The tree in the original lime green is honestly what caught my attention the first time I saw this set, and I love it! As always a very thorough and enjoyable review, good work.
As a graphic designer I have to disagree with the modified “palm tree” color. The color of the tree chosen by the set designer(s) helps to create a sense of depth, a color contrast across the set, and a building/landscape color contrast we might experience in the real world. When you replace the lime green with green you create a sense of sameness, in terms of color, across the set. This sameness subliminally causes our minds to view the set as more two dimensional or flat or dull. Now, this is obviously subjective. If you dig the alternative shade of green, go for it! That’s the wonderful thing about LEGO. You can modify designs to fit your aesthetic. You do you! Still, I completely understand why the designer(s) chose the colors they chose-from a graphic designer’s perspective.
The moment you removed the tree the whole build just clicked with me and the darker green leaves work much better. I'll definintely get this set. Maybe a downpipe could work in the weird gap formed by the angle.
My thought when Jang pointed it out was also to create a downpipe to cover up the colors showing through in that gap. Think I will add that when I buy and build this set later this year.
I went to the Lego store yesterday and saw it in person. The box art really doesn't do it justice in my opinion, it looks much nicer than I thought. I really like what they did with the geometry, and the skylight is a nice touch
I was also surprised how much better the city sets for 2022 look in real life at the lego store. They have very good lighting to showcase their models.
I think my favorite “Easter egg” in this set is that the Picasso painting is a direct reference to the oft-forgotten Lego Galidor line. Specifically, the Nick polybag that was a McDonald’s happy meal. That is an insanely deep cut and really shows the designers truly love the company. Love to see stuff like that.
I had no clue the lime green leaves were so polarizing. I thought it looked absolutely natural and perfect for this build. It's the green that's jarring for me. Other than that, a big fan of the color scheme in this one overall. I'm really glad to see the rotary phone and typewriter prints being reused which will put more of them into circulation and hopefully drive their BrickLink prices down just a little bit.
I have to say that I appreciate that you don't rush these out. I know you don't script these but it's clear you don't just put these out with just base impressions either. Everything feels really considered and takes in a designer perspective and a fan perspective and i really like how you do these price breakdowns.
I like the lime green colour. Other greens, such as bright green, would perhaps not have quite enough contrast in relation to the roof colour. I feel like if a more "regular" green was used for the leaves, then the roof - and ultimately other floors as well - would have to be coloured differently. Thus, with regard to the colour choices in the building, I think the designer made the right choice.
I cried a little when you started talking about price and comparing it with parisian restaurant. I was avoiding modulars for the longest time because I knew if I bought one, I would just go nuts, and this set finally put me over the edge. So naturally in preparation for it I bought the bookstore and also forked out 300 bucks for Parisian Restaurant. :X Love the bookstore and the hotel, waiting for a really nice, calm weekend to build the Parisian and see if it will top the hotel when I will actually get to see and interact with it in person. Great review as always (btw, I like the tree :P )!
The tree and the bar area is one of my favorite things on this build. It gives the outside lounge/bar area life. And i like the color of the leaves to.
I agree that the palm tree sticks out... changing the leaves makes it look better, but personally I just don't like the build so would just replace it with a better palm tree build of my own. For me too, the gallery is too small so I think i'll change that into another store... only small nit-picks really, otherwise it looks fantastic.
Changes I would do (for my own personal flavor): - Mirror the desk/dresser in the smaller room on the first floor so the balcony door can open inward and add a seat on the balcony (probably new railing too). - Remove the pot for the palm tree, make a more traditional top in darker green with more horizonal leaves and redesign the seating underneath. - Make the lower level luggage corner into a café/bar.
I really think it missed a restaurant or bar at the first floor. Maybe just a couple small tables and a small Kitchenette would make it more realistic. There’s plenty of empty space there.
I loved you taking off the tree - it helps. No more tree needed. I like the Easter egg of the Mondrian artwork as the original inspiration for the Lego colour pallet. And the cute irony that this set has gone far beyond that, not just within the gallery.
Fantastic in-depth review! I'm partial to the palm tree, I like whenever there's nature included in a building. Though I can understand the decision behind the lime green (I might have done the same myself), but I'm surprised at how much better the darker green looks! Even though this set excels on so many levels, and the angle work leaves me drooling, Downtown Diner still my fav. :)
10:37 is there a ghost that says "lime green" in the background? lol. Amazing set and amazing review Jang. Personally I am satisfied with the lime green color on the "palm" tree.
This is one of the most beautiful modulars for me, my main issue is the gap you pointed out at 17:45 . I don't mind the lime green, it combines well with the sand green of the roof, but the trunk is too gappy and does not look organic. My initial impression was that the tree was supposed to be an art installation.
what i love about this channel is not only jang and his wonderful, thorough reviews but also the community. i see a lot of people are disagreeing with jang’s opinion about the palm tree, but they’re not being rude about it they are politely disagreeing. wholesome community!
Don't have it yet but I like the look of it ... including the tree, the combination reminds me of something along the south coast of the UK (or Northern Spain - Santander - check the casino and El Sardinero) or the Mediterranean ... it is up there in great-looking sets for sure. I will reserve final judgment until after I've built it myself, but I can't wait.
I was in Havana, Cuba over 15 years ago and stayed at Hotel Ambos Munos Boutique. It's actually scary similar to this build. In the backyard the palm trees were so dried out that the leaves were more lime green than green. But I can understand why people react to the color as such. But it's realistic depending of the season, so credit to LEGO for thinking a bit wider.
The lime green "palm" tree is what drew me to this set. It says Cuba or Miami to me. I am planning on adding more of those potted palms to further bring in that flavor. The next thing that grabbed me quickly followed the sharp angle of the exterior and I said yes!. Now, I also must say that I immediately saw it and said "mirror build" with some alterations. I love the color scheme, the uniqueness of the shape. Yes, I'd love for it to be $150 or $170, but I ain't mad at em. Thank you for the in depth review, I am already getting my sand green pieces ready to fill in that gap on the corner. Also, perhaps a exterior glass elevator to fill in that open space? Great review as always sir.
I actually like the tree more with the lime color than the normal green. It is really an eye catcher and the colors pop but like that about the tree. Design wise there would probably have been a better way but I think the bright leaf color gives it a more LA like, near the beach feel.
