- Our big goat show of the season is here and we're ready for the chaos!
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

It’s so interesting how much the judges varied. Seems like they should follow more of a guideline
Yeah, one judges put you in second and the next puts you in eight. It's so strange
There is a standard but it's how the person interrupts it.
well from my experience (cows & pigs) there is usually a conformation that everyone strives for but when in the show ring the judge usually chooses off of personal preference.
That's the same thing that happens in a lot of animal shows, like dog shows and such. Most just judge off of a feeling or what looks pleasing to them, not necessarily a specific standard. That's why your overall presentation and what you're wearing matters, because it's an aesthetic thing.

Love seeing you and Chrystal together. My two favorite goat families. I am so new to all of this. I live on my kid's farm and help them with their goats. We just went through our second kidding season. It is so helpful to watch all of your videos--yours and Chrystal's. They both teach and encourage.
So everyone's goat babies are not the most beautiful in the world? 😁 I liked that term barn blind, I imagine it's so easy to factor in personality and seeing them daily, which the judges don't get to see. Maybe I’m biased, but your goats looked the absolute best to me!! I gotta say too, that it was so nice to see Ethan and Lydia just fooling around being brother and sister. They seem to have such a great relationship. But yeah, I don’t know anything about judging, lol, but I still say your goats looked amazing!

With having goats (300 at some points) in the family...one thing to remember is that your just getting started with shows and every show is so different. You did great! don't under sell yourself. This year I bought a mini fridge and rigged it up to use as a cold milk free choice lamb bar. We love this method of bottle feeding. The kids grow like dam raised and are friendly without being obnoxious. I know you have mentioned straight bottle fed kids are so pushy.

This show seems very similar to a dog show. When I was young, we showed Old English Sheepdogs. With them it was more who the handler was not really the dog. It was all politics. Although we did have a male and female American Canadian champion. The female was in the club register as top producing and so was her daughter. Congratulations to your son and daughter. Congratulations goats.

Our local goat show is the 10th of this month. I don’t show any goats but I help out. I’ve been judge secretary for the last 3 years. It is odd how they see different things in each goat. There are standards, and the judges I’ve worked with have been extremely experienced. It is very informative. Great job with your girls👏🏼👏🏼

I show both dairy cows and market hogs so I must say the places you get are definitely the judge’s opinions! At one show, I won 1st and at the next I got 11th. But congrats at all the placings you won at the show! It seemed like so much fun, and I sure had fun watching it. 😁
This is what I never liked about showing: I had the same experience more than once (rabbits and sheep) where the same animal could be first for one judge and last for another. As a young teenager in 4H the "unfairness" of it really bothered me.

I completely agree with you because I co-owned a miniature pincher with the breeder, which meant that I didn't have to pay for him, my sweet little Norton, but I had to pay and take him to shows. Well... I gotta tell ya that after that first show where the breeder went also, she would tell me what the judges "preferred" and most of them liked to pick the red colored dogs and not the black & tan dogs which Norton was the latter one. I was sooo disheartened by that ever first show, that when we got home, I had discussed with my husband, and we decided to bye him outright so we didn't have to go to another show.
It's awful that judges can get away with that!
Sorry for the long story, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. LOL

I showed goats,dairy cows and market hogs and I’ll say a lot of the judges it isn’t opinion each show is going to vary its self with the judges and how they scale things and then contribute it to the other judges as well. I used to get straight 1st places for most of my animals you just have to know how to show and kinda what the judges want to see and how to sell them in a way Ive been doing it since I was like 12 or something and I’ll say it just takes practice knowing the area knowing the other animals and yours. Again everyone is different so verdicts will be different.

One thing we did to get cattle show ready, because a cow freaking out in the show ring is just dangerous, is various exposure trainings. Tying ribbons and flags around pens, walking them around people with flags and balloons, walking by as many different sounds and situations as possible. We even took the cattle for walks into town, though being a school the best training was having as many kids as possible being around taking, clapping and doing etc. Do everything the first time somewhere familiar, then repeat in an unfamiliar place but controlled environment, and then graduate to a less controlled environment like walking in town.

My in-laws showed goats. The reason for white is to represent dairy (milking) and the cows have the same understanding.
