Does retrofit underfloor heating make sense? We are doing it the hard way!

  • We are retrofitting underfloor heating to our 1970's home the hard way. We have removed all of the original floors and are installing wet unerfloor heating under a 40mm screed to run with an air source heat pump. Follow our journey and learn what works or doesn't

That's some neat work Ian. Thanks for sharing. I will be revisiting your videos as I get more involved in the property business.

Thank you Jaffar. Sorry it's been a few weeks we last posted but so much has been going on. We will certainly have updates for you on what works and what does not work.

From someone who has UFH its the best thing I did its marvellous only problem we have had with it is me, it doesn't work like the old radiator system and can take a while to heat a room up + it needs setting lower than the old system
For me I have capped the bottom temperature of the house to 14 degrees run the whole system during the day at 16 degrees and the TV room on a night at 19 degrees.
The system seems to work better if it ticks over and doesn't go really cold

Thanks Greg, do you have a heat pump or other heat source? We are home most of the day so having it on all of the time is OK, also its the best way to run a heat pump. Our build is not finished yet and we have lots of insulation not yet installed and gaping holes around windows. It is costing a lot to run at the moment but at least it is making it comfortable to work. We won't really know how well it works until next winter. We are happy with our battery as at the moment we are charging the battery from 23:30 until 05:30 and it runs the house until around 11, our car is charging some of that time as we are still using a 13amp socket.

What is the thermal load at 25deg delta. With all your insulation, does the heat input warrant this approach?

Hi, Thanks for your question. I hold my hand up that this project changed over time and we had various people doing heat loss and other calculations. Our install is also a mixture of new build which is block and beam and 50 year old property with a suspended floor. We were given insulation approaches to meet current building regulations but have asked to exceed them where possible. We looked at the various options for retrofit but as the basic fabric of the old building needed work we felt that a consistent installation made practical sense. I am sure we may have made some mistakes but we have found it very hard to get someone to give an overall project management approach.

    Costs?

Hi, I will share some of the costs that I can fully quantify like the supply and installation. The costs of excavation and floor build are wrapped up into the overall build and some of it needed doing as part of the renovation anyway. It was certainly not low cost!

I've had a 90 square metre system fitted cost around £30,000 with pipe controller manifold OMnie TorFloor boiler (GAS) insulation, secondary insulation(Floorquilt) Large capacity water tank + Labour (Plumber and Joiner)