I believe the top floor and roof colour is actually made to represent a copper exterior. I live in an older city built on the Atlantic coast in Canada, where there are many churches and government buildings that have copper roofs and cladding on them. The interesting fact about that, is that, copper exposed to salty sea air will turn a beautiful shade of “Sand Green” over time. I think that is what they were going for on the modular. It reminds me an old hotel in Miami or New Orleans.
Great review! I agree on the tree. Then again, the Modular line has never been the best for trees... Having said that - I am having a hard time with the flesh color bricks in this set after building it. It just seems off to me. Otherwise, an excellent set that I am happy to add to my Modular collection.
Regarding the back of the model - I know Jang said in the video that every modular building prior to this has had a bunch of empty space behind it, but that's never really been the case for the corner buildings. Both the Café Corner and Corner Garage had a similarly tiny square of space in the back, and the Palace Cinema, Brick Bank, and Grand Emporium (apart from a small back door) were completely closed off.
LOL the "Lime Green!" echo was hilarious. I think this set is so lovely! It's actually the set that got me to know about the modular series (I'm very new to the "adult" lego scene)
Parisian Restaurant for the win! For some reason this makes me happy:) I don't own any modulars but parting out and starting to build the Parisian Restaurant has been very fun. I'll have a couple of years to make up my mind on the Boutique Hotel, but I do think it looks good. Good to know that the light nougat bricks are less creepy when built up. Thanks for the review! "lime green" LUL I say "pink cone"
reminds me of hotels in Vegas and the west coast. The tree is actually one of my favorite touches! My house in Vegas had tons of different sized palms, and a few looked like that one.
Two thoughts: 1.) the actual printed “painting” in the art gallery seems to be a cubist rendition of the original Nick Bluetooth Happy Meal toy from Galidor 2.) every time you did the lime green (lime green) thing, the Bionicle nerd in me wanted to shiver!🤣
3:32 If you look at the poster it references a majority of old modular except for the Andy Sax poster which might hint that the next modular is a dance hall/jazz club
Funnily, I find this one particularly "french" in its architectural inspiration, compared to the more traditionnal american victorian shown in the other buildings ^^
As someone who normally is only into Star Wars and other pop culture themes from Lego, this set caught my eye in a really unexpected way. The visual appeal of the color combinations and the angle work really cement this as a sight to behold. There is a reason that this is the first modular I've purchased, and I definitely do not regret it. The set is just beautiful. I know a lot of people take issue with the palm tree, and that's understandable. Personally, I find that the lime green leaves, as well as the red pot, give a very nice contrast to the darker and more muted colors of the hotel itself. The minifigures are very good, the floors are all nicely decorated, and the homages and easter eggs to past sets in the line really help to make this celebratory 15th anniversary set something special. For me, this is MY Parisian Restaurant. This is the set that other modular buildings have to compete with to win over my heart.
Got to admit, that tree does catch your attention, the color screams at you, changing the green leaves that you did Jang, has made it matches with the exterior walls of the top floor, so less in your face impression. Otherwise, the building is quite interesting and the top floor room is way spacious, love this part of the interior! Thanks for the review, Jang!
I think all things considered, this is a welcome addition to the modular theme. Can't wait to add this to my collection! I might even buy 2 to combine them both. Great review.
What’s with the echo every time you say “lime green”? I appreciate the dedication adding it all throughout the video, but does anyone know what it’s a reference to? 😂
Great review, thnx Jang. I'm a casual afol, and only have a Lego Street Display, not city 😊 it's made up of modulars which have multi coloured and designed facades, consisting of the Detectives Office, Book Shop, Police Station and Assembly Square. I have deliberately selected these modulars which helps keep my Lego display smaller and suitable for my limited space. The multiple facades per modular makes the street look much more busy for a more restrictive Lego display like mine. The Boutique Hotel will perfectly complement my street and continue the multi facade trend, as well as be a good first corner modular for my street. I do agree with the tree though and would consider a different tree, or just moving it out of view. Take Care everyone.
The only sad thing for me about the angled designs is that I like to tile the interiors (with a few studs for minifigs) but that is very hard with angles like this. Hard to do well anyway.
The regular green matches a lot with the sand green of the building. The original bright green of the leaves offers more contrast with the building's green color. My guess is that, that's the reason they went with the odd color.
Rewatching this, I didn't catch that the removable 2×4 printed painting in El Cubo is Nick Bluetooth from Galidor. They reference that line far more than I'd ever expect.
I really like the lime, and I think the bright and regular green seem kinda bland. I like how the lime sticks out and makes the whole build seem more “tropical,” or like something you’d see in a place like San Diego
I think the same about Parisian, even tho I love all the Modular buildings, Parisian Restaurant is still my number one favourite and I doubt something will ever beat that. About the palm tree, I don't see the problem. I like it (but yeah, it looks better in your version), it gives kinda Spanish vibes to it imo.
I don’t mind the tree at all actually it’s the first time that I know of at least they’ve had something like that for a modular. I think it goes well with the theme and pleasant feel of the luxurious hotel.
I'd love to customise this build to accommodate a tile layer in the suites, and add an additional two or three basic room floors and maybe an additional shmancy floor. I'd also like to strech the art gallery back into the ally space, and refine the rooftop bar with that new roof space
Overall I really like it! My main remarks would be: * No door to the back alley. Would have been trivial to add below the staircase in the lobby. It would also make that lower part of the alley wall a bit more interesting. * The fact that the staircase is not "usable" by minifigures: it's just too tight. I don't mind the palm tree really.
The tree in the original lime green is honestly what caught my attention the first time I saw this set, and I love it! As always a very thorough and enjoyable review, good work.
Lime Green…
As a graphic designer I have to disagree with the modified “palm tree” color. The color of the tree chosen by the set designer(s) helps to create a sense of depth, a color contrast across the set, and a building/landscape color contrast we might experience in the real world. Yep as a graphic designer and also former plant biology major I understand why lime was chosen! I still don't like it in person though LOL
@@JANGsLEGOreviews Haha! That is totally fair. I hope to get my hands on the set soon. I may feel the same way once I see it in person 🤪
@@JANGsLEGOreviews I would have to agree. I wish a darker color was used for the tree
6:23 Okay so not going nuts 🤣
omg, same. I kept hearing voices throughout and I'm like. WTH IS GOIN ON xD
The moment you removed the tree the whole build just clicked with me and the darker green leaves work much better. I'll definintely get this set. Maybe a downpipe could work in the weird gap formed by the angle.
Yes, a down spout pipe would totally work there. Great idea!

