks to Bojack and my friends, for pushing me to move forward and then for Girls Last Tour for helping me come to terms with who I am and who I was and helping me appreciate the sheer beauty in life. I even got a compliment lately about the fact that I'm often in a good mood. My point is no matter how far you're gone or think you're gone, if you keep going forward and appreciate the beauty around you, no matter how small or fleeting, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

There are three short words that are the hardest to say, "I need help". Nine letters that can save someone from a precipice but they are the hardest to say, as to do so you must admit that you're not strong enough to get by on your own, but it is with true strength that you admit your own limits and reach out for someone, anyone that can help when you are in crisis. No matter how isolated or alone or overwhelmed you might feel, there will always be someone that can take time to show another human being compassion and understanding, someone who can help, even in some small way, you just need to have the strength to say those three simple words.

Keep re watching bojack. The show really makes me feel like in it, but it also makes me think and see things like is this how people are in Hollywood? Like how's their life ? are they actually happy ? What are they thinking bout the choice they have made?
I cried when watching this, because I questioned myself if I'm depressed. Through everything I've been through I'm still happy around everyone. Am I depressed deep down?
Seek a therapist, nobody online can accurately assess this. Not even people that understand others. This is a medical check to do (and a very serious one, functioning depression exists).

I love this show so much and it is so smartly written. The part that will always stick with me is when Cuddly Whiskers tells Diane and Bojack that you are responsible for your happiness. It's not God's, your family, or s.o. It is yours alone.
_Bojack is someone to relate to, what other character in a show can you do that to? It's hard to forgive yourself if you've done something, it's hard to escape the 50 thoughts running in your mind about how dumb you are, did anyone else see what you've just done, why didn't I do anything different. And the show showed that._
