What I love is that you point out that an inventory of sober sedans is better than flashy cars. Renting to the person who needs sensible transportation is going to be a sensible person (usually). Someone wanting the off-roader probably wants to go off-road, but may not know how to do it safely. The person wanting the sports car may not know how to handle the power. Pick the boring car because boring customers are the reliable customers.
The Theta engines in some of the Hyundais, particularly the early 2010s are potential big problems. They are a recall/extended warranty item, but you may need to check if you qualify if you are buying used. It also takes time to get the engine replaced because of the backlog.

Luckily it was covered but then less than 100,000 miles later the other transmission went and it was on my dime. List totally makes sense. But for me, I want to have nothing to do with ICE cars for the rest of my life. I have been testing the Turo waters with my 2017 Tesla MS. Very little data so far, but seems to be out about 50% of the time at $125/day. I have seen Tesla rates commonly at and above $200/day, all the way up to $800. My sense is that the novelty of being able to rent an electric car with a bit of panache will hold up until the rental car markets catch on. Best part is there is essentially no maintenance and I get to be part of the transition to low-carbon transportation. Thinking about expanding the fleet with a newish Plaid. Anyone out the with Tesla/Turo experience?

Hi Aubrey - great channel, solid content. one of the things you may not be aware of is that you can often get the clones of the 2010-2012 Ford Escape for less money. These are the Mazda Tribute and the Mercury Mariner. The same holds true for the earlier Ford Fusions were based on the Mazda 6 design and used the same engines and transmissions as the Mazda 6. The Mercury Milan is a more luxurious version of the Fusion for less money on the used market. Sometime in the future I hope to start my own Turo business and as a subscriber, I really appreciate your honesty and your content.

Thank you for your insights. I would say, at least around here, a lot of people do some shady Sonata dealing by buying wrecked ones and then fixing them up, but in reality the frame is damaged and no longer would protect someone driving it as well as a lot of parts could go bad if they were damaged. If you ever see an airbag light on or anything that might indicate a crash I would definitely stay away from those. Also I had one suggestion for the videos. If possible maybe adjust the volume up a little bit so the ad volume isn't blaring when they pop up. Thanks again for the turo suggestions. I am probably going to purchase a few cars of my own in the near future to fund the car I am really after.

The jeep wrangler is not a good rental. If the turo owner has to pay for expense out of pocket into the thousands, there is no way this vehicle should have ever been listed. Unless a person can make the repairs themselves, paying for the repairs could financially hurt a person. Do not rent any vehicle that is a financial burden. That would be like letting section 8 renters, rent a home. When section 8 renters leave or evicted, the damages are in the thousands if not tens of thousands.

    Great insights here, Aubrey. Thanks!
Have you done some thinking on the advent of hybrid and all EV vehicles and how they may change the Turo market?

Usually when you buy a car for $4k-$6k range, you’re going to be over 130k miles or under the year 2010. Turo requirements specify that you have a car that’s under 130k miles and not older than 13 years. So not sure how some of these cars would even make it in

According to the carculator, these cars make about 1/3 as much as a volvo suv or wagon of the same year and price (2010-2014, 9-12k). Do you have any volvos?

You mentioned the 2009 Ford escape. Terror requires that car is not be more than 12 years old. Are you allowed to continue using a 2009 model after it's more than 12 years old? If so does that affect the insurance coverage if something were to happen during a guest trip and the car is more than 12 years old?

I thought that Touro only allowed cars that were no older than 12 years old. If I’m right, these cars would be too old to even be on the website.

Yes, but be careful with the transmission. Fiestas have some bad transmission issues- I used to have a 14’ and it did really well