It's makes it look better it goes from Paris to New Orleans just by adding the tree

I bought it as a gift for myself for the end of my exams. I can’t wait to build it on saturday!
I like the brighter tree personally. I feel that it "pops" which I don't think is a bad thing.
I like the lime green colour. Other greens, such as bright green, would perhaps not have quite enough contrast in relation to the roof colour. Especially when it comes to modulars and other big sets, I always regard Jang's views with respect because of how much thought he puts into them!
My favorite part was the Palm Tree🤣 But I love visiting Florida and looking at palm trees, so it’s just sentimental for me!🏝❤️
Great review, Jang! We always look forward to your yearly modular review!

This review really does justice to this impressive set Honestly. The detail and the thought that you put into it, Jang, really is awesome
Parisian restaurant is unmatched for me as well. I fell in love with it at first sight, no other modular building ever managed to do that.
The bookstore remains my one and only true love in this line. But the 50s diner came close

A lovely build with lots of little lessons folded into its instruction! I looove the gallery. Its so awesome
I really love the vibe the lime green palm tree brought.. whole set is a beauty
This is the building set I have my eye on. Next paycheck, probably.
Just gotta find the space for all the sets I’m buying.
I think this is my favorite modular of all time. The colors, the subject matter, the builds: I think it’s stellar.

Jang don't act like we didn't hear the lime green voice at 6:25 and 10:38 😂😂😂
I actually like the tree more with the lime color than the normal green. It is really an eye catcher and the colors pop but like that about the tree. Design wise there would probably have been a better way but I think the bright leaf color gives it a more LA like, near the beach feel.

The gallery painting being the Happy Meal Nick Bluetooth is a super deep cut

To me the lime green feels like the sun is shining on it, which adds to the Cuban vibe I get from this set.

I think all things considered, this is a welcome addition to the modular theme. Can't wait to add this to my collection! I might even buy 2 to combine them both. Great review.
By far my favorite modular now. The colors are just so good

My main remarks would be:
* No door to the back alley. Would have been trivial to add below the staircase in the lobby. It would also make that lower part of the alley wall a bit more interesting.
* The fact that the staircase is not "usable" by minifigures: it's just too tight.
I don't mind the palm tree really.
The printed tile in the art gallery looks like a Galidor reference of some kind
Incredible review! Thanks for your great work as always :)
