General Grabber ATX, Long term tire review

- I rolled the dice on a set of General Grabber ATX tires on my GX470 nearly 3 years ago and have since logged over 40,000 miles and put another set on my Land Rover Discovery 2 and have logged over 9,000 miles on them. This video is my experience with these tires on varied terrain in the Western United States and comparing them to my experience with the Cooper ATP and the infamous BFG KO2
Quick update: I just finished my tire rotation on the GX and the inside wear on the driver side was too great to continue using. So I only got 49k out of them. I was also running 32-33psi instead of 35 that I usually run. So there is that. I'm installing two new tires and will continue to use the other pair for another 10k (if possible). Price (7/14/22) was also $240 for SL tires and $260 for LT-Es, so they aren't as much of a bargain as they used to be.
Still a great tire, in my opinion.
Bought a set of 4 Grabber ATX's three years ago for my FJ Cruiser. The mechanic at my local mom-and-pop tire garage recommended them to me after I complained about my DuraTracs being too loud. He was running Grabbers on his jeep and said he loved them.
So glad I listened to him; these tires are great! Quiet (70 decibels cabin noise on tarmac compared to 73-74 decibels with the Duratracs), great grip on dirt and moderate mud, crazy snow traction.
Some folks mention them picking up and throwing stones, but I've found that *all* AT tires do this; I haven't noticed the ATX to be any better or worse than the DuraTracs or Wildpeaks, etc.
I have 49K miles on my current set of ATX and will be buying them again.
Yup, I'm still running the original 2 after 20k more miles since this video (I did replace the fronts with the poor shoulder wear). So I'll be running 2 on that.
The disco tires have moved to the Tacoma now are are doing awesome. I love these tires. They will probably replace the Coopers on my 3/4 ton when the coopers wear.
My experience so far is the same as yours. I love them.
Great review. I agree, the atx is one of the best all around a/t tire. Thanksgiving 2022 we got around 6 inches of snow just south of Albuquerque. We get our Christmas tree every year on thanksgiving. Once we hit forest roads there was about 5-8 inches of untouched snow. These tire’s performed flawlessly. No slipping. I did air down to 18 psi.
This was on a 265/70r17 standard load non LT. On a stock 1st gen sequoia.
I’ve got 70,000km on my general grabber ATX tires. I live in eastern Canada and have had them on my 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor since I bought it in early July of that year.
Rotated tires every oil change. It’s my daily driver to work, but I also haul 2 ATV’s on a 14 foot steel trailer, and take the truck back old woods roads for hunting and fishing. Winters here see more icy conditions than snow, however in deep snow the first two winters these tires were absolute beasts. I could go through anything.
This past winter they felt less reliable, and I will need to replace them by the end of this summer.
Durability- fantastic
Quiet ride- fantastic
Basic off road stuff- decent
Snow- amazing
Ice- not as “grippy” as I expected, and any time there was a threat of icy roads 4wd was always on. After reading that they’re one of the most durable, quiet, and capable in snow- I’ll be buying another set this winter that’ll last me another 3 years. 👍🏼
I love them still.
Great review thank you. Im actually going to run these on my 2" lifted 2016 Toyota Camry SE. I'm getting the 215/65r16 or the 215/70r16 General Grabber ATX. We recently got 10 inches of snow here in Kingman AZ and this new setup should help. Thanks again for the video/information. Subscribed!
They worked awesome on both our GX and Tacoma this winter with the record snowfall. I hope they work great for you!!
@@ForgottenWaypoints good to hear, thank you! I think they will and your video helped. Thank you again for your review.
Great review! What size tire is that on the TRD rim in the video?
265/70r17, no lift.
My GX has to pull similar duty to yours. I put on some 255/75/17 Firestone Destination X/T tires on. They are loud around town but are fine on the freeway. The big thing for me was weight. They are very light but are still LT and load range C. No issues with flats so far through trips to Black Dragon, Webster pass and Yankee Hill. I hear good things about the generals from others as well. I just wish they made them in more sizes like you mentioned.
