Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

@@negilaorjustella772livestock electric fencing is not that expensive. Nothing compared to the fancy, marketed shit that companies use to promote keeping coyotes out. Everybody's definition of expensive is different. If i thing costs $5.00 and you don't have $5.00, then it might as well e $5,000,000.00.
But i hafta wonder if they were maybe looking at electric net-fencing or something, because i ran three hot wires around a six acre pasture & put it on a solar-charging fence charger and it ran about $300 because of the cost of the charger.

Those rats can definitely get through those slats - they can squeeze through much smaller spaces than you think. Staple some mesh on the inside of the doors - that will let you keep the cabinet while stopping the rats from making it their home.

You can get solar powered motion detection flood lights and have them pointing at your back wall. If a coyote does jump over into the irrigation area, the floodlights will activate which will alert the dogs and spook the coyotes. Also get one goose for your flock they are pretty good at raising alarm and even kicking some ass.

    • @Lapaka_

@@bumblebeaganYeah, you have two, and they'll just be in their own little universe. Now I just bought 10 goslings and I'll add them to my flock of ducks and chickens. They'll integrate as a part of the community and they'll mind the whole area as they'll accept the others as being part of their flock because they are truly a social animal and there are enough of them not to start a drama between two birds. Sure they'll pair off and I'm hoping so that they'll make more that I will in turn socialize and sell as guard geese.

I believe rats can get into the cabinet with the louvers - having the door closed isn't enough. They can climb, and they can absolutely squeeze in between those slats. Perhaps on the inside of the doors you can put a metal screen; something they can't chew through but will still allow ventilation.

I saw a video recently about these people who basically encourage coyotes to hang out around their house and back deck, even giving them stuffed animals. I find that insane. They have at least one that naps on their deck during the day, and the whole pack comes around sometimes too. That would be a nightmare if you had pets, but it's dangerous for the people around there too.

Just a bit of knowledge for you Danelle, you commented about the cat not doing anything about that rats. Cats hunting rats is a common misconception cats are opportunistic hunter and prefer prey that doesnt fight back like mice and moles and voles. Rats VERY MUCH fight back so the most humane/ environmentally friendly way to get rid of rats is dogs terriers are the best at it!

Also if your fruit trees are over ripe, falling to the ground, that’s what the rats want and you HAVE to get all the fruits off your trees immediately. From a lot of experience, if you don’t they will make their way into the foundation of your home.

I think be thankful that the rats did not get inside the house and they were just in an outside cupboard - I woke in the night here in NZ and could hear mice in the ceiling - I am not the only one with the problem trying to find a supplier with any mouse bait or traps is difficult - they all said we have sold out

We have two standard donkeys and live in coyote country. Donkeys are great herd protectors and we have never had a predator problem with our 25 goat dairy herd. Deer have jumped our pasture fence just to hang out with the donkeys and to escape predator pressure. You need more land to keep donkeys but they are serious protection.

Someone else suggested the rats may also be living under the deck. Have to agree. The cabinet was their penthouse high rise.. and under the deck is where they go slumming...
I can see lots of cracks where rats can get in under the wooden part of the deck, adjacent to the patio surface.
I would inspect the entire perimeter where the wooden deck joins with any other surface, and seal it up with whatever makes sense. Or get used to always trapping rats or mice...
I live in the country. All creatures, especially small, want to move in..

Hi guys! Just wondering what happened to the cats you guys had? If you don’t wanna have kitties again I’d suggest the bucket full of water with a trap on top so they fall in works very well and you can try and feeding them to the chickens