I need to try me some Load Range Cs!
How are you liking the Destination XT’s?
Good info. I’m running KO2’s (33”) on my GX470 right now and they do howl on the highway. And they’ve only got 20k miles on them. I’ll have to check out the ATX.
I tried the ATX’s on my diesel pickup and Discount Tire messed up the balance on them so bad that they developed a harmonic growl at 40-60mph range that they could never get to go away and ended up replacing them with KO2’s over it. I’ve got about 55k on the KO2’s with about 7/32” remaining but they’ve definitely gotten louder. I really liked the ATX’s and don’t fault them for the issue I had…and they’re certainly cheaper…but I’m still a bit gun shy.
That stinks!! I have KO2s on my LX, I really like them too and will be doing a review on them shortly.
@@ForgottenWaypoints Yeah I was disappointed they didn’t work out for me but I’m not sure that it was the tires fault. The KO2’s have been very good to me but I’m not saying they’re the best either.
Ive heard a few people say they are tough to keep balanced and some say they make their vehicle sway on the highway ...have you have any of these issues?? I am very very interested in this tire but hesitant because of the few reviews that said about the swaying and the balancing issues ...your input would be appreciated
I've purchased 6 so far, no balance issues I'm aware of. I don't notice any sway on the highway, my GX feels like a sporty sedan and my disco.....well, she just drives and rattles along.
@@ForgottenWaypoints i am a ford senior master tech and i run these on my tacoma and i cant keep them balanced at all and they do sway when the wind blows. i love how good they are off and on road but hate the balance and vibration issues i have with them! maybe i got a bad set. its a love hate relationship with these tires. i constantly have played with different tire pressures. mine are 265 75 r16. these tires are awesome in the rain, no hydro plaining
Most likely hard to balance when bought at Walmart since they do not keep up to Maintanance on their equipment.. so hard to balance any large type of tire
What is your opinion on the same exact tire but size 205 75 15 ???
@@kaitlynwiley9340 , that’s a cool size, what vehicle is it for? Id definitely try them.
I have them in two sizes now (my Tacoma, 16” and the GX (17”). I don’t have a 15” rim except for my trailer (not an off road trailer)
2006 scion xb. Have a 2 inch lift on it now. The tires I have are to big and need smaller as they rub. Was gonna try and send a picture but don't know how.
@@kaitlynwiley9340 , I wonder if you can have your installer mount one up front and then rear and check for rub at full turn lock.
@@ForgottenWaypoints I'll be doing the work myself. Others who have done what i've done run that tire with no rub. How can I get a picture to you of my car?
How much work did you have to do on your LX to fit the 285/75r17's? Is yours 570 or 470? I have 28570r17's on my lx570 with minimal work to clear. My new Toyo AT3's have a little roar over 45mph so I'm looking at options since still under warranty period.
On the LX, I have an OME lift and diff drop. Then some minor work on the pinch weld and molding the plastic liner back with a heat gun.
@@ForgottenWaypoints appreciate that info. I also looked up to see you have a 470 so maybe a little different. You have some nice vehicles though!
@@TigerRagFishingTeam , yours is a 570? I'm jealous. Yeah, I have torsion bars.
I have a set of these on my 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Off Road. Have 10K miles on them so far. I run the stock size but in Load Range C (6 ply)
I agree with everything you said, they are quiet, smooth and perform exceedingly well all conditions, including deep (east coast) snow and our torrential downpours. I have one complaint: They pick up rocks something awful. Some of them expel at such force it sounds like your truck is getting shot. Sometimes I have to pry them out with a screwdriver. That is my one complaint about them, the rock retention.
I've run Michelin LTX AT2's, Cooper AT3's, KO 2's and these are superior in every way to all of those. If they fix the stone retention issue, this will be the best All Terrain tire on the market by far.
Yup, I noticed the "rock collecting" this weekend in Colorado!
What size do you have on your Disco 2?
265/75r16
